Rastko Petrovi¿ verließ Serbien im Ersten Weltkrieg und wurde in Paris Teil der Bohème um Pablo Picasso, Paul Éluard, André Breton. Er ent­wickelte seinen eigenen, provokanten Stil und galt in den 1920ern als einflussreichster Dichter Jugoslawiens und war last not least geprägt durch seine Homosexualität, die zu dieser Zeit noch kriminalisiert wurde. Er bereiste als Ethnologe Afrika und ging als Diplomat in die USA. Im neuen, sozialistischen Jugoslawien wird er ab den fünf­ziger Jahren, nach Titos Bruch mit Stalin, als Klassiker anerkannt. Robert Hodel gibt eine Einführung in Rastko Petrovi¿s unorthodoxes Leben und stellt repräsentative Werke in deutscher Übersetzung vor.

Rastko Petrovi¿ (geb. 1898 in Belgrad, gest. 1949 in Washington): War der neunte Sohn seines Vaters Dimitrij, eines Historikers, und seiner Mutter Mileva, einer Lehrerin. Rastko war der jüngere Bruder der bekannten Künstlerin Nadeshda Petrovi¿. Die Familie Petrovi¿ war in Belgrad sehr bekannt und angesehen. In seiner frühen Kindheit verlor er seine Mutter und wurde von seinen Schwestern aufgezogen. Von 1905 bis 1914 besuchte er die Grundschule und die unteren Klassen des Gymnasiums in Belgrad. Auf dem Höhepunkt des Balkankrieges 1912 brach er seine Ausbildung am Gymnasium ab. Im Ersten Weltkrieg ging er zunächst als Freiwilliger an die Front, durchquerte Albanien und zog nach Frankreich, wo er das Gymnasium in Nizza abschloss und als Stipendiat der französischen Regierung an der juristischen Fakultät in Paris studierte. In Paris traf er viele Dichter und Künstler und pflegte den Austausch mit ihnen. Er schrieb Gedichte, Erzählungen und Berichte über Kunstausstellungen. 1921 veröffentlichte er den einzigartigen komischen Roman über das Leben der alten Slawen mit dem Titel "Burlesque des Herrn Perun, des Gottes des Donners". Ende 1922 veröffentlichte er den Gedichtband "Offenbarung". Während all dieser Jahre arbeitete er in Belgrad aktiv mit zahlreichen Autoren wie Milan Dedinac, Marko Risti¿, Tin Ujevi¿ und anderen zusammen. Ihr Schaffen legte den Grundstein für den Surrealismus in Serbien. Später arbeitete er als Sachbearbeiter im Außenministerium und wurde Ende 1923 als Assistent eingestellt. Im Oktober 1926 wurde er zum Beamten in der Vertretung des Außenministeriums im Vatikan unter der Leitung von Milan Raki¿ ernannt. Raki¿ ermöglichte ihm Reisen durch Italien, Spanien, Frankreich und die Türkei und vor allem durch Afrika. So erschien 1930 sein großer Reisebericht mit dem Titel "Afrika". 1935 wurde er zum Vizekonsul sechsten Ranges im Generalkonsulat in Chicago ernannt. 1936 zog er nach Washington, um dort als Sekretär der Botschaft zu arbeiten. Er bereiste die USA, Kanada, Mexiko und Kuba. Während des Zweiten Weltkriegs blieb er in den USA, schrieb Gedichte für die Sammlung "Mitternächtliche Werke". Im Alter von 51 Jahren starb er am 15. August 1949 plötzlich an einer Krankheit in Washington. Er wurde auf dem Friedhof Shady Creek in Washington beigesetzt. 1986 wurden seine sterblichen Überreste nach Belgrad überführt.
