Irish Yearbook of International Law

The Irish Yearbook of International Law supports research into Ireland's practice in international affairs and foreign policy, filling a gap in existing legal scholarship. This new volume covers the years 2023, amid growing state actions reflecting raw political and military power across the American continents, in the Middle East and amid ongoing armed conflicts around the world, most notably in Ukraine and in Gaza. Reports also cover topics on human rights in Ireland, international law in Ireland more generally, and the law of the sea. This volume of the Yearbook includes three articles, addressing international commercial contracts, the use of prosecutorial discretion at the International Criminal Court, and digital open-source evidence in regional human rights courts. Finally, the Yearbook also includes four book reviews covering a wide breadth of international law subjects, such as European legal regulation of technology, the morality of the laws of war, the prohibition of the use of force in international law, and sustainability in international trade agreements.

Die Germanische Altertumskunde Online wird - wie bereits das in ihr aufgegangene Reallexikon - durch Ergänzungsbände begleitet. Diese Reihe umfasst Monographien ebenso wie Sammelbände zu spezifischen Themen aus Archäologie, Geschichte und Literaturwissenschaft. Damit wird der Inhalt der Datenbank um jene Aspekte erweitert, die einer ausführlichen Analyse bedürfen. Inzwischen sind bereits mehr als 100 Bände erschienen von Germanenproblemen in heutiger Sicht bis zur Germanischen Altertumskunde im Wandel.

In the 8th-9th centuries annals became the predominant genre of Frankish historiography, displaying a remarkable variety of texts. Yet for a long time scholarly appreciation of this variety has been limited, stuck in 19th-century fixations on 
 urtexts
 and doubts about the proficiency of annalists. But for some years now, annals have resurfaced as historiographical texts sui generis, much helped by the increasing availability of digitised manuscripts. This has facilitated the study of codicological contexts in which annals functioned - a feature flattened out in 19th-century editions - and was accompanied by renewed interest in the genre’s role within Carolingian literary culture. The articles in this volume discuss the genre’s characteristics, development and differentiation over time, including the agency available to authors, compilers and scribes alike. Test cases analyse regional interests, language, the (re)use of annalistic texts in chronicles and vice versa, and their use as tools of communication between intellectual networks. A recurring theme is the need for new editions, be it in print or digital. In all, the volume intends to provide a reference point for future research on the practice of early medieval history writing.

The Dala Law is known through only one remaining medieval manuscript, written c.1335 - 1353, and shows strong influence from older Swedish provincial law. It is one of the oldest known texts revealing details of life and conditions in medieval Dalar during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.Contradicting older assumptions that this might have been an older law of Västmanland, the Dala Law is well adapted to prevailing conditions in medieval Dalarna Dalar. In contrast to most provincial laws where the lawman had a central position, in the Dala Law it is the written word, the law-book, that is addressed and appealed to. Although the text is comparatively short, this English translation is an important tool for facilitating the internationalisation of Swedish research and making Nordic material more accessible for international scholars.
