Notizen zu einer Reise im Herbst 2024

This book examines the rise of populism and its impact on public policy and governance in Europe. Interdisciplinary in approach and combining theoretical insights and empirical case studies, it considers what populists do when they govern, and how their actions reshape policy, institutions, and international relations. In order to do so, the book introduces three cross-cutting themes: the style and substance of populism, the populist challenge to democratic governance, and populist governance across borders. It considers how populist actors construct identity, communicate with the public, and translate rhetoric into policy agendas, as well as the ways in which populist actors challenge or undermine democratic institutions and liberal norms. Attention is also given to the policy tools, institutional strategies, and governance styles associated with democratic backsliding, and how populists operate across borders and build transnational networks. The book will appeal to all those interested in public policy, governance, populism, and European studies.Sean Kippin

The Great Social Divide examines one of the defining questions of our time: why have unprecedented economic growth and global prosperity coincided with rising inequality, political polarisation, and declining trust in democracy? Challenging the assumption that free markets and democratic governance naturally reinforce one another, this book explores how decades of neoliberal reforms have reshaped economies, societies, and political institutions. Combining rigorous research with accessible analysis, the chapters reveal the structural tensions between market-driven policies and democratic ideals, explaining how wealth concentration, social fragmentation, and political influence have become increasingly intertwined.Timely and thought-provoking, The Great Social Divide offers scholars, policymakers, students, and engaged readers a compelling framework for understanding the crises facing contemporary democracies—and asks whether democracy can be renewed, or whether a fundamentally new economic and political settlement is required for the twenty-first century.Ruth Pasquier is an economist, researcher, author, and Fellow of the EuroMed Academy of Business. She has over three decades of experience in research, teaching, and executive education, having taught economics and international business in Switzerland, Ireland, and Spain. Her research has been recognised by international organisations, including UNCTAD and the World Bank. She is the recipient of the Emerald Literati Award for Excellence and the EuroMed Academy of Business Best Contributor Award. Her research examines the relationship between democracy, inequality, and neoliberalism, with a particular focus on the institutional forces shaping contemporary societies.

Is shrimp becoming Ecuador's new oil – and at what cost? Valerie Lenikus uncovers the political-economic drivers and the socio-ecological implications of extractivism: how export-led aquaculture has razed mangroves, displaced coastal livelihoods, and sharpened struggles over land and natural resources. Based on the Latin American debate on extractivism, historical conditions and inequalities, and the controversial constitution of 2008, the complex power relations on different spatial levels are depicted, linking the central role of the state and its policies with concrete struggles of communities.

Sovereignty, Sacrifice, and Survival in Pakistan’s Necropolitical Order: Death’s Dominion examines how sovereignty, sacrifice, and survival are experienced by individuals living under Pakistan’s militant and counter-militant regimes. Drawing on unstructured, in-depth interviews with sectarian militants and interrupted martyrdom operatives, it transforms first-person testimony into a critical analysis of necropolitics: the power to determine who may live, who must remain vulnerable, and who may be exposed to death. The book shows how selective protection, institutional failure, militant violence, and exceptional security practices can produce “death-worlds” governed through insecurity, abandonment, and differential exposure to violence.Combining phenomenological inquiry with post-structural theory, the study reveals how state and non-state actors participate in overlapping moral and political economies of death, in which martyrdom, refusal, betrayal, and survival acquire political and sacred meanings. It advances the Pakistan-specific NEC Framework—National, Ethnosectarian, and Counterterror Necropolitics—to explain how competing forms of sovereignty intersect in shaping the national order. In dialogue with Michel Foucault, Giorgio Agamben, Achille Mbembe, and Judith Butler, the book also develops counter-necropolitics as a life-affirming project grounded in justice, accountability, rehabilitation, recognition, reparation, and counter-narratives.Munir Ahmad Zia Rao isDeputy Inspector General of Police, Punjab, Pakistan. He has a PhD in Terrorism Studies from the University of the Punjab.

This book offers the first comprehensive English-language exploration of juvenicide, a concept that examines the killing of young people as a form of structural violence rather than ordinary homicide. While the term has circulated widely in Latin American scholarship, this volume brings together leading voices to consolidate its theoretical foundations and demonstrate its relevance across diverse contexts. The book is organized into four sections that collectively map the field of juvenicide studies. The first section establishes the conceptual framework and situates juvenicide within contemporary crises affecting youth. The second examines intersectional dimensions, including age, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, to show how these factors shape vulnerability to lethal violence. The third section analyzes institutional structures—state power, neoliberal policies, education systems, and criminal apparatus—that enable and normalize juvenicide. The final section turns to resistance, documenting collective struggles that challenge the disposability of young lives in countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia.By framing juvenicide as a “total social fact,” the volume illuminates the political, structural, and symbolic forces that render certain youth populations expendable under neoliberal capitalism. Combining empirical research with conceptual innovation, this book provides critical insights for scholars of youth and violence, policymakers, and practitioners. It also serves as a valuable resource for courses on inequality, violence, and social justice in Latin America and beyond.

This book reframes housing as essential safety infrastructure, demonstrating how safety, stability and recovery are shaped by place, community and connection. Through its focus on rural experiences, it offers a compelling analysis of the conditions that enable women and children to live free from violence without sacrificing the people, places and identities that sustain them. We can learn much from rural contexts in how we think about housing, safety and belonging, in our collective efforts to eliminate violence against women.-Professor Sarah Wendt, University of MelbourneThis Pivot book examines the complex relationship between domestic and family violence, homelessness and rural life in Australia. Challenging conventional understandings of homelessness, the book argues that housing is not simply a response to violence but a form of safety infrastructure. Bringing together theory, policy analysis and practitioner evidence from a rural homelessness service, it explores how violence, housing scarcity, cultural safety, visibility, trust, and service systems shape women’s pathways to safety. The book introduces the concepts of spatial safety, constrained agency, and intersectional rurality to explain why women are often forced to choose between safety and belonging. Offering important insights for researchers, policymakers and practitioners, it presents a systems-based framework for creating safer rural communities.Dr Helena Menih
is Senior Lecturer in Crime, Justice and Legal Studies in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at La Trobe University, Australia. Her research focuses on domestic and family violence, gender-based violence, homelessness, family law, criminal justice, and the social and structural factors that shape vulnerability and exclusion. Drawing on both academic scholarship and professional practice, her work examines the intersections of violence, housing insecurity, justice systems, and social policy to inform policy, practice, and social justice outcomes. This book reflects her longstanding interest in the relationship between violence, housing, place, and women’s pathways to safety, recovery, and belonging in contemporary Australia.
