Colombia

Gabriel Garcia Marquez was born in Aracataca, Colombia, in 1927. He studied at the National University of Colombia in Bogot¿ and later worked as a reporter for the Colombian newspaper El Espectador and as a foreign correspondent in Rome, Paris, Barcelona, Caracas and New York. He is the author of several novels and collections of stories, including Eyes of a Blue Dog (1947), Leaf Storm (1955), No One Writesto the Colonel (1958), In Evil Hour (1962), Big Mama's Funeral (1962), One Hundred Years of Solitude (1967), Innocent Erendira and Other Stories (1972), The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (1981), Love in the Time of Cholera (1985), The General in His Labyrinth (1989), Strange Pilgrims (1992), Of Love and Other Demons (1994) and Memories of My Melancholy Whores (2005). Many of his books arepublished by Penguin. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1982. Gabriel Garcia Marquez died in 2014.

One Hundred Years of Solitude

The Political Economy of Conflict and Violence against Women shows how political, economic, social and ideological processes intersect to shape conflict related gender-based violence against women. Through feminist interrogations of the politics of economies, struggles for political power and the gender order, this collection reveals how sexual orders and regimes are linked to spaces of production. Crucially it argues that these spaces are themselves firmly anchored in overlapping patriarchies which are sustained and reproduced during and after war through violence that is physical as well as structural. 

Through an analysis of legal regimes and structures of social arrangements, this book frames militarization as a political economic dynamic, developing a radical critique of liberal peace building and peace making that does not challenge patriarchy, or modes of production and accumulation.

In June 2023, four Indigenous children were found alive in the Colombian Amazon, forty days after the light aircraft they had been travelling in crashed into deep jungle, killing the three adults on board. For weeks the Colombian public had been transfixed by clues of the children's survival, of Indigenous tales of malign forest spirits, and of the unconventional tactics of the huge search team. But most now despaired of ever finding the children.
Thirteen-year-old Lesly Jacobombaire Mucutuy never gave up hope.
Forty Days in the Jungle tells the story of how the eldest child kept her siblings safe and fed during their time in the wilderness. It follows the battle-hardened soldiers and the brave Indigenous volunteers who undertook the search operation. And it delves into the Indigenous mythology - the spirits, shamans, and psychedelic potions - that was central to the drama and made it a rescue mission unlike any other. By investigating the children's motives for travel, the tragedy of their backstory, and the months that followed their rescue, it also shines a light on the painful history of Colombia's Amazonian peoples. Lesly and her siblings were survivors before they ever set foot on the plane.

In June 2023, four children — Lesly, Soleiny, Tien, and Crispin — were found alive in the Colombian Amazon, 40 days after the aircraft they were travelling in had crashed and killed the three adults on board (the pilot, the co-pilot, and the children’s mother). The eldest child, 13-year-old Lesly, took the decision to leave her dying mother, gather her siblings — aged 9, 5, and eleven months — and head into the jungle. She kept herself and her siblings alive for 40 days and nights, finally emerging when heavily armed soldiers closed in, yelling her name above the sound of barking dogs.
Forty Days the Jungle follows the compelling characters involved in the crash and what followed: Maria Fatima Valencia, the children’s grandmother, who had taught Lesly how to survive in the jungle; General Pedro Sánchez who led the rescue team; the shady figure of Manuel Ranoque, the father of the two youngest children; and even the Colombian president, Gustavo Petro.
But there is much more to this than an extraordinary survival story. Interwoven chapters address key questions about Colombian and Latin American history, society, and political economy — the answers to which shed light on the socio-political state of much of the world today. Colombia’s problems mirror, in many ways, the rising Global South in its 21st-century struggles against colonial histories and a globalised world.

Love in the Time of Cholera

La Constitución para la Confederación Granadina de 1858 representa un hito en la historia política de la región que hoy conocemos como Colombia. Redactada y promulgada por el Senado y la Cámara de Representantes de la Nueva Granada, esta Constitución surgió del Acto Legislativo del 10 de febrero de 1858, que reformó y añadió al Artículo 57 de la Constitución previa. El documento establecía la estructura política de la Confederación Granadina, una entidad federal compuesta por los Estados de Antioquia, Bolívar, Boyacá, Cauca, Cundinamarca, Magdalena, Panamá y Santander.
Promulgada bajo la protección de "Dios Omnipotente, Autor y Supremo Legislador del Universo", la Constitución del 22 de mayo de 1858 delineó las bases para una nación soberana, libre e independiente, confederada a perpetuidad bajo el nombre de "Confederación Granadina". Este documento legal fue crucial en definir los límites territoriales de la Confederación, que correspondían a los del Virreinato de Nueva Granada en 1810, y estableció las relaciones fronterizas con Venezuela, Guatemala, Brasil y Ecuador.
La Constitución también definió la ciudadanía en la Confederación Granadina, estableciendo que eran granadinos todos los nacidos en el territorio confederado, los hijos de granadinos nacidos en el extranjero, los naturalizados y aquellos que, aunque no cumplieran con estos criterios, tuvieran las cualidades de granadinos según la Constitución de 1853. Además, se precisó quiénes eran considerados granadinos de nacimiento, incluyendo a los colombianos que habían prestado servicios al gobierno nacional.
Otro aspecto importante de la Constitución era la definición de los derechos y responsabilidades de los ciudadanos. Se estableció que los ciudadanos aptos para votar o ser elegidos para cargos públicos eran los varones granadinos mayores de 21 años, así como los menores de esa edad si estaban o habían estado casados. La ciudadanía podía suspenderse solo en caso de condena criminal o por enajenación mental.
Esta Constitución, aunque reemplazada posteriormente por la Constitución política de los Estados Unidos de Colombia de 1863, fue un paso significativo hacia la consolidación del federalismo en la región y marcó un periodo importante en la evolución constitucional y política de Colombia. Su promulgación fue un reflejo de los cambios sociales y políticos que se estaban produciendo en el país y en la región durante el siglo XIX.

El Acuerdo de Paz suscrito por el gobierno colombiano y las FARC en diciembre de 2016 materializa los esfuerzos locales y transnacionales porque el "género cuente" en la transición. Este libro enriquece el panorama académico reconstruyendo y reflexionando sobre lo que el género ha significado para la construcción de la transición, y sobre lo que la transición ha significado para la construcción del feminismo colombiano. Así, el libro hace tres aportes al debate sobre el género en la transición. En primer lugar, el libro proporciona datos recientes de lo que "les ha pasado de verdad" a las mujeres en los procesos de investigación, reparación y judicialización de los crímenes de los que fueron víctimas. En segundo lugar, el libro aporta herramientas teóricas para pensar los desencuentros entre el discurso de la transición, o la transición deseada, y la realidad de la transición para las mujeres. Finalmente, el libro recupera la voz de las mujeres en estos procesos, tanto en cuanto constructoras de las negociaciones, como en cuanto contradictoras, narradoras y productoras. Una cosa es el fracaso de esquemas que finalmente no podemos reivindicar completamente como propios pues siempre representan compromisos entre distintos puntos de vista. Otra cosa distinta es que no estemos intentando transformar las realidades en las que vivimos. Este mismo libro es testimonio de las voces de las mujeres en la academia colombiana. Los equipos de violentólogos colombianos han tenido pocas mujeres en sus filas hasta ahora.
