Rhodes And His Banker

Empire, Wealth And The Coming Of Union

Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a conservation approach designed to ensure that any development or land-use change results in a measurable increase in biodiversity compared to the baseline conditions prior to the project. This concept transcends the traditional mitigation of environmental impacts, emphasising the enhancement and restoration of ecosystems and biodiversity. Biodiversity Net Gain Law and Practice provides a comprehensive understanding of the legal frameworks and policies that govern the protection and enhancement of biodiversity. This book explores the intersection of environmental, planning, and development laws and highlight how these regulations work together to ensure sustainable development and conservation efforts. It looks at key legislation such as the Planning Act 2008, the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, and the National Planning Policy Framework. Through case studies, legal analysis, and policy discussions, this book illustrates the practical applications and challenges of implementing biodiversity laws, and compares their success in the UK, Europe, India, Australia, Japan and South Africa. This title is included in Bloomsbury Professional's Environmental Law online service.

Springer Texts in Business and Economics

After having considered the core activities of providing loans and accepting deposits in the first volume, the second volume of this textbook analyses banks in its wider economic context, that is in relationship with each other and other competitors and stakeholders. After studying the competition between banks and how this affects bank behaviour, this volume assesses how banks are managed internally; rather than taking the balance sheet of banks as given, it explores how an optimal balance sheet might look like, how employees are remunerated and how they are acting when representing the bank. The important topic of how bank failures can spread, systemic risk, is also considered, alongside an evaluation of the effectiveness of banking regulation. The final part considers the impact that banks have on the wider economy and how their decisions can affect macroeconomic outcomes.

Commercial Banking in Context

Theoretical Foundations of Commercial Banking - Vol.2

A provocative analysis of the deadly Cold War conflicts that devastated countries and communities far from Moscow and Washington

Transforming battlegrounds in Africa, Asia, and Latin America into veritable hellscapes, the surrogate wars of the Cold War era left behind a legacy of collective trauma and social conflict that have persisted into the present. In this ambitious work, Alfred W. McCoy uses a bottom-up, outside-in approach to offer an unexpected new perspective on the longest, most consequential conflict in modern history.

McCoy renders an intimate portrait of both embattled covert operatives and committed antiwar protesters, thus humanizing the history of the Cold War-a history that has too often been told in impersonal terms of economic growth, nuclear arsenals, or diplomatic ententes.

As today's great powers devote humanity's scarce resources toward ratcheting up a "new cold war" in the face of a worsening climate crisis, McCoy's history is an important reminder that otherwise- ordinary individuals once helped end a global conflict that threatened nuclear holocaust.

A Global History of Empire and Espionage

Cold War on Five Continents

In a moment of interlocking and compounding crises that many commentators have aptly termed the "polycrisis," a leading economist offers a clear-eyed account of the underlying trends fueling the global instability and market mayhem that have come to characterize contemporary capitalism.

Rampant inequality. Unchecked climate change. A global pandemic. And now, seething international divisions and the escalatory spiral of war and state violence. As the world moves toward the end of the 2020s, each of the pieces of this mosaic are becoming impossible to ignore, but how do they all fit together? And where is it all heading?

To answer these questions, Marxist economist Michael Roberts draws on his forty-plus years of experience working in various financial institutions in the City of London to provide an empirically grounded and wide-ranging appraisal of the global situation.

Roberts takes readers on a tour of the contemporary global economy, first by turning back to the Great Recession of 2008, and then offering a granular look at the economic priorities and contradictions of every region of the world.

What emerges from this accounting of the polycrisis is the inescapable fact that capitalism's rapacious drive toward profit over and against any geopolitical boundaries or ecological limits threatens both humanity and the planet.

Depression, Polycrisis, and the World Economy in the 2020s

Time Is Running Out

A unified framework for understanding monetary policy, including recent unprecedented interventions by central banks Over the past two decades, monetary policy has been deployed in unprecedented ways, as central banks attempted to mitigate the adverse consequences of the 2007-2008 financial crisis, the COVID-19 global lockdown, and recent inflationary surges. In Monetary Economics and Policy, Pierpaolo Benigno offers a new way to understand the potency and effectiveness of monetary policy, presenting a unified modeling framework to analyze policy challenges posed by both paper and digital currency systems. He investigates current theoretical and policy controversies, drawing connections with historical themes in monetary economics. Benigno examines how central banks control the value of their currency amid competition from cryptocurrencies and private money-like securities; discusses the desirability of inflation targeting for macroeconomic stabilization; and explores theoretical grounds for the unconventional monetary policies seen in the recent period of zero nominal interest rates, including forward guidance, quantitative and credit easing, and helicopter money. He accompanies his analysis with an innovative visual representation of the New Keynesian model and inflation-targeting policies. Benigno's novel framework also allows the study of monetary policy normalization through quantitative tightening toward what has become the "new normal." He discusses the optimal provision of liquidity and the different roles of the government and financial intermediaries. Finally, he recounts historical controversies regarding the inflation-unemployment trade-off to understand the 2020s inflationary surge and delves into the causes and dynamics of hyperinflations, tracing them to the subtle, ambiguous linkages between monetary and fiscal policy and weak balance-sheet conditions for the central bank.

