New Approaches to Byzantine History and Culture

This book examines the relationship between the emergence of Byzantine archaeology and British colonialism during the period of the British Mandate in Palestine. Taking a single case study, the Negev Desert (now in southern Israel), this study explores how the development of Byzantine archaeology and historical enquiry in the region after 1800 provided the British government with a political and economic blueprint to secure its strategic interests over the Suez Canal. Several excavations of Byzantine sites during the British Mandate were utilised as an historic proof of concept for scientific programmes of ‘desert greening’, and to advocate for the displacement of Arab populations in favour of British economic development and town planning. Invariably, such contemporary concerns to secure British access to the Suez after 1869 shaped the interpretation of Byzantine history. Ideas of the Negev as a timeless ‘frontier zone’, which benefitted from the imposition of a central imperial government and increased economic immigration from a ‘Hellenised’ western Europe, gained a historical precedent in an imagined Byzantine past.

Der renommierte Schweizer WELTBUCH Verlag legt mein Buch "Doppelmord", das 2014, also 100 Jahre nach Sarajevo, veröffentlicht wurde, neu auf.
Es ist verstörend, dass 12 Jahre danach die Weltmächte durchaus bereit scheinen, wenn gewisse Bedingungen eintreten, einen neuen Weltkrieg, der diesmal noch viel schrecklicher werden würde als die beiden vorhergehenden Weltkriege, auszulösen.
Ebenso verstörend ist, dass die Entscheidung der früheren deutschen Bundeskanzlerin, die Tore nach Deutschland weit aufzumachen und vornehmlich jeden, der behauptet ein Immigrant aus Mittelost zu sein, einzuladen.
Dem gegenüber steht eine unfähige Europäische Union, die nicht in der Lage ist, die wirklichen Probleme, nämlich Immigration, Inflation und Verteidigung zu lösen.
Ein österreichischer Bundespräsident, der meint wir brauchen einen "Europapatriotismus" scheint Patriotismus mit Zustimmung zu einem lediglich wirtschaftsfördernden europäischen Bündnis (EWG) zu verwechseln.
27 Staaten mit verschiedenster Geschichte, die noch vor 100 Jahren übereinander hergefallen sind, taugen nicht dazu, sich patriotisch zu fühlen.
Wenn Christopher Clark von den "Schlafwandlern" spricht, so ist es heute noch ärger, denn die noch so schwachen Spitzenpolitiker in Europa sollten wissen, dass die globale Sicherheit auf ein Minimum geschrumpft ist.
1914 konnte zum Beispiel Kaiser Franz Joseph noch meinen, ein vernünftiges Ultimatum an Serbien würde keinen Weltkrieg auslösen - was wir in unserem Buch zu beweisen versuchen - was aber der alte Herr nicht wissen konnte, ist, dass für Frankreich, England aber auch Russland die christlichen Monarchien in Mitteleuropa ein Dorn im Auge waren.
Für Italien, das die längste Zeit mit Österreich-Ungarn und Deutschland verbündet war, gilt der Ausspruch eines früheren bayerischen Ministerpräsidenten: "Italien ist wie ein Schnitzel, je mehr man es klopft, desto größer wird es."
Die Situation heute ist ähnlich wie 1914, ohne jetzt in Details zu gehen, aber man sollte, was man nicht tun wird, aus den Geschehnissen des Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieges lernen.
Die ewige Vergangenheitsbewältigung, ohne Zukunftsvorstellungen, wird die Probleme sicherlich nicht lösen.

Sommer 1914: von Sarajevo bis zur Kriegserklärung

Doppelmord

Nach seinen Werken zur Logik, Erkenntnistheorie und Wahrnehmungslehre wendete er sich für einige Jahre, ab ca. 1908, gesellschaftsphilosophischen und politischen Überlegungen zu. Palágyi überträgt seinen Vitalismus und seine "monistische Polaritätsphilosophie" auf seine Gesellschaftsphilosophie. "Monismus" steht dabei für das, trotz unendlicher Fortschrittsfähigkeit des menschlichen Bewusstseins, nie erreichbare Ziel vollendeter Harmonie und für ein Erkenntnisstreben, das an klassische Metaphysik erinnert. Das Polaritätsdenken ermöglicht eine Fülle von erhellenden Unterscheidungen und die Betrachtung des Ineinanderverwobenseins der Gegensätze, ohne die gleichsam organisch verbundenen Pole auseinanderzureißen. 
 In der Vorrede zur zweiten Auflage seiner "Naturphilosophischen Vorlesungen" (1924) schreibt Palágyi: "Man sieht also, daß mein Denken von der mangelhaften Polarität des Menschen ausgeht und in die vollendete kosmische Polarität einmündet." So ist sein Werk, trotz ausgeprägter Skepsis und Desillusioniertheit, von einem deutlichen vitalistischen Wissenschaftsoptimismus geprägt. 

