This handbook on the "New" Space Economy (NSE) offers the first comprehensive analysis of the contemporary space economy. The "new" is characterized by commercialization, greater participation of the private sector, innovation, and increased engagement of national governments. Using multiple approaches, the volume conceptualizes the boundaries of an emerging field of inquiry, characterized by continuity and change and involving terrestrial and extraterrestrial activities. It covers the fundamental economic, institutional, and technological dynamics and assesses the socio-economic impact of the NSE. Largely a US and European phenomenon, the evolution of the NSE in other spacefaring nations such as China, India, Japan, and Russia is also examined. In The Oxford Handbook of the New Space Economy, chapters by both academics and practitioners systematically address the changing institutional arrangements, interactions between public and private actors, and the role of innovations and entrepreneurship. First published in 1983, French Planning in Theory and Practice (now with a new preface by the authors) provides the first detailed account since the late 1960's of the French system of economic planning, and its relevance for other market economies. It offers an original and non-technical rationale for planning in a market system and examines the decline in French planning, at a time when the new government was attempting to extend the traditional planning system.The initial theoretical part of the book is primarily addressed to economists. It reviews the literature on indicative planning and argues that it is severely deficient, above all in failing to take account of the implications of uncertainty on private decision-making. These problems have empirical relevance for the French experience, and lead to the proposal for a different form of planning, supplying co-ordination that would not be spontaneously forthcoming in the public or private sectors. The analysis goes beyond the scope of French planning and has policy relevance for all market economies.Although written with the main analytic issues in mind, the remainder of the book stands independently as a comprehensive study of planning in France. It traces the gradual loosening of the links between policy making and planning in France and tries to draw the lessons from this experience for the practice of planning. The authors conclude that the type of planning that had seemed so successful in the 1960's was simply no longer possible in the economic and political climate of the 1970's, yet no real attempt was made to define an alternative role for the plan. The political and administrative authorities were happy to see planning fade. The arrival of the Socialist government offered great scope for the revival of the process, but the authors caution against supposing that political will was the only vital ingredient. The book is based on extensive interviews with planners, analysts, and decision-makers as well as on published and unpublished written and statistical sources.

Hart Studies in Private Law

This book explores the relationship between the English law of unjust enrichment and legal obligations arising from other branches of the law. It examines the question, primarily, by considering how English courts resolve conflicts between restitution claims and countervailing legal entitlements. This is much needed given recent cases such as IEG v Zurich Insurance and Avonwick Holdings Ltd v Azitio Holdings Ltd clearly showing the differing positions taken by English courts on the question. By applying insights from the theory of unjust enrichment to Anglo-Australian case law, this study gives a welcome cogent explanation of a complex question.

The results serve to inform researchers and policy makers about the functioning of markets, justify the interpretation of dispersion and flows as equilibrium outcomes, and provide an understanding of cycles, adjustment, and potentials for public policy.

In Illiberal Law and Development, Susan H. Whiting advances institutional economic theory with original survey and fieldwork data, addressing two puzzles in Chinese political economy: how economic development has occurred despite insecure property rights and weak rule of law; and how the Chinese state has maintained political control amid unrest. Whiting answers these questions by focusing on the role of illiberal law in reassigning property rights and redirecting grievances. The book reveals that, in the context of technological change, a legal system that facilitates reassignment of land rights to higher-value uses plays an important and under-theorized role in promoting economic development. This system simultaneously represses conflict and asserts legitimacy.
