This open access book offers a unique perspective on the return of cultural objects by considering the aftermath of the handover processes. While calls for the repatriation of heritage have been made since the start of the decolonisation process, it is only in recent years that the debate on returning cultural objects has gained widespread prominence. This has been followed by ongoing efforts from several countries to change the legislation, adopt principles, and invest in provenance research to turn repatriation into a more proactive mechanism. The book tells the story of cultural objects that were housed in European institutions and returned to countries in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. In addition to in-depth analysis of relevant laws and policies, each of the case studies integrates interviews with those who were directly involved in those return processes, as well as those who were impacted by them, including museum staff, government representatives and community members. The book presents previously unheard insights into past return processes, the manifold modalities that such processes have followed, and, at times, unexpected outcomes. An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

 In the spring of 2025, Heroines and Drifts author Kate Zambreno taught a weeklong nonfiction "craft" lecture at Columbia University, thinking through the crises of the adjunct loop in the United States and the question of labor and writing in publishing and the university. This project became more absurd, and more urgent, as the Trump administration quickly turned to authoritarianism and the university became complicit with the administration, creating a dystopian and paranoid atmosphere in which students were kidnapped from university housing and student protestors were expelled. How can we study together and create under such conditions? 
 
 The resulting essays are funny, angry, often in despair, and somehow also full of optimism as to the future of writing, even amidst the collapse of the institutions meant to support writers and students. This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit.
