Twenty-one soundbites extracted by Daesh propagandists from mediaeval Islamic texts to lure vulnerable Muslims to their extremist ideology are put back into context to help others avoid radicalisation.

The Provisions of the Mentally ill in Islamic Law and International Treaties

The Taqrib al-Wusul ila 'Ilm al-Usul of Ibn Juzayy al-Kalbi al-Gharnati (d. 741 AH/1340 CE) is a concise manual of Islamic legal theory (usul al-fiqh) composed with an explicit commitment to brevity, clarity, and sound organisation. The work comprises a preface and five chapters, each divided into ten sections, for a total of fifty sections. These treat, in sequence: rational knowledge, linguistic knowledge, legal rulings, the evidences on which those rulings rest, and the topics of independent legal reasoning (ijtihad), uncritical adherence to authority (taqlid), legal responsa (fatwa), and the reconciliation and preferential weighting of conflicting proofs. Ibn Juzayy explains that legal rulings are placed before their evidences because they are the ultimate object of the discipline, while the rational and linguistic preliminaries come first because no subsequent discussion is intelligible without them.
Ibn Juzayy drew primarily on al-Qarafi's Sharh Tanqih al-Fusul, from which he borrowed extensively and at times verbatim. He also made significant use of al-Ghazali's Mustasfa - particularly for the section on rational knowledge, where he follows the approach of the mutakallimun and logicians - and of al-Juwayni's Burhan, especially in his treatment of transmitted reports and analogical reasoning. Among works he is thought to have consulted are those of al-Baji, al-Baqillani, Ibn Hazm, and Fakhr al-Din al-Razi.

Several features distinguish the work. Ibn Juzayy consistently presents the Maliki position before noting Shafi'i and Hanafi views, then adjudicates between them on the basis of rational and textual evidence. He avoids repetition through frequent cross-references and formulates many definitions independently rather than reproducing those of earlier authorities. Extended polemical engagement is deliberately eschewed in keeping with his goal of simplification. Most distinctively, he closes the work with a chapter on the causes of disagreement among the mujtahids - a subject he considered essential for grounding confidence in the results of ijtihad, but one that earlier usulis had generally left to works of comparative jurisprudence.

The Chapter of the Chambers: A Guided Study of S¿rah al-¿ujur¿t
S¿rah al-¿ujur¿t is one of the most profound chapters of the Noble Qur'¿n, offering timeless guidance on faith, character, and the etiquette that governs a righteous society. Though brief in length, it lays the foundations for a believer's relationship with All¿h Almighty, His Beloved Messenger ¿, and the wider Muslim community.

In The Chapter of the Chambers, Mufti Sayyid ¿Abdul ¿amad al-Q¿dir¿ presents a clear and engaging verse-by-verse study of this remarkable s¿rah, drawing upon the insights of the classical scholars while making its lessons accessible to contemporary readers. From reverence for the Messenger ¿ and the importance of verifying information, to resolving disputes, guarding the tongue, avoiding suspicion and backbiting, and understanding the true measure of honor before All¿h, each passage highlights practical guidance for daily life.

Grounded in the rich heritage of traditional Sunni scholarship, this work draws from authoritative works of tafs¿r, prophetic narrations, and the explanations of the scholars of Ahl al-Sunnah, enabling readers to appreciate both the meanings of the verses and their enduring relevance.

Whether studied individually, in classrooms, or within study circles, The Chapter of the Chambers serves as both an introduction to S¿rah al-¿ujur¿t and a practical guide to cultivating reverence, sincerity, brotherhood, noble character, and piety.

Written in an accessible yet scholarly style, this volume is intended for students of knowledge, teachers, and general readers seeking a deeper understanding of one of the Qur'¿n's most transformative chapters.

The Chapter of Chambers

The Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik (Organising the means and revealing the methods for discovering the eminent scholars of the School of M¿lik) by Q¿¿¿ 'Iy¿d al-Yä¿ub¿ is a seminal biographical compendium of the scholars of the M¿lik¿ school. It begins with an extensive biography dealing with Im¿m M¿lik and records the chains of scholars from him, divided by region, listing over 1300 scholars in nine generations in eight volumes.
Shaykh Abdalqadir as-Sufi regarded the Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik as the essential record of the intellectual lineage of the scholars who transmitted the school of Madina, and it is the foundational reference in his seminal work, Root Islamic Education because of how it highlights the knowledge and behaviour exemplified in the lives of the early scholars. He says:'We can show you a line that goes from Madinah al-Munawwara at the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and give him peace, through to Imam Malik, and from Imam Malik continues for five hundred years-in the Middle East, to the gates of India and to the gates of Russia, right across North Africa, right into Europe. For five hundred years, you find that the leadership was in the hands of slaves who were fuqah¿' and before whom amirs bowed their heads. And I say that is Islamic history, and not this other thing that has been invented by the orientalists which we have fallen for - of dynasties and epochs marked by changes in the style of jugs and arches.' (p.16)
You could say that the Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik provides the foundation and blueprint for the understanding conveyed by Root Islamic Education. The work provides biographies of the scholars and their historical positions and how they dealt with the problems that arose in times of conflict because we see the interaction of scholars with the Abbasids, Aghlabids, Fatimids, Andalusian Umayyads, Mur¿bit¿n, and others. We see how they interacted with power, and the role and proper behaviour of the q¿¿¿. It also fleshes out the implementation of the d¿n, providing a practical guide to education and action. It shows Islam embodied in real people and the action which that produces in society. It is a corrective to an abstract or idealised approach to Islam. It also provides us with a rich tapestry of the history in which the scholars lived, particularly North Africa and Andalusia, and a sort of historical map of Maliki scholars. It is, as Shaykh Abdalqadir says in Root Islamic Education:
'We would take the Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik of Qadi Iyad because it gives this record and will let them see an example on which they must be based, and on which they have no choice but to be based. The Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik is a record of human achievement, Islamically, that, I tell you, when you study it, you will say, "I did not know such men existed on the face of the earth!" And the Tart¿b al-Mad¿rik is more electrifying than any of the books of the Tadhkirat al-Awliya' and so on, much more electrifying as a phenomenon of the human splendour of the people that this Islamic deen has produced. It is magnificent, in its raising up of the human being.' (p. 21)Volume 2 treats the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generations of M¿lik¿ scholars, including such as Asad ibn al-Fur¿t who began the process of asking Ibn al-Q¿sim, Ibn Wahb and other direct students of Imam M¿lik about his positions on many issues; Sän¿n the compiler of the Mudawwana based on Asad's work which he thoroughly revised; Abu-l-¿asan al-Ash'ar¿ the founder of the eponymous school of kal¿m; and Ab¿ Bakr ash-Shibl¿, the noted student of al-Junayd and, in his own right, shaykh of täawwuf.

