This book integrates diversified disciplines, research approaches, and methodologies of area studies, regional economic development, and regional science. With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. The changes in the Chinese food system are considered to have also affected the agriculture and food industries in Asian countries where economic interdependence has been promoted in past decades. The author argues these issues based on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary methods and approaches and has successfully derived empirical and theoretical results that are rich in policy implications. Patterns of Economic Change by State and Area: Income, Employment, and Gross Domestic Product is a special edition of Business Statistics of the United States. It presents data on personal income, employment, and gross domestic product for the United States as a whole, and by region, state, and metropolitan statistical area (MSA). Data on personal income and employment extends back to 1960 for the states and regions and to 1970 for the MSAs. Patterns of Economic Change complements other Bernan Press titles such as the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book and County and City Extra. In contrast to their predominantly current and detailed cross-section data on states and metropolitan areas, this book contributes historical time-series measurements of key aggregates that show how the economies of regions, states, and metropolitan areas have responded over time to cyclical currents and long-term trends. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.
