Schon im US-Präsidentschaftswahlkampf 2016 wurde deutlich, dass rechte Politik mit Memes nicht nur schrill verpackt wird. Spätestens seit der zweiten Amtszeit des 'Shitposter-in-Chief' Donald Trump ist klar: Aggressiver Internethumor, Deep Fakes und KI-Bilder auf offiziellen Accounts werden als effektives Machtinstrument genutzt. Memes dienen der Feindbildproduktion, als Stimmungsbarometer für Themen und Narrative sowie als pseudo-harmloses Mittel zur Polarisierung demokratischer Diskurse.
Wolfgang Ullrich diagnostiziert eine neue illiberale Regierungsform: die Memokratie. In ihr herrscht, wer die Plattformen dominiert - oder gleich besitzt. Anhand zahlreicher Beispiele untersucht er Strategien autoritärer Bildpolitik in den USA, aber auch bei europäischen Identitären oder in China.