Islamic Law of Divorce presents a concise and structured study of the juristic principles governing marriage dissolution in Islamic law. Written with particular attention to clarity and legal method, the work explains the foundations, procedures, consequences, and limitations associated with talaaq and related forms of marital dissolution.
The study begins with the principal sources of Islamic law-the Qur'an, Sunnah, ijma and qiyas-before examining the distinctive legal character of the Muslim marriage contract. The author emphasizes that divorce is regulated by prescribed conditions and procedures rather than being an unrestricted act, and discusses reconciliation, arbitration, periods of purity, iddah, revocable and irrevocable divorce, and the consequences of multiple pronouncements.
Further chapters address divorce by implication (kinayah), the right of re-taking, remedies available to a wife, conditions incorporated into a marriage contract, and tafwid ul talaaq, by which the husband may delegate authority to the wife under defined terms. The manuscript also compares juristic positions associated with the Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools where relevant.
A substantial concluding section considers judicial grounds for dissolution sought by the wife, including absence or disappearance of the husband, failure to maintain, failure to fulfil marital obligations, impotency, insanity, disease or defect, and cruelty. In doing so, the work illustrates the operation of juristic reasoning, necessity, and inter-madhhab legal consideration within Islamic family law.
Originally intended to set out the basic rules of Islamic divorce law in a clear and accessible manner, this edition incorporates additional articles written after the first edition of 1983.
Suitable for students of Islamic law, scholars of classical fiqh, legal researchers, Muslim family-law practitioners, seminaries, and academic libraries, this volume offers a compact study of divorce as a regulated legal institution within the classical juristic tradition.

Why Modern States Should Abolish the ¿ud¿d Punishments

The Law God Didn't Write

A thoughtful and timely response to the many questions surrounding the place of women in Islam, this book offers clarity without defensiveness, depth without complexity, and truth without polemics. Written by a respected academic, it draws from both authentic Islamic sources and the realities of contemporary society, making it especially relevant for students, educators, and readers interested in faith, gender, and justice.
The chapters explore a woman's spiritual standing, legal rights, role in the family and society, and contributions throughout history, dispelling myths and addressing misconceptions along the way. The tone is balanced and direct, avoiding over-idealization while refusing to accept distorted narratives.
This is not a book about comparison or critique of other cultures-it is an invitation to understand how Islam sees women as honored, responsible, and capable, not despite their identity as women, but because of it. For Muslim readers, it may serve as a gentle reminder; for others, it may offer a new lens through which to view a faith often misrepresented.
Dignity, agency, and purpose-these are the cornerstones of the portrait drawn here.

A Woman in Islam with her Rights and Dignity

Foundational Principles Regarding the Science of Hadith presents a systematic introduction to the terminology and methodological principles by which Muslim scholars transmitted, examined, classified, and evaluated Prophetic reports.
Shaykh Muhammad bin Alawi al-Maliki begins by distinguishing between Ilm al-Hadith Riwayah, the transmission of reports attributed to the Prophet ¿, his Companions, and the Tabiin, and Ilm al-Hadith Dirayah, the analytical discipline concerned with the condition of narrators, chains of transmission, and transmitted texts.
The volume introduces the principal categories employed within classical hadith scholarship, including Sahih, Hasan, Daif, Marfu, Musnad, Muttasil, Mawquf, Maqtu, Munqati, Mudal, Mursal, Muallaq, Musalsal, Gharib, Aziz, Mashhur, Mutawatir, Muanan, Mubham, Mudallas, Shadh, Munkar, Mudraj, Maqlub, Mudtarib, Muallal, Matruk, and Mawdu.
Particular attention is given to continuity of transmission, narrator uprightness and precision, irregularity, hidden defects, competing narrations, and the rulings attached to different categories of reports. The work also examines Sunnah, Hadith al-Qudsi, methods of transmission, fabrication and its identification, and the relationship between hadith classification and legal evidence.
A concluding chapter introduces major Imams of Hadith and their works, including Malik ibn Anas, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, al-Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, al-Nasai, and Ibn Majah. An appendix addresses the scholarly manners associated with transmitting and reciting Hadith.
Written as an introductory manual, the book is suitable for students of Hadith, Islamic law, classical Islamic studies, seminary curricula, university courses, researchers, and specialist libraries seeking a structured guide to the foundations of classical hadith methodology.
