On 30 May 1767, much against her will at the age of sixteen, Elizabeth Berkeley was married to William Craven, 6th Baron Craven. After thirteen years of marriage, seven children, and affairs reported on both sides, the couple parted permanently in 1780. She then travelled on the continent and maintained a romantic relationship with Alexander, Margrave of Brandenburg-Ansbach. During her years at the Ansbach court, Lady Craven formed an amateur theatre at court. When the Margrave's wife and Lord Craven died, she and Alexander were married and settled in England. Snubbed by her new husband's cousin, George III, and by Marie Antoinette because of her louche reputation, she nevertheless created Benham Park with Capability Brown and numbered Dr Johnson - who described her as 'glamorous and fascinating' - Horace Walpole, William Beckford and Charles Pigott among her friends and acquaintances. Her life was gilded, scandalous, and lived to the full. Her travel writing was as good as any male writer's, and as a a female outsider she could enter where men could not - into the harems of the east for example. Tellingly, Joshua Reynolds could not finish his portrait of Elizabeth with her daughter: perhaps because he could not reconcile the loving mother before him with her celebrity image as fashionable hostess and female playwright.

The Dala Law is known through only one remaining medieval manuscript, written c.1335 - 1353, and shows strong influence from older Swedish provincial law. It is one of the oldest known texts revealing details of life and conditions in medieval Dalar during the thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries.Contradicting older assumptions that this might have been an older law of Västmanland, the Dala Law is well adapted to prevailing conditions in medieval Dalarna Dalar. In contrast to most provincial laws where the lawman had a central position, in the Dala Law it is the written word, the law-book, that is addressed and appealed to. Although the text is comparatively short, this English translation is an important tool for facilitating the internationalisation of Swedish research and making Nordic material more accessible for international scholars. This book explores how, over two centuries, the Russian meaning of the rule of law has been reflected in the legal doctrine, legislation, formal and informal practices of legal and political institutions, and also everyday life and the perceptions of Russian citizens at large and certain minority groups. 

The authors argue that legal dualism – the tension between constitutionalism and political expediency – explains the rise and fall of multiple ways in which the parts of the Russian state interact with each other and with citizens, and in which citizens and businesses interact among themselves both at home and abroad.
