Eight Zany Tales to Inspire Your Creativity!

SILLY STORIES – And How to Write Them!

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

The Rights of Performers, Composers and Playwrights in France 1890-1950

Performance as Intellectual Property

This landmark collection provides new insights, concepts and techniques to understand and respond to tort claims based on illegal conduct. It is the first comparative study of this difficult field, which has remained contested despite numerous decisions of the highest courts in the common law world. The collection draws on scholars from common law and civilian jurisdictions spanning Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Sweden. Together they set out fact patterns, and justifications for tort liability to illustrate the coherence and unity that exists when courts address such claims. While common law legal systems have developed a specific defence of illegality for some of those fact patterns, civilian jurisdictions tend to see illegality operating, if at all, through the existing components of tort liability. The book explains how these different approaches have been reached, how they work, and what they reveal about reasoning in tort.

A workbook designed to guide the bereaved through grief using a clinically-informed, structured storytelling method, this book gives readers the ability to disclose their suffering and work toward healing and reconcile with their loss using narrative writing. Based upon her research and the 'expressive storytelling' method she created, Linita Eapen Mathew calls upon her own experiences losing her father along with carefully structured narrative exercises to teach readers how they can write, re-examine, revise, and re-write their grief story to work towards a point of clarity and release. Leaning into grief theory and trauma-informed and therapeutic writing research, Writing Through Grief allows readers to create a complete and consistent account of their experiences to help them process events that unfolded, release trauma, and relieve the intense reactions and responses to the loss of both the living and the deceased. With each chapter combining Eapen's personal narrative with expressive storytelling exercises alongside discussion of the research behind them for context, this book offers readers a creative, productive but emotionally sensitive approach to handling grief. Whether guided by a trained psychologist, a workshop instructor or writing in the comfort of a personal space, writers can disclose their suffering and work toward healing and reflection through creative writing.

Narrating Your Grief

European Administrative Governance

This book investigates the extent to which regions participate in and influence EU policymaking through the lens of Multi-Level Governance.Focusing on the 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy programme, it examines whether regions – traditionally central actors in EU governance – are progressively experiencing a diminishing role. By comparing the current programming cycle with previous ones, the book analyses the degree of regional participation in shaping the Cohesion Policy agenda setting. Adopting a comparative and empirically grounded approach, it explores two member states – Italy and France – and four regional case studies – Tuscany, Veneto, Brittany, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur. By assessing whether regional actors still effectively influence Cohesion Policy content, the book demonstrates that recent crises, including the financial crisis, rising Euroscepticism, and the COVID-19 pandemic, have accelerated centralisation trends within the EU. It also shows how instruments such as Next Generation EU and National Recovery and Resilience Plans have further strengthened national governments, often limiting meaningful regional involvement.Combining theoretical insights with policy relevance, this book will appeal to scholars of EU studies, public policy, and regional governance, as well as policymakers engaged in Cohesion Policy and the future of EU governance.Sara De Martino is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the DIRPOLIS Institute, Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies, Italy.

A fresh interpretation of the Enlightenment that reshapes our understanding of political economy and its intellectual foundations. The origins of political economy are often told as a story of increasing certainty, rationality, and scientific progress. But what if its earliest thinkers were instead preoccupied with uncertainty? In Doubtful Knowledge, Richard Adelman offers a striking new interpretation of eighteenth-century political economy by tracing its roots to the skeptical philosophy of the European Enlightenment.Moving between Scotland and France, Adelman reveals how figures including David Hume, Adam Smith, Denis Diderot, Jean Le Rond d'Alembert, François Quesnay, and the Physiocrats developed a shared understanding of the limits of human knowledge. Rather than presenting markets or societies as systems that could be fully understood or controlled, they emphasized the complexity of the social world, the fallibility of human judgment, and the need for intellectual humility. Through close readings of major philosophical and political-economic texts, Adelman demonstrates that skepticism was not peripheral to early political economy but fundamental to its emergence. Challenging long-held assumptions about the history of economics and Enlightenment thought, Doubtful Knowledge reframes debates about commerce, governance, progress, and human nature.By bringing together intellectual history, literary studies, philosophy, and the history of political economy, Adelman offers a compelling account of how eighteenth-century thinkers understood knowledge itself--and why their questions remain relevant to contemporary discussions about economics, politics, and the limits of expertise.

Shortlisted for the Financial Times and Schroders Business Book of the Year Award How 1,000 years of global history show why technological and economic progress is often followed by stagnation and even collapse In How Progress Ends, Carl Benedikt Frey challenges the conventional belief that economic and technological progress is inevitable. For most of human history, stagnation was the norm, and even today progress and prosperity in the world's largest, most advanced economies--the United States and China--have fallen short of expectations. To appreciate why we cannot depend on any AI-fueled great leap forward, Frey offers a remarkable and fascinating journey across the globe, spanning the past 1,000 years, to explain why some societies flourish and others fail in the wake of rapid technological change. By examining key historical moments--from the rise of the steam engine to the dawn of AI--Frey shows why technological shifts have shaped, and sometimes destabilized, entire civilizations. He explores why some leading technological powers of the past--such as Song China, the Dutch Republic, and Victorian Britain--ultimately lost their innovative edge, why some modern nations such as Japan had periods of rapid growth followed by stagnation, and why planned economies like the Soviet Union collapsed after brief surges of progress. Frey uncovers a recurring tension in history: while decentralization fosters the exploration of new technologies, bureaucracy is crucial for scaling them. When institutions fail to adapt to technological change, stagnation inevitably follows. Only by carefully balancing decentralization and bureaucracy can nations innovate and grow over the long term--findings that have worrying implications for the United States, Europe, China, and other economies today. Through a rich narrative that weaves together history, economics, and technology, How Progress Ends reveals that managing the future requires us to draw the right lessons from the past.
