In a very short time, LGBTQ issues have moved from the margins to the mainstream of American political life. The 1969 Stonewall Riots are commonly considered the start of the modern gay rights movement in the United States and within a few short years the number of gay groups and gay magazines precipitously increased. As gay civil society expanded, homosexuality transformed from a social identity to a political identity. On the basis of that identity, gay and lesbian activists engaged the political system to secure social and political rights in direct competition with religious traditionalism. This book investigates the development and the political implications of the LGBTQ rights movement in the United States. Oldmixon, Blackstone, and Watson aim to understand and explain the role of this movement in pluralistic, contemporary political life in the United States. Highlighting the cultural narrative, the book considers how the rights movement emerged and developed historically, at the mass level, and in the context of political institutions. First examining the science of sexuality, the book then discusses the development of an equal rights movement and the public’s attitudes on gays and lesbians. LGBTQ voting and representation, policies that involve gay rights, and a comparative perspective are also addressed. The book makes sure to not only examine lesbian, gay, and bisexual rights, but to also include discussion of transgender rights and the broader queer community. Queer Politics is a comprehensive, much-needed text for LGBTQ politics classes. Anna Sampaio's book provides an overview of Latina political participation and activism beginning in the late 19th century, highlighting the history and experiences of the three largest populations of Latinas in the U.S. - Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban American women. Their history of participation is not only central to our understanding of racial, ethnic and gender politics specifically, but American politics generally. This book serves as a tool that will inform students about the changing forms of political activism and participation of Latinas in the U.S. and about the ways that race and gender can serve as modes of analysis for conducting research.

Anna Sampaio’s book provides an overview of Latina political participation and activism beginning in the late 19th century, highlighting the history and experiences of the three largest populations of Latinas in the U.S. – Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban American women. Sampaio develops the history of Latina political engagement and activism over the course of five main chapters, beginning with a discussion of colonization, naturalization, and immigration focused on U.S. expansion into the Southwest and the islands of Puerto Rico and Cuba, and extending through the expansion of Latina/o labor in the first half of the 20th century, the social protest movements of the 60s and 70s, and the shifts in activism over the last 30 years. The book examines Latina political participation in each stage by considering how their identity, activism, and political participation were shaped and how they transformed the political landscape around them. At the same time, Sampaio uses ideas from feminist theory to adopt an analytical lens, highlighting questions of gender, race, class and their intersection throughout the periods of political history examined in these chapters. Whether it is organizing immigrant activists in response to restrictive legislation proposed in Congress, providing feminist critiques of leaders in the Chicano movement, or mobilizing voter turnout in key elections, Latinas have always engaged in politics. Depending on who you ask, artificial intelligence is our salvation or our doom; an overhyped, bigoted artist or the ticket to immortality and utopian abundance; just another tech fad or the last invention we need ever make. The AI discourse is confusing, messy, and frustrating. But the technology — and our response to it — will shape the future, whether or not we’re part of the conversation.
Obsolete is&nbsp;for those who are interested in learning more about AI, but unsure of where to start and who to believe. They may feel intimidated by the technical jargon, put off by dry and abstract prose, or skeptical of the loudest voices on the issue (like Elon Musk and Sam Altman). Art’s obsession with politics is a problem, even a paradox. The more art there is, the less it shares with the political. Even the radical character of contemporary artistic practices revolves around the idea that there are no alternatives to liberal democracy and capitalist pluralism without risking another dystopia – a paradigm that, in the artistic realm, is articulated as the opposition between modernism and postmodernism. Indeed, with three recent transformations of our understanding; of emancipatory politics; the nature of aesthetics; and the post-Fordist transformation of capitalism, many argue that we overcome the fundamental challenges of aesthetic and political modernities and encounter ‘things’ beyond power relations and beyond aesthetics. However, even at its most creative, art has more in common with hegemony than capitalism. At every hegemonic turn, artwork is directed against itself, only to reinstate another art form in order to continue. This book looks at the problem of hegemony from an aesthetical perspective and argues that there is a ‘hegemonic trap’ pointing us in the direction of the alteration rather than alternative. Julia Svetlichnaja asks: Can art become hegemony? What is proposed is not Paolo Virno's ‘exit', it is the ‘exit’ from thinking about the ‘world-making’ in terms of alternative. What if instead of searching for alternatives we perform an alteration and pluralise modernism? The aesthetic project of the alteration of hegemony through the pluralisation of modernism does not represent hope for a better, different, political order but a space for problematisation, overlapping and contaminations of a number of social orders. The idea is to think about the world not in terms of ‘alternatives,’ but in terms of their absence.
