Genders and Sexualities in History

This book analyzes the relation between the Churches’ official teachings regarding ‘desired’ and forbidden forms of sexual behaviour on the one hand, and mundane practice on the other hand, focusing on perspectives ‘from below’. Since the very beginning, Christianity has sought to regulate the love lives of its believers. The clergy’s growing influence on state institutions and the introduction of Christian sexual ethics left its mark on law, education and social norms. However, the everyday lives of most believers had little in common with the sexual norms propagated by clerics. The territory of Poland is especially interesting due to the fact that over the centuries different Christian confessions as well as distinct ethnic groups with various cultural norms co-existed there. Additionally, this edited collection looks at different groups of actors, such as peasants, the clergy or townspeople from the Early Middle Ages until the late twentieth century, and also includes different types of sources as well as of methodological approaches. This long-term perspective shows the impact and influence of Church teachings in a longue durée, and highlights social factors that both shaped discourses on sexuality and also indicated the changing power of the Church.

Miss X, making the accusation, claims she was tricked into queer sex, many times, by a best friend pretending to be her boyfriend. But that friend, Gayle Newland, tells a different story. This contextual analysis is missing from the original law reports as well as the legislation that we see in operation today. This open access book is a cultural history of lawsuits that explains the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, via the roaring Twenties, and into Post-War France. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights used French court rooms, newspaper scandals, and international conferences to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. Towards the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre, the rise of modern celebrity culture and mass media, to the French governments' management of radio entertainment in the interwar period, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime, while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories.
