Zahlreiche Werke aus namhaften Sammlungen und Privatbesitz illustrieren diesen konzentrierten Überblick und veranschaulichen, dass Paula Modersohn-Becker bereits zu ihrer Studienzeit ihren eigenen freien künstlerischen Weg ging. Focusing on social types during the July Monarchy, Pauline de Tholozany argues that the popularity of typologies in France participated in the construction of a national ideal conceived as a sum of individual parts. Tholozany shows that types such as the dandy, flâneur, and grisette abounded in plot-riven literary genres and in journalistic sketches, signaling a fear of obsoleteness that continually evolving printing technologies cast on social thought, thereby inaugurating a new way of thinking about society.

Focusing on social types during the July Monarchy, Pauline de Tholozany argues that they played a role in the construction of a national ideal in France during the period. As Tholozany shows, types such as the dandy, flÃ¢neur (including the child flÃ¢neur), and  grisette abounded, both in plot-driven literary genres and in journalistic sketches. At the same time, in classifying and describing these types, writers such as Jules Janin and Honoré de Balzac in collaboration with graphic artists insisted on the impossibility of establishing a stable social taxonomy. This paradoxical gesture, Tholozany claims, has larger consequences, since the social type’s resistance to a stable classification ultimately points to the difficulty of defining national identity as the sum of its typological parts. Reminding us that character, type, and stereotype are all words borrowed from printing technologies, Tholozany suggests that the types in what Walter Benjamin called panoramic literature signal a fear of obsoleteness that continually evolving printing technologies cast on social thought, a response that inaugurated a new way of thinking about society.

Expectations play a crucial role in shaping economic behavior. But how are expectations actually formed, and how has this changed over time? The financial crisis of 2007–08 cast doubt on traditional theories of expectation formation, particularly the rational expectations framework. In Contingent Expectations, Alexander Nützenadel and Jochen Streb examine the ways that past experiences influence the economic expectations and decision-making of households, investors, and policymakers through history, and offer an alternative perspective. Combining a comprehensive empirical analysis of expectation formation from the eighteenth century to the present day with an assessment of the relevant economic theory, Nützenadel and Streb present a new theoretical framework, contingent expectations, for understanding economic expectation. Nützenadel and Streb show how economic actors developed new forecasting methods in response to rising uncertainty brought on by the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of global trade, financial market integration, and environmental crises. Tracing the evolution of economic theories on expectations, they find that when growing market volatility made forecasting more complex, economic agents often adapted with remarkable flexibility to changing circumstances. Challenging prevailing concepts of expectations, including rational choice and adaptive expectations, Nützenadel and Streb emphasize the heterogeneity of economic agents’ cognitive practices—in particular, the need to consider variation in information costs and historical experience. When central banks were forced to innovate and develop a multifaceted set of new weapons in response to the 2008 global financial crisis and 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, the result was a substantial expansion in their authority and reach. In The Art of Monetary Policy, Kristin Forbes draws lessons for monetary policy of the last two decades from the principles of Sun Tzu, the author of The Art of War, a Chinese philosopher and military strategist from the fifth century BC. Tzu proposed several key principles for success—tenets that apply to monetary policy and the battlefield today: (1) plan in advance for the next battle; (2) accept and adapt to the inevitability of powerful, external shocks outside your control; (3) establish a strong tactical position; (4) develop a variety of weapons that can be combined for different maneuvers and situations; (5) maintain flexibility so that you can quickly modify your strategy; and (6) consider the longer-term costs when evaluating the trade-offs of different approaches.
