The Good News of God's Relentless Pursuit (Poetry and Essays)

The first major book about an artist of powerful significance to twentieth-century Black and American art The artist Allan Rohan Crite (1910–2007) was a community leader, mentor, and tireless recorder of the people and places of Boston, where he lived for the better part of a century. Before the age of forty, he had exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, sold work to the important collector Duncan Phillips, and earned the respect of fellow Black artists around the country. But Crite’s decision to stay in Boston and his commitment to depicting middle class Black life and religious subjects relegated him to the margins of art histories that put the Harlem Renaissance at the center. Allan Rohan Crite: Neighborhood Liturgy, the first major book dedicated to this important artist, is a richly illustrated and wide-ranging celebration of a figure whose vast body of work deserves a much broader audience. Crite trained at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and became a self-described “artist-reporter,” drawing and painting vivid scenes of everyday life in Roxbury, the South End, and other Boston neighborhoods, while grappling with the ways they were transformed in the second half of the century by “urban renewal,” gentrification, and changing demographics. Working in oil, watercolor, lithography, book illustration, and beyond, he incorporated spiritual themes in his work throughout his career, blurring the secular and the sacred. Featuring essays by leading scholars of African American art, Black intellectual history, and urban studies, as well as oral histories by contemporary artists and Crite’s friends, Allan Rohan Crite reveals the radical power of Crite’s art and its profound influence on generations of artists, activists, and community leaders. "One of the most important and original poets of the twentieth century, May Swenson (1913-1989) was born in Utah to Swedish immigrant parents. After graduating from Utah State University and working briefly as a reporter, she moved to New York City in the mid-1930s and began her life as a poet. She took various office jobs to support herself, including time with the Federal Writers' Project and, later, as a manuscript reader for New Directions in the 1950s. Swenson went on to publish seven collections of poetry (with several more collections published posthumously), and three poetry books for children. Swenson's work is often compared to the poetry of E. E. Cummings and Elizabeth Bishop, with whom Swenson corresponded for decades. Her many awards include the Shelley Memorial Award, the Bollingen Prize, and the Award in Literature from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. She was a Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets from 1980 to 1989. This book provides an account of Swenson's life that draws on her extensive diaries, which have never been made available to the public. The narrative concentrates on Swenson's life from 1935 to 1959, a period that encompasses her departure from Utah, her personal and professional struggles before her first breakthrough publications, and her early years of literary success. The poet expresses her anxieties and aspirations as she experiments with her sexuality, extricates herself from a sheltered Mormon upbringing, and begins a new life in New York at the height of the Depression. The author traces Swenson's struggles with poverty, anonymity, and predatory men; her romantic relationships, primarily with women; the people she met, books she read, and the work she produced, offering a unique portrait of the times, the place, and a poet who resisted labels throughout her life"--

In winter of 1912, Henri Matisse—forty-two, nearing mid-career, and yet to find lasting critical acceptance, public admiration, or financial security since exploding to the forefront of the avant-garde in 1905 with his iconoclastic Fauve paintings—was struggling.