Im Licht seiner monistischen Polaritätsphilosophie erscheint jede politische/philosophische Ideologie als eine zum System erhobene Einseitigkeit und zum System erhobener Selbstwiderspruch. Diese haben fatale Auswirkungen für die Menschheit, sofern sie in die Realität umgesetzt werden. 
In seinem Essay "Philosophie des nationalen Gedanken" (1908) entwickelt er die polare Beziehung von Nation und Völkersystem. Die Nationen stehen in einem Verhältnis von Konkurrenz und Solidarität. Der Nationenbegriff wird deutlich positiv gefasst. Eine Nation soll sich nicht in chauvinistischer Überheblichkeit über andere stellen, aber jede Nation wird als eine Gemeinschaft gesehen, die sich auf ihre individuelle Art und Weise bemüht, stellvertretend alle Probleme der Menschheit zu lösen. Nur dadurch sei ein Beitrag einer Nation zum Menschheitsfortschritt möglich.
Palágyi sieht eine sich gegenseitig durchdringende Einheit von nationaler Existenz und universeller Menschheit bzw. europäischem Völkersystem. Revolutionäre Bewegungen, die demokratische Nationalstaaten mitgeschaffen haben, werden bejaht. Dagegen steht seine radikale Ablehnung von Ideologien, deren Weltanschauung auf falschen Gegensätzen beruhen, wie dem von sich ausschließender europäischer und nationaler Verpflichtung. Seit er denken könne, sei er ein Gegner von chauvinistischer und imperialistischer Politik gewesen.
Praktisch zeigt Palágyi das in seinen während des Ersten Weltkrieges publizierten Aufsätzen (Die Krise der europäischen Zivilisation). Im Gegensatz zu anderen bedeutenden Wissenschaftlern lässt sich Palágyi in dieser Zeit nicht von einem sich euphorisch-idealistisch gegebenden Patriotismus, bzw. brutalem Chauvinismus anstecken. Seine Kritik ist stets mit einer konstruktiven Skizze seiner Gesellschaftsphilosophie verbunden, z.B. im Antwortschreiben an den französischen Schriftsteller und Ökonomen Alfred de Tarde (1880-1925). 

1909 veröffentlichte Palágyi seine Studie "Marx und seine Lehre" (hier um ca. 1/3 gekürzt). 
Palágyi verwirft in dieser Marxismuskritik die Theorie des Klassenkampfes und einen einseitigen wirtschaftlichen Materialismus, dessen entmenschlichende Züge er scharf vorausgesehen hat. Er spürt der subjektiven Psychologie von Marx nach und legt Selbstwidersprüche in seinem Begriffssystem dar, die für Palágyi die logische Grundlage der zerstörerischen Seite des Marxismus bilden. 
Er stellt die Wirkung der Französischen Revolution auf Marx¿ Philosophie dar, sowie den doppelten Charakter der Französischen Revolution von 1789.
Im letzten Abschnitt skizziert Palágyi wieder einige Grundlagen eines noch zu schaffenden Gesellschaftsbildes, das Geist und Seele des Menschen und die Vielfalt der konstruktiven Kräfte berücksichtigt. 
Neben dem monumental begabten, aber in Palágyis Auffassung zerstörerischem Marx sieht er Ferdinand Lassalle (Lassalle und die Sozialisten, 1913) als überragenden Vertreter eines menschlich-konstruktiven, verbürgerlichten Sozialismus. Nicht das Postulat des Klassenkampfes (als falsche Gleichsetzung von Zerstörung mit konstruktiver Schöpfung) habe dieser vertreten, sondern eine Art ethischer Selbstprüfung des Arbeiterstandes gefordert, ob dieser der Aufgabe gewachsen sei, die Führung bei Erneuerung und Aufbau der Nationen zu übernehmen.

An examination of the uses, meanings, and social impact of Viking Age textiles.

This volume offers the first full study of archaeological fabrics and their decoration found in the North Atlantic region and dating broadly from the Viking or Norse period. With contributions from both academic scholars and practitioners, it shows how approaching early medieval textiles from archaeological, historical and literary contexts, and through the processes of learning and employing the traditional skills of making them, brings about a more nuanced understanding of early medieval cloths: their creation, use and meanings within their respective societies. 

The book is divided into two parts.
