This book explores the fascinating backstories and unexpected sequels of bigamous marriages from the 17th century to the present day. A woman remarries after hearing that her husband has drowned, only for him to turn up alive and well. Is she now a criminal? A conman advertises for a wife and then disappears with her lifesavings; he has already done the same to many other women. How was he brought to justice? These are just a few of the hundreds of bigamous remarriages put under the microscope in Double Lives. As a companion volume to Double Trouble: Bigamy and the Law in England and Wales, 1604-2024, this book goes behind the law reports to reconstruct the stories of those involved. Drawing on archival sources, pamphlets, newspapers, census data, parish registers, divorce petitions and family histories, it shows the different forms that bigamy might take - accidental, consensual, deceptive or exploitative - and how bigamists' stories in turn helped to shape the law. Double Lives shows how bigamy should not be dismissed as a comical or victimless crime. Every case had its own complex mix of desire and deception, and, all too often, heartbreak for someone.

The neglect of maritime governance by governments, institutions and the industry itself has been nothing short of remarkable. For a sector that is characterised by widespread corruption, inefficiency and excessive environmental pollution, injury and death, the inadequacies of the current structure of control, policy and administration, which have persisted throughout its development over many years whilst increasingly recognised, has resulted in little progress or improvement. This book provides a detailed yet concise and succinct interpretation of what constitutes maritime governance and its significance for the success, operation and influence of the sector.
The major drivers, their impact and how they inter-relate, are identified and the whole process is placed within the context of globalisation, a major factor within the shipping and ports industry. A framework for analysing maritime governance structures is put forward centred around jurisdiction, objectives, instruments and agencies. The issue of maritime governance is then examined from an international policy perspective and how this differs from domestic agendas. Conclusions are drawn on the future for maritime governance, how the current situation can be improved and the remaining problems considered. The book will be of great interest to scholars and students of maritime governance, as well as practitioners seeking a scholarly overview of the topic.
Michael Roe holds the Chair of Maritime and Logistics Governance at the University of Plymouth, UK. He previously worked with the Greater London Council and the Universities of Aston, Coventry, London Metropolitan and the University of London (City). The author of over 70 refereed journal papers and 16 books, he specialises in Eastern European maritime policy and the wider governance of maritime affairs.

The Framework of Maritime Governance

This book provides the first in-depth study of the crime of bigamy from the 17th century to the present day. Between 1604 and 2024, around 30,000 individuals were prosecuted for bigamy in England and Wales. A few were able to establish a defence to the charge, but most were convicted. How they were punished varied hugely across the centuries - from execution, branding, whipping, transportation, and imprisonment through to fines and community service. Double Trouble details the legal framework that underpinned such prosecutions. As a companion volume to Double Lives: Stories of Bigamy in England and Wales, 1604-2024, it sets the offence in the context of the changing laws on marriage and divorce, and examines the consequences of bigamy for those involved, including the remedies that were available to the often-deceived second spouse. Drawing on a wide array of sources from the 17th century to the present day, including formal law reports, legal treatises, newspapers, censuses, parish registers, divorce petitions and Parliamentary debates, this book shows how bigamy should be taken seriously as an offence that all too often involved deception, abandonment and heartbreak.

When central banks were forced to innovate and develop a multifaceted set of new weapons in response to the 2008 global financial crisis and 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the result was a substantial expansion in their authority and reach. In The Art of Monetary Policy, Kristin Forbes draws lessons for monetary policy of the last two decades from the principles of Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War, a Chinese philosopher and military strategist from the fifth century BC. Tzu proposed several key principles for success—tenets that apply to monetary policy and the battlefield today: (1) plan in advance for the next battle; (2) accept and adapt to the inevitability of powerful, external shocks outside your control; (3) establish a strong tactical position; (4) develop a variety of weapons that can be combined for different maneuvers and situations; (5) maintain flexibility so that you can quickly modify your strategy; and (6) consider the longer-term costs when evaluating the trade-offs of different approaches.
