To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This is the story of how the online adult industry has plummeted from its lofty heights of the late 1990s, when a savvy Web entrepreneur could charge premium prices to thousands of eager subscribers. It is also the story of how the law has completely failed to keep pace with the technological innovations that boosted and then savaged the online adult industry. It concludes by analysing the social impact of virtually unlimited pornography of every description, available to all ages at the click of a button. Useful reading for the general reader and for students and researchers involved with business strategy, the history of technology, cultural studies, sexuality, media studies and technology more generally.

Traditionally, the presence of pornography in American society has been mediated by two primary factors: legal restrictions and the relatively high cost of the product. The degree of legal restrictions on adult material has varied from era to era and community to community, but the porn premium has remained relatively constant. Given this, these should be heady days for adult business owners. Thanks to the Internet, distribution costs are virtually nil and even the most hardcore content is easily accessible in the smallest coastal hamlet and most rural farmhouse in America. Adult industry balance sheets should be bulging with profit. But in reality, far from it. The World Wide Web has completely eradicated both the legal restrictions and premium cost that used to govern adult industry economics. To paraphrase Sir Winston Churchill, never has so much pornography been available to so many people for so little. This open access book critically analyses a wide range of consumer law issues generated or exacerbated by the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things challenges many of the dichotomies which have shaped current laws: goods-services, hardware-software, tangible-intangible, online-offline. The book focuses on 4 specific challenges: things-as-service, liability, bricking of physical devices through software control, and the potential for enhanced personalisation, especially for digital assistants. The chapters analyse specific applications such as smart homes, connected cars, and consumer wearables with a view to providing innovative solutions to the new challenges posed by the Internet of Things, and to steer the development of the Internet of Things in a fairer direction. As well as offering an important analysis of the potential for smart consumer laws in the Internet of Things, the book also provides important insights into the growing divergence between Germany's and the UK's consumer laws since Brexit. This book analyzes the legal tensions that exist in the economy that purports to "reanimate" the dead using postmortem digital technologies. Technological reanimation has proven to be big business, with many notable commercial entities investing in this "afterlife economy". Postmortem technologies convincingly replicate the appearance, physiognomy, conversation styles, and thought patterns of a deceased individual by generating digital copies that act in their stead. In the entertainment industry, new works can be created with dead celebrities through a postmortem copy that is managed by their representatives. The result is an economy in which the dead are offered as a product or service to consumers, with some having their artistic legacies extended past death through an "afterlife career". Many stakeholders stand to benefit from such a lucrative afterlife economy, but the law is simply not prepared for the issues that will arise with this exploitation of the dead. Reanimation requires the exploitation of one's reputation, persona, artistic works, and personal data. However, the corresponding legal protections are either nonexistent, inapplicable, or inconsistent across borders - depending on which posthumous interest is analyzed. In response, and by studying the contours of the existing legal protections in the afterlife economy, this book proposes a system rooted in the "shared ownership" of one's postmortem copy and the responsible "stewardship" of legacies through fiduciary duties.Law and the Digital Reanimation of the Dead will be of considerable interest to scholars working in the areas of entertainment law, intellectual property, and law and technology, as well as others with professional interests in the area.
