Routledge Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Literature

This book explores zombies, vampires, and witches in contemporary popular culture from a feminist perspective, analyzing a range of novels, television series, and films. Though some popular texts (from Harry Potter to Twilight) still use historically inherited conventions, many millennial texts (like True Blood, Maleficent, and The Walking Dead) utilize feminist-friendly monster-figures to critique regressive patriarchal ideologies, champion female monstrosity and female agency, and/or envision alternative socio-cultural formations. This book contributes to discussions in feminism, popular culture, gender and sexuality studies, cultural studies, film studies, and contemporary literature.

This book explores three monstrous figures prominent in contemporary popular culture—zombies, vampires, and witches—from a feminist perspective, visiting a range of novels, television series, and films from the 1990s-2010s. Though some popular mainstream texts (from Harry Potter to Twilight) still participate in historically inherited conventions, feminist analysis reveals that many millennial texts utilize monster-figures to critique regressive patriarchal ideologies and/or champion female monstrosity and (human) female agency. Rather than using zombies, vampires, and witches to conserve the status quo, millennial monsters and human heroes, especially female ones, are often deployed to envision a more feminist, egalitarian future with less violence and more social justice. In a culture in which post-feminist voices contend that feminists have achieved their aims and are thus no longer needed, this book argues instead that there still is a dire need for critical, active feminism. Monsters, creatures both incredibly potent and popular, can serve as conduits through which to lay bare existing problems and reveal possible ways forward. Popular texts like True Blood, Frozen, Maleficent, World War Z, and The Walking Dead use powerful female monsters and heroes not only to resist those forces that wish to maintain the status quo, but also to envision alternative socio-cultural formations. This book will contribute to essential discussions in feminism, popular culture, gender and sexuality studies, cultural studies, film studies, and contemporary literature.

Jazz and the Digital Revolution: GNP Records captures a transformative time in music history, the period in which digital culture took hold in the production, distribution and consumption of jazz. At the forefront of this epoch was the jazz-fusion label, GRP Records. Founded in the 1990s, GRP was Billboard magazine's number one contemporary jazz label. It had organised its recording, marketing and distribution practices around a full-scale digital philosophy, embodying the notion of jazz as a lifestyle brand. This books makes a case study of GRP Records in order to explore the relationship between jazz and digital culture, how this confluence gave rise to the 'smooth jazz' format, and how the industry negotiated cultural and technological shifts.

Music Theory in Britain, 1500–1700: Critical Editions

The critical edition of John Playford's Introduction to the Skill of Musick (1672, Sixth edition) represents the contents of Playford's seminal pedagogical treatise in the middle of its development. Although Playford's Introduction was one of the most famous music texts of the period, a satisfactory modern edition of its contents has not yet been published. This is due, in part, to the fact that the interior contents of the Introduction changed markedly throughout its publication run from 1654 to 1730 (though post-1694 changes are minimal). This edition addresses this issue by presenting not only the transcription of the 1672 edition, but detailed contents of the entire publication run to better understand the shifting contents of the major sections of the work from its beginnings to the turn of the century. The contents include an introductory essay concerning the development of the series, divided according to the main sections of the text: The Grounds and Rules of Musick, Instructions and Lessons for the Bass Viol, and The Art of Descant. The body is a full transcription of the 1672 edition with images. Two appendices contain 1) critical notes on the text and a comparison of the major changes-section changes, major wording and style changes, repertoire lists, along with significant codicological amendments-between editions using 1672 as the model, and 2) a list of all of the music in the different editions of the Introduction, including information regarding in which editions the pieces may be found and a reference to modern editions on those works.
