Resolving Intergenerational Conflicts

An Approach from Philosophy, Economics, and Experiments

Introduction.- Duty and Reciprocity in Intergenerational Ethics.- Developing Intergenerational Cooperation Based on Public Reciprocity - Intergenerational Cooperation through the Kantian Categorical Imperative.- Considerations for Policy Decisions Involving Multiple Generations - An Examination through an Economic Experiment on Fiscal Policy.- The Meaning of Equal Treatment of Present and Future Events - Time Discounting.- Conclusion.

A collection of eye-opening natural experiments, showing how economists uncover cause-and-effect relationships and reveal insights about our world. Does having a daughter change how a congressperson votes? How did a nineteenth-century doctor help discover germs? Is it better to go first or second in a penalty shootout? Why don’t diplomats pay their parking tickets? Do leaders really matter? These are all questions economists ask. Some of these questions are serious, others less consequential. But all are interesting—and can be answered by way of the natural experiment. A natural experiment is an event in the real world that neatly divides people into a treatment group and a control group—and it is one of the greatest tools in the economist’s toolkit. In Daughters, Diplomats, and Death, Patrick Gourley discusses why and how economists have leveraged this powerful method to answer questions that were long thought unanswerable. In the vein of Freakonomics, Nudge, and The Tipping Point, the book takes the reader on a lively and engaging tour of some of the most fascinating natural experiments, explaining how they work, how they help social scientists answer questions, and what conclusions they reached. The experiments illuminate a wide range of timely issues in health, education, reproductive issues, and the environment, lending rich and much-needed nuance to the complex debates that shape today’s headlines.

How Economists Use Natural Experiments to Decipher Our World

Daughters, Diplomats, and Death

This book examines sustainability from an ethnoeconomics perspective, offering an equitable and durable pathway for economic development in the climate–biodiversity era. By recognising the rationalities, ecological knowledge, and institutional practices embedded within indigenous and local communities, it presents economic models built around sustainable practice, land stewardship, biodiversity, reciprocity, and social resilience rather than growth and extraction alone. In contrast to conventional approaches to development economics, ethnoeconomics defines economic activity as a culturally mediated relationship between human communities and their environments. The book highlights the importance of culturally diverse knowledge traditions for global institutions, ecological renewal, and the future of the world economy. It will be of interest to students, researchers, and policymakers concerned with environmental economics, development studies, sustainability transitions, economic anthropology, biodiversity governance, and the role of indigenous and local knowledge in shaping more resilient and equitable forms of development.Vladan L. Kuzmanović
is a researcher in economics at the University of Belgrade, Faculty of Economics, Serbia. His work focuses on sustainable development, environmental economics, economic anthropology, marketing theory, behavioural economics, and the role of local and indigenous knowledge systems in socio-economic and ecological transformation.

This book pays homage to a rock band that has most influenced alternative culture, the Grateful Dead. It critically discussing the evolution of the libertarian spirit in the USA, which was born and developed in the 1960s and merged in the last three decades into a libertarian ideology, based on individual freedom, antistatalism and the primacy of the spirit of the self-made man. Examining how this transition was functional, on the one hand, to high-tech digital innovation and, on the other, to the spirit of new platform capitalism. Andrea Fumagalli suggests that the process of capturing the libertarian spirit for capitalist purposes, which represents one of the clearest examples of "life subsumption", the acknowledgment that the life of individuals at the very moment that it triggers processes of social cooperation is a potential source of subversive behaviour, and how this can turn into a powerful tool for today's capitalist valorisation.

Using the metaphor of the Grateful Dead's music and community spirit, this book analyses the processes of political transformation in the USA from Fordist capitalism to today's platform capitalism.

A guidebook to the institutional transformation of design theory and practice by restoring the long-excluded cultures of Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities. From the excesses of world expositions to myths of better living through technology, modernist design, in its European-based guises, has excluded and oppressed the very people whose lands and lives it reshaped. Decolonizing Design first asks how modernist design has encompassed and advanced the harmful project of colonization—then shows how design might address these harms by recentering its theory and practice in global Indigenous cultures and histories. A leading figure in the movement to decolonize design, Dori Tunstall uses hard-hitting real-life examples and case studies drawn from over fifteen years of working to transform institutions to better reflect the lived experiences of Indigenous, Black, and People of Color communities. Her book is at once enlightening, inspiring, and practical, interweaving her lived experiences with extensive research to show what decolonizing design means, how it heals, and how to practice it in our institutions today. For leaders and practitioners in design institutions and communities, Tunstall’s work demonstrates how we can transform the way we imagine and remake the world, replacing pain and repression with equity, inclusion, and diversity—in short, she shows us how to realize the infinite possibilities that decolonized design represents.

This edited book addresses the paradox of sustainability amidst the complexities of economics, enterprises, environment, and society. It delves into the economic, social, and environmental dimensions, examining not only the interconnections and alignments, but also the conflicts across various levels of sustainable development. With the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a backdrop, the book addresses the trending topic of sustainability among economists, scholars, practitioners, environmentalists, policymakers, and the general public. Despite the SDGs’ projected realization by the 2090s, significant "why not" challenges remain. Current research, policies, and practices are often fragmented, relying on specialized or professional works. The contents of this book transcend geographical, sectorial, and professional boundaries to examine the intersections and paradoxes among the three dimensions of sustainability, provoking further debates and generating societal impacts. The book is divided into four parts: the first three present original research from various disciplines addressing specific concerns of each sustainability dimension. The fourth part includes perspectives of practitioners such as founders of social enterprises and non-profits, alongside editorial analysis of the complexities and paradoxes of sustainability for theoretical, practical, and policy recommendations.Adopting a holistic approach, this book offers actionable insights and strategies to address sustainability challenges, fostering ecosystem resilience and long-term global development.

