In the seventh installment of The Photography Workshop Series, Catherine Opie--well known for dynamic portraits and landscapes that speak to identity and community--offers insight into creating photographs that navigate the contemporary landscape, as well as the landscape of the body and constructed identity. Aperture Foundation works with the world's top photographers to distill their creative approaches to, teachings on, and insights into photography--offering the workshop experience in a book. Our goal is to inspire photographers of all levels who wish to improve their work, as well as readers interested in deepening their understanding of the art of photography. Through images and words, in this volume Catherine Opie shares her creative process and discusses a wide range of issues, from representing subcultures and marginalized communities, to making confrontational work that reimagines and subverts expectations.

“In the best modernist tradition, [Deschenes] pushes against the basic terms by which photography is conventionally defined: instantaneity, veracity, fixity, or reproducibility.” — curator and critic Matthew WitkovskyDeschenes uses durational photogram exposure to create unique, shifting surfaces that frequently function as sculptural or architectural, rather than photographic, objects. In her recent work, Deschenes exposes photographic paper to the night sky, develops it, and fixes the photogram with silver toner, creating misty silver surfaces brindled with slight changes in hue that are affected either by exposure to ambient light or the hand-application of the toner itself. Some of these photograms remain unframed and oxidize over time, further problematizing the role of the photograph as fixed image on surface. Instead, purged of representational content, the photograph, in Deschenes’s practice, functions as an object that records how it has been, and continues to be, acted upon.Deschenes’ work is held in the permanent collections of Centre Pompidou, Paris; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. A collaboration between Jess T. Dugan (photographer of To Survive On This Shore) and curator Charlotte Cotton, Love Pictures centers around conversations about themes informing Dugan’s practice, including gender and identity, family and politics, writing and language, relationships and community, the book as object, and the dynamics of the exhibition space. These initial dialogues then prompted subsequent conversations with others in Dugan’s and Cotton’s respective communities: friends, colleagues, mentors, and subjects of Dugan’s work—including Dawoud Bey, Kelli Connell, Dorothy Moss, and Catherine Opie, among others. Transcriptions of these intimate and in-depth exchanges are woven with the first comprehensive survey of Dugan’s work in book form. Dugan's work is in the permanent collections of over sixty museums, including the Denver Art Museum, Getty Research Institute, Harvard Art Museums, International Center of Photography, Leslie/Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, National Gallery of Art, and San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

Combining photomontage with portraiture and scenes of Hmong American communities, Her mixes the real with the artificial in search of a diasporic identityRooted in the experience of her Hmong community and shaped by family lore passed down by her elders, Pao Houa Her (born 1982) investigates the potential of photography to create nonlinear narratives exploring construction. She brings together formal and vernacular photographic languages manipulated into light boxes, wheat-pasted images and videos. Her's adoptive homes of Minnesota and California become stand-ins for Laos; plastic florals replace living tropics; ersatz and real meld together. The Imaginative Landscape traces Her's ever-deepening exploration into concepts of home and belonging. With essays and an artist interview, this catalog explores Her's work in genres of portraiture, landscape, still life and the vernacular, as she photographs herself and the people and places around her through the tinted lens of diasporic longing. This book was published in association with San José Museum of Art.

Pao Houa Her: The Imaginative Landscape

Kinship and Community: Highlights from the Texas African American Photography Archive celebrates the rich history of photography created by and for Black communities in Texas. From eighteenth-century ambrotype portraits by unidentified photographers to the work of self-employed photographers serving segregated towns and neighborhoods in the mid-twentieth century, a rich body of photography was created by and for Black communities in Texas. The Texas African American Photography Archive (TAAP), founded in 1995 by Alan Govenar and Kaleta Doolin, contains more than sixty thousand negatives and prints from this history. Kinship and Community distills the archive's remarkable photographs into a moving testament to the medium and its transformative power. Filled with joy and pride, the images in this volume portray exemplary individuals and groups while documenting the parades, church services, graduations, and sporting events that punctuated everyday life. These positive depictions of Black life, by countering the mainstream media's racist stereotypes, played a quiet but powerful role in the struggle for civil rights.	Today, community photography provides a model for collaborative image-making, its vitality stemming from this union of ethics and aesthetics. Many of the photographers featured in Kinship and Community learned their trade in the military or from other Black photographers. As the civil rights era progressed, their aptitude and artistry enabled them to develop an affirmative vision for African American communities in a deeply segregated state. Decades later, the time has come to celebrate the accomplishments of these talented photographers, who include A. B. Bell, Marion Butts, Rodney Evans, Elnora Frazier, Alonzo Jordan, Benny Joseph, and Eugene Roquemore.Copublished by Aperture and Documentary Arts.
