Rare Tongues is an enthralling tour around the rarest languages in the world.

Gibb L: Rare Tongues

Rare Tongues

The Secret Stories of Hidden Languages

INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLERBrothers, Super Bowl Champions, and now, published authors. That’s right, authors. Look, we’re as surprised as you.New Heights hosts Jason and Travis Kelce attempt to tackle some of life’s dumbest questions from the 92%ers. Join us on this discovery of knowledge as we cover topics like sports, relationships, parenting, gorilla fights, and many more quandaries that man has pondered since he first gazed upon the stars.

FOOTBALL: Why don’t players squirt their own water?

CUISINE: Do you pour the cereal first or the milk?

SCIENCE: If you could make one of your body parts detachable, which would you choose?

When you think philosophy, you’ll probably think of names like Socrates, Plato, or Aristotle. But none of those men have won a single Super Bowl, so what do they know? No Dumb Questions is a collection of Jason and Travis’s wisest, funniest, and most electric debates that could only come from the collected wisdom of a combined twenty-seven seasons in the NFL.

Jason and Travis Kelce—brothers, Super Bowl champions, and New Heights podcast hosts—tackle their first book, No Dumb Questions, where the 92%ers get in on the fun to ask questions about sports, science, relationships, and whatever category “how many holes does a straw have” falls into. This fraternal duo has dominated the football field and the podcast charts alike. Now, they take on a new opponent—life’s greatest mysteries—with spirited answers to their fans’ most burning questions such as:

FOOTBALL: What is a “down”? (Is it, like, dropping the ball?)

IN THE HUDDLE: Why don’t players squirt their own water?

RELATIONSHIPS: What would you do if you lived in a split household who root for rival schools?

BROTHERHOOD: Which brother lifts the heaviest weights in the weight room?

CUISINE: Do you pour the cereal into the bowl first, or the milk?

MAD SCIENCE: If you could make one of your body parts detachable, which would you choose?

And so much more...

Packed with a slew of famous guests, insider football knowledge, and everything fans have wanted to know about growing up Kelce, No Dumb Questions perfectly captures the Kelce brothers at their wisest and funniest, no matter the subject.

Routledge Studies in Sociolinguistics

Language Attitudes and the Pursuit of Social Justice explores the relationship between language attitudes and forms of inequality and oppression, fostering greater awareness of how linguistic choices become political ones and encouraging the search for practices that promote social justice. The volume is organized around different sections that look at language attitudes and their intersections with different dimensions of contemporary social and cultural life, including language policy and planning, language and education, and the role of identity in forming strong communities that promote multilingualism and multiculturalism. Both established and emerging scholars explore the ways in which language attitudes are informed by extralinguistic factors, drawing on case studies involving French, Italian, and Spanish in Canada; interaction of migrant languages in Austria; national languages in West Africa and Senegal; signed languages in Spain; Spanish in Aruba, Uruguay, the US, Catalonia, and Majorca; and Quechua in Peru. The collection urges the development of critical linguistic awareness and a view of languages which recognizes that they shift and change across time and space. This book will be of particular interest to scholars of sociolinguistics, multilingualism, language education, language policy and planning, and bilingual education.

Schwerpunkte bilden u.a.

The Korean Wave in Translation

From Koreanness to K-ness: Contemporary Korean Culture and Society aims to conceptualise 'K-ness' as a new way of understanding the underlying characteristics that shape the semiotic, cultural, and sociological representations of contemporary Korean culture and society. The global popularity of Korean cultural content has sparked extensive interest in various facets of the Korean language, culture, and society. These recent changes present a unique opportunity to reassess and reshape our approach to the theorisation of 'Koreanness' as a strong national identity significantly influenced by Confucian values, patriarchy, and patriotism. Indeed, a multitude of K-words - including the ever-popular domains of 'K-pop', 'K-drama' and 'K-food' - reflect the diverse but coherent manifestations of the new Koreanness, which often transcends the boundaries of tradition and history. In this interdisciplinary edited volume, the contributors provide fresh insights into the new Koreanness that has been reshaped by the current international popularity of Korean popular culture, the emergence of new media, and the cross-cultural encounters in the more globalised environment. By exploring themes, topics, and theories linked to ongoing discussions and emerging trends, this book illuminates the multidimensional nature of 'K-ness'.