Why unregulated free-market capitalism endangers democracy—and what to do about it. In Private Power and Democracy’s Decline, Mordecai Kurz explores the relationship between free-market capitalism and democracy. He shows that technology has made capitalism different from what was envisioned in the Age of Enlightenment. Technology creates centers of market power and monopoly concentration that result in a society in which some people are enriched immensely while many workers’ livelihoods are often destroyed. Contrary to conventional thinking, technological competition does not remove market power, which becomes a permanent fixture of free-market capitalism. Such private power creates political inequality and generates forces that cause democracy’s decline and possible destruction. Applying these ideas to the US, Kurz shows that today’s problems begin in the 1980s with the policy of unregulated free-market capitalism. Coupled with the information technology revolution, this created a techno-winner-takes-all economy—leading to a second Gilded Age of unsustainable inequality and extreme political polarization. In the last 50 years, the economy “boomed” for some while leaving the majority of America’s workers behind. Kurz concludes that only regulated capitalism can support democracy so that the benefits of technology are more equally shared and no person’s livelihood is destroyed to enable others to be enriched. To save democracy, he proposes a “restoration-of-livelihood” policy, offering firms managerial flexibility to maintain rising productivity while ensuring that technology does not destroy the livelihood of others.

*A Next Big Ideas Club Must Read Book for May* *A Notable Book in BookRiot, LGBTQReads, The Daily Kos* For fans of Susan Cain and Jenny Odell, an indispensable, paradigm-shifting exploration of flamboyance—tracing its history and social significance through the lives of those who embody it and offering a roadmap for anyone looking to harness the power of their own inner flame Flamboyance ignites every aspect of our lives, from art and entertainment to ritual and protest. The word connotes an exuberance of thought and expression, and often, unbridled, unashamed passion. Yet historically the term “flamboyant” has been reserved for the over-the-top and the outré, invoked at times as a pejorative innuendo or worse. Celebrated author and scholar Jack Parlett digs into the nature of flamboyance to offer a new, empowering reframing of a quality that any of us can and should harness more regularly. From Judy Garland to Lil Nas X, Parlett highlights the stories of flamboyant figures throughout history to show how, by harnessing our own inner flame, we break free from cultural expectations that don’t serve us and live a brighter, happier, more audaciously fulfilling life.

The fundamental litmus test for American democracy-its economy, government, criminal justice system, education, mass media, and culture-remains: how broad and intense are the arbitrary powers used and deployed against black people. In this sense, the problem of the twenty-first century remains the problem of the color line. --from the new Preface First published in 1993 on the one-year anniversary of the L.A. riots, Race Matters was a national best-seller, and it has since become a groundbreaking classic on race in America. Race Matters contains West's most powerful essays on the issues relevant to black Americans today: despair, black conservatism, black-Jewish relations, myths about black sexuality, the crisis in leadership in the black community, and the legacy of Malcolm X. And the insights that he brings to these complicated problems remain fresh, exciting, creative, and compassionate. Now more than ever, Race Matters is a book for all Americans, as it helps us to build a genuine multiracial democracy in the new millennium.

A giant of the political left, Rosa Luxemburg is one of the foremost minds in the canon of revolutionary socialist thought. But she was much more than just a thinker. She made herself heard in a world inimical to the voices of strong-willed women. She overcame physical infirmity and the prejudice she faced as a Jew to become an active revolutionary whose philosophy enriched every corner of an incredibly productive and creative life—her many friendships, her sexual intimacies, and her love of science, nature and art. Always opposed to the First World War, when others on the German left were swept up on a tide of nationalism, she was imprisoned and murdered in 1919 fighting for a revolution she knew to be doomed. In this beautifully drawn work of graphic biography, writer and artist Kate Evans has opened up her subject’s intellectual world to a new audience, grounding Luxemburg’s ideas in the realities of an inspirational and deeply affecting life.

A USA TODAY BESTSELLER! What do conservatives actually believe? In this powerful and inspiring manifesto, New York Times bestselling author and former Vice President Mike Pence pens a 21st-century version of The Conscience of a Conservative. With candid insights after decades as a happy warrior in the movement, Pence convincingly explains why the Republican Party must choose enduring conservative principles over the temptations of big-government populism. Conservatives know that wisdom often begins by consulting the people who came before us. As Barry Goldwater wrote, conservative principles persist because they are rooted in the truth. But this isn't just a book about the past. It's about how time-tested conservative principles can be applied to the problems of tomorrow. Pence explains why conservatives believe our rights come from God and then articulates conservative positions on the right to life, limited government, law and order, economic freedom, the national debt, federalism, patriotic education, the traditional family, peace through strength, and standing with Israel, among many other issues-as well as the virtues of character, civility, and statesmanship in our politics. Few politicians have the strength of character of former Congressman, Governor, and Vice President Pence. Pence is the standard bearer for true conservative values at a time when many readers and voters no longer understand what it means to be a conservative, or why conservative values are so important. In What Conservatives Believe, Pence writes about the importance of conservatism with authority, respect, and candor. As he's fond of saying, "I'm a conservative but I'm not in a bad mood about it." A true statesman and leader, Pence defines conservatism for a new generation in what promises to become a timeless conservative classic.
