Transforming Environmental Politics and Policy

Debating Planetary Politics offers a range of perspectives that together provide a comprehensive overview of the issues and ideas central to the emerging field of planetary politics, giving due attention to its history, while primarily and uniquely advancing the contemporary state of the debate.An eco-centric planetary politics first became a prospective new turn for the world politics of humanity when scientists around 1970 discovered that the Earth system, including its biospheric ecology, exists in a biogeochemical composition which enables and furthers the conditions for life on this planet, and that our species is causing an Earth system crisis that is jeopardizing planetary habitability. This book examines how to best navigate through this Earth system crisis and expands on what planetary politics is about by including multispecies and critical perspectives that were not prominent before. It is argued that the current global governance architecture is inadequate for ending the crisis. We will need a new planetary politics. But what do we have in mind when we talk about planetary politics? This complex inter- and transdisciplinary debate does not only require a sound grasp of the relevant Earth system science, but also of the cultural, social, economic, and political worldviews and practices that have brought about the present malaise, and of how old and new alternatives might enable constructive steps forward. The law codes in the Middle East North Africa (MENA) region are a well-crafted blend of civil and Islamic law in which civil law principles do not violate Islamic provisions. Yet, common law principles derived either from English common law or Islamic customary usages remain unidentified and thus ignored. Here, this complex scenario is rectified through a comparative analysis of the primary data (e.g. cases, statutes and arbitral award decisions), adding common law and uncodified Islamic custom to MENA law codes. The purpose of this comparative analysis is to allow common legal principles found in civil, common and Islamic law to be distilled in order to create a new, harmonised international commercial arbitration law code (HICALC) or uniform Arab arbitration law (UAAL) for adoption in the MENA region, where these principles already greatly influence the legal systems and can be readily assimilated into a harmonised or uniform code. The work demonstrates that this new code would lead to improved arbitral award enforcement in the MENA.

With its huge population, China has accomplished rapid economic growth since the 1990s, although the significant income gap among regions and individuals has become a serious problem for its society. China's accession to the WTO in 2001 has had various influences on the entire food system, from agriculture to consumers, through the food manufacturing and distribution industries. How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. This book reframes the question of how Africa industrializes, and is the first to address a key challenge facing African economies today: achieving structural transformation alongside decarbonization, i.e. industrializing and greening simultaneously, rather than sequentially as earlier developers did. 

Drawing on primary fieldwork across five national economies - Ethiopia, Mauritius, Morocco, Nigeria, and South Africa - and six strategic sectors, accounting for 40% of Africa's GDP and a third of its population, Arkebe Oqubay advances the concept of Green Productive Transformation, in which structural economic change and decarbonization are treated as mutually constitutive imperatives rather than competing objectives. The comparative evidence demonstrates that where government policy, industrial hubs, and firm capabilities are strategically aligned, productive transformation and green transformation reinforce each other; where they are not, industrial growth follows the path of least environmental resistance, producing carbon lock-in. 

Just transition and energy transition frameworks are designed primarily with industrialized economies in mind. This book challenges the utility of these frameworks for Africa, and instead advances a domestically-driven alternative, grounded in structural transformation theory, green industrial policy, and the political economy of late development. No single green pathway exists for Africa: the evidence presented here reveals conditional pathways shaped by national context, sectoral configuration, and policy choice. A green, productive Africa is not an inevitable outcome of global technological change, but it is genuinely within reach, and the first step is getting the analysis right.