Routledge Focus on Economics and Finance

AI, Blockchain, and the New Logic of Markets

The global market in money – housed in the offshore ‘shadow’ banking system – holds $217 trillion in financial assets and operates beyond the reach of any nation’s taxman. Asset managers, private equity firms, and pension and sovereign wealth funds scoop up the world’s savings for investment and manage them as they choose, unaccountable to politicians or the citizens who elect them. In this brilliant, accessible and incisive introduction to the murky world of globalized finance, Ann Pettifor links the activities of remote mobile financial markets to both the cost-of-living and climate crises. In an insane global casino, bankers are gambling with our future. When we foot the bill, no one but a few economists understands what has happened. The result is volatile, unpredictable and uncontrollable speculation in global commodities, pension, energy, and housing. Pettifor argues that societies and governments can take back control of the global financial system. We have done it before and can do it again. Indeed, it is imperative that we do so if we are to manage the twin threats of climate breakdown and biosphere collapse.

Anthem Series on Development in Africa and the Diaspora

Narrates the story of Cape Town's Africa Café and introduces the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Framework for Africa (SEFA), explaining how excluded entrepreneurs build and convert social, cultural, human, and political capital into financial capital across Africa and its diaspora.
In 1992, in a small house in Cape Town's Observatory neighborhood, Portia Mbau began serving dishes gathered from her travels across the continent. What began as a family venture grew, with her brother Hector's marketing and brand vision, into the Africa Café, a celebrated cultural enterprise at Heritage Square that seated the world at a communal table for nearly three decades before closing in the collapse of global travel in 2020. This book is the first full-length scholarly study of that enterprise: what one family built, what it meant, and what it teaches.
The book is built on primary interviews with Hector Mbau and sustained fieldwork in Cape Town, including the township of Langa. From this single richly documented case, it develops an original theoretical contribution, the Sustainable Entrepreneurship Framework for Africa (SEFA). SEFA integrates the five forms of capital (social, human, cultural, financial, and political) with the constraints of post-colonial economies and the linked processes of value creation and value capture. Its central mechanism, capital conversion under constraint, explains how entrepreneurs excluded from formal finance build the forms of capital available to them and convert them, through the value they create, into the financial capital the system withheld. The framework is stated in testable propositions, with explicit boundary conditions. The argument then travels. Comparative chapters set the Africa Café alongside township enterprise, continental African entrepreneurship, and the historic Black business districts of the United States, from Greenwood in Tulsa to Parrish Street in Durham, Jackson Ward in Richmond, Sweet Auburn in Atlanta, and Farish Street in Jackson, districts that built every form of capital except the political capital that might have protected them. A full chapter grounds the framework in the philosophy of Ubuntu, engaging both its promise and its critics. The book speaks to scholars and students of entrepreneurship, management, African studies, and development; to policymakers concerned with enterprise and empowerment; and to general readers drawn to the story of what one family built, what it meant, and what it teaches.

AI and quantum computing are two disruptive forces about to push financial services and the banking industry over the edge, demanding an unprecedented transformation. They are not fleeting trends but fundamental disruptors that will reshape the core of banking and finance. Authored by a senior Swiss banking technology executive, this practical guide helps board members and senior leaders turn disruption into a disciplined strategic agenda. It offers a rare insider perspective and a roadmap for navigating these seismic shifts. Bridging the gap between technological innovation and practical application, this book equips leaders with the tools to address the challenges and opportunities posed by AI and quantum computing. It features a thorough review of the latest business opportunities and threats associated with these technologies, alongside foresight-based strategic decision frameworks to guide prioritisation. Real-world case studies and an online companion with 125 AI use cases tailored for banks provide actionable insights. It also introduces an original AI Adoption Maturity Model and a Hybrid Enterprise Reference Architecture to ensure safe integration of internal systems with external frontier models. Finally, it provides two detailed multi-year roadmaps, offering a clear path to harness AI's potential and to prepare for a post-quantum future through crypto agility.Rather than offering abstract predictions or generic solutions, this book presents financial-services leaders with the frameworks, choices, and implementation path they need to act with confidence at a moment when waiting is no longer an option.

Evolutions at the Bleeding Edge

How AI and Quantum Computing Will Make or Break the Bank

Capitalism is the most powerful, creative and destructive social system the world has ever seen. Vigorously celebrated and fiercely contested, it provides the backdrop for the pipelines and platforms that supply audiences with entertainment, information and connection. This book provides an accessible introduction to the key characteristics of capitalism and illustrates how they shape and distort our media and communications landscapes. Exploring concepts including accumulation, exploitation, ideology, oppression, commodification and colonization, the book discusses the impact of these processes on everything from our experiences online and the dynamics of algorithms to the power of oligarchs and the media's role in the escalating environmental crisis. At a time when technology is often heralded as either the cause or the solution to issues of polarization, disinformation and atomization, an understanding of the simultaneous resilience and fragility of capitalism is essential. Capitalism and the Media is important reading for students of media, communications, cultural studies and politics and provides a valuable resource for scholars and activists.
