Black Lives in the Diaspora: Past / Present / Future

There is a common narrative of Brazilian racial exceptionalism-that Brazilian society is more racially harmonious than other multiracial countries or, more simply, that Brazil is less racist than the United States. Many Brazilians even point to anti-Black violence in the United States to exceptionalize their own country, minimizing the structural barriers facing Afro-Brazilians and the degree to which racial inequality and prejudice permeate Brazilian society. Reighan Gillam offers a new perspective by showing how Afro-Brazilians draw on African American history and culture to argue that Brazil is typical, not exceptional, emphasizing common experiences across the African diaspora. Diasporic Connections explores how Afro-Brazilians find parallels with African Americans in performance, films, print culture, and everyday conversation. Gillam considers cases such as a staging of Katori Hall's play The Mountaintop and the appearance of Black Power figures at lectures and in films. She examines how Afro-Brazilian activists seek to instill the energy of the Black freedom struggle into local social movements, underscoring that lessons from the United States are applicable to Brazil while insisting on their own agency. Discussions of Black representation on television, the visibility of mixed-race people, and the shared experiences of Black women across national boundaries all call Brazilian exceptionalism into question. Based on textual analysis, ethnography, and close interpretation of key works, this book highlights how Afro-Brazilians reframe Brazil's racial politics as unexceptional and reveals the surprising ways that diasporic ties are forged.

Debating Planetary Politics offers a range of perspectives that together provide a comprehensive overview of the issues and ideas central to the emerging field of planetary politics, giving due attention to its history, while primarily and uniquely advancing the contemporary state of the debate.An eco-centric planetary politics first became a prospective new turn for the world politics of humanity when scientists around 1970 discovered that the Earth system, including its biospheric ecology, exists in a biogeochemical composition which enables and furthers the conditions for life on this planet, and that our species is causing an Earth system crisis that is jeopardizing planetary habitability. This book examines how to best navigate through this Earth system crisis and expands on what planetary politics is about by including multispecies and critical perspectives that were not prominent before. It is argued that the current global governance architecture is inadequate for ending the crisis. We will need a new planetary politics. But what do we have in mind when we talk about planetary politics? This complex inter- and transdisciplinary debate does not only require a sound grasp of the relevant Earth system science, but also of the cultural, social, economic, and political worldviews and practices that have brought about the present malaise, and of how old and new alternatives might enable constructive steps forward. This book therefore has a diverse group of expert contributors. They offer a variety of complementary and competing theoretical perspectives from Political Science, Political Theory, Political Economy, International Relations, Philosophy, and Sociology, getting to the core of what thinking in terms of planetary politics signifies in different registers.Establishing planetary politics as its own distinct field, Debating Planetary Politics is important reading for students and scholars from a range of disciplines, including Global Environmental Politics, Political Science, International Relations (IR), Political Theory/Philosophy, Development Studies, Political Economy, Earth System Science, Environmental Humanities, Global/Intellectual History, Political Geography, Political Sociology, and Science and Technology Studies (STS).

La question du développement durable exige une rigueur dans les notions de choix, d'organisation et de mise en œuvre. Face à une injustice effroyable, dans une société abandonée à la ruine, telle une poubelle par laquelle ne passe et ne repasse un projet de salubrité, l'écrivain se doit de prendre sa plume et peindre à belle vue, les maux qui se défilent en mots, en vain. C'est ce que fait l'auteur, en se lançant dans cette écriture épistolaire où, dans une fiction proche de la réalité, il communique en bons citoyens, l'iconique Duala Manga Bell, quelques citoyens camerounais et l'apologiste du succès qui, joue l'intermédiaire. Cet ouvrage n'est seulement pas un récit ni une simple narration, il est une imagination très proche de la réalité, qui transcende les limites du temps, pour mettre en contact des concitoyens camerounais d'une époque à ceux d'une autre.

The issue of sustainable development demands rigor in the concepts of choice, organization, and implementation. Faced with appalling injustice, in a society abandoned to ruin, like a garbage dump through which no sanitation project ever passes or re-passes, the writer must take up his pen and clearly depict the ills that are merely flung into words, in vain. This is what
the author does, embarking on this epistolary writing where, in a fiction close to reality, he communicates, as good citizens, the iconic Duala Manga Bell, several Cameroonian citizens, and the apologist for success who acts as intermediary. This work is not merely a story or a simple narrative; it is an imaginative work very close to reality, which transcends the limits of time, to connect fellow Cameroonians of one era with those of another.

Ng¿g¿ wa Thiong'o is Kenya's most prolific writer. He was born in Limuru (Central Kenya) in 1938 and educated at Makerere University (Uganda) and Leeds University (UK). He is well known internationally as a novelist, a playwright and a literary critic. His novels, aWeep Not, Child (1964), The River Between (1965), A Grain of Wheat (1967), Petals of Blood (1977) and Devil on the Cross (1980), have established him firmly in the world literary scene. He has had an impact with the
plays The Black Hermit (1968), 'This Time Tomorrow' (published in Short African Plays) and The Trial of Dedan Kimathi (1976), written with Mðcere Gðthae Møgo. Ng¿g¿ wa M¿ri¿ was born in Rolomo, Limuru in 1951. He was educated in Ngenia Secondary School and, from 1972 to 1974, worked with Kenya Posts and Telecommunications. He took a Diploma in Adult Education at the Institute of Adult Studies, University of Nairobi, and then joined the Institute for Development Studies. Whilst working at the Institute, he became involved with peasants and workers in Community Development at Kamirithu, Limuru.
