How can people peacefully cooperate with others to improve their lives? This important book answers this question by introducing readers to the Austrian school of economics. Why socially responsible investment promises to make investors richer and the world better—but fails at both. Wall Street thrives by telling investors that clever financial strategies can reverse the trade-off between corporate profits and social progress. But the link between greater corporate social responsibility and improved financial performance is an illusion. Profit vs. Progress dissects the massive $30 trillion “socially responsible” or “sustainable” finance industry—and finds the emperor has no clothes. At best, sustainable investing typically delivers average rates of financial and social returns. But it makes social and environmental crises harder to overcome, by using financial gimmickry to distract our attention from real solutions. Author Brad Swanson argues that corporations in competitive markets act without moral values, and ethical investment can’t prod them to take greater social responsibility. The only way to change the outcome of the game is to change the rules. The solutions will have to come from legislatures, not corporate boardrooms. Swanson calls for public policies to make businesses better serve all of society, not just their shareholders—without blunting their edge. His recommendations include breaking up the cartel of large asset managers, rebuilding the influence of organized labor, curbing the rapacious behavior of the private equity industry, and eliminating the conflict of interest that pits corporate directors against the greater good of the community. The author shows that in previous eras of social crisis caused by corporate excess, meaningful reforms emerged through the political process. Today as well, the path forward is clear—if we have the will to follow it.

This book investigates core legal-political cultural myths of the Australian nation by canvassing, challenging and recasting some of the well-understood debates around, and invocations of, 'the rule of law' in Australia. It foregrounds one of the most enduring and prominent manifestations of these debates: claims to state sovereignty and rule of law in a system that has an incoherent legal foundation in its intentional ignorance of, and arbitrary violence perpetrated against, First Nations, their people, their sovereignty and their law. It examines the claims and celebrations of colonial rule of law achievements; constitutional rule of law protections; and the rule of law as tool to delineate and circumscribe the role of judges in the State. It presents a survey of the constitutional and legal principles and institutions and explores the socio-political aspects of rule of law in the country and how rule of law is experienced. With a focus on the legacy of the treatment of First Nations people, the book looks at how the Australia's rule of law institutions and machinery continue to exclude and fail vulnerable, marginalised and publicly reviled groups. Der erste Teil stellt die allokationstheoretischen Grundlagen dar, die bei der Diskussion von Wirtschaftspolitik nützlich sind. Zunächst werden mögliche Zielsetzungen staatlicher Wirtschaftspolitik diskutiert. Anschließend wird hinterfragt, wo die Grenzen staatlichen Wirtschaftens gezogen werden sollten. Der zweite Teil beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, warum in einer Demokratie bestimmte wirtschaftspolitische Entscheidungen getroffen werden. Es werden grundlegende formale Modelle demokratischer Entscheidungsprozesse dargestellt. Ein besonderes Gewicht dieser politisch-ökonomischen Analyse liegt auf Theorien, die das Zustandekommen oder das Scheitern von Reformen untersuchen. This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.
