A major new political history of the French Revolution In 1786, France’s ancien régime was functioning as usual. Its alliance with the victorious American colonies had restored its diplomatic prestige, the economy seemed to be flourishing, and internal politics seemed quiet. But just a few short years later, the dynasty which had ruled France for over 800 years was swept away. What happened to cause such devastating change to the long-established political structure? John Hardman traces the political history of the French Revolution, from its origins to its aftermath. Hardman argues that the nature of ancien régime politics, the mismanagement of the fiscal crisis, and a new generation of young, overly confident politicians brought the Bourbon monarchy’s apparatus crashing down. He shows how feudalism was on its last legs in 1789, and analyses the key roles played by Louis XVI, Antoine Barnave, and Georges Danton. This is a remarkable history of one of modern Europe’s defining moments, shedding new light on the complex politics of the day.

From the national bestselling author of Banyan Moon, a captivating, evocative story of two estranged sisters on a quest to find a painting by a forgotten Vietnamese artist that holds the truth of their family’s fractured past. Aside from the fact they are sisters, Vivi and Calla Nguyễn have little in common.Vivi, the eldest, lives an orderly and predictable life. She works as an art conservator at a museum in Chicago, carefully preserving pieces of the past, all the while refusing to examine her own dark history. Calla leads a much bolder, if occasionally reckless, existence. She’s an accomplished artist with a flair for the dramatic, charming and intriguing everyone she meets. She’s also a recovering addict, constantly causing Vivi to worry.Months after the two fall out in the wake of their father’s death, Calla appears on the steps of the museum with a sketch and a letter she found in their father’s belongings. The sketch is an exact copy of Blue Mirror, a striking painting by a Vietnamese painter named K.P. Lý. In the letter, Lý writes about a mysterious lost work of art. Calla is convinced it is meant for their family, and that it was their father’s deathbed wish for her and Vivi to find it together. Intrigued yet reluctant to follow her capricious sister, Vivi must decide whether she’s willing to face or shut the door to the past. From the ghostly Wisconsin woods to a glittering estate in the French countryside to a sprawling ancestral home teetering on the edge of a ravine in Việt Nam, The Seekers of Deer Creek is a story of sisters, art, and the irresistible gravity of the past—how it endures across time and generations, always present even when buried.

A Novel

The Seekers of Deer Creek

'Savä writes with both sensuality and coolness, as if determined to find a rational explanation for the irrationality of existence...' New York Times 'I fell in love with this book.' Katie Kitamura, author of Audition and A Separation The mesmerizing debut novel by the author of The Anthropologists set in Paris and Istanbul, about a young Turkish woman grappling with her past and her complicated relationship with a famous British writer. After her mother's death, Nunu moves from Istanbul to a small apartment in Paris. One day outside of a bookstore, she meets M., an older British writer whose novels about Istanbul Nunu has always admired. They find themselves walking the streets of Paris and talking late into the night. What follows is an unusual friendship of eccentric correspondence and long walks around the city. M. is working on a new novel set in Turkey and Nunu tells him about her family, hoping to impress and inspire him. She recounts the idyllic landscapes of her past, mythical family meals, and her elaborate childhood games. As she does so, she also begins to confront her mother's silence and anger, her father's death, and the growing unrest in Istanbul. Their intimacy deepens, so does Nunu's fear of revealing too much to M. and of giving too much of herself and her Istanbul away. Most of all, she fears that she will have to face her own guilt about her mother and the narratives she's told to protect herself from her memories. A wise and unguarded glimpse into a young woman's coming into her own, Walking on the Ceiling is about memory, the pleasure of invention, and those places, real and imagined, we can't escape.

The Story of the City

This open access book offersa cultural history of lawsuits that traces the development of French performance rights from la Belle Époque, throughthe Roaring Twenties, and into thePost-War period. It does so by analysing the ways in which performers, composers, and playwrights took to French courtrooms, sought attention in mass media, and participated in political debates to claim their rights to create and control musical and theatrical performance. In 19th-century France, composers and playwrights organised in member-run societies that successfully used authors' rights legislation to curb the power of theatre managers. By the turn of the 20th century, these so-called collective management organisations had transformed French cultural industries by building out structures of royalty collection and improving litigation practices. From the café-concert culture in 19th-century Montmartre and the rise of modern celebrity culture, to mass media and radio entertainment, the book traces precedent-setting litigation that defined who creates and controls performance. The book challenges previous narratives that centre the individualisation of authors in the expansion of the international copyright regime while neglecting performers. Instead, it reveals the ways in which the personality and individuality of performers have played a constitutive role in discourses about genius, technology, and legal categories. Performance as Intellectual Property is for anyone interested in the emergence of modern European cultural industries and the relationships between intellectual property systems, creativity, and art. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com Open access was funded by the European Research Council.

The Rights of Performers, Composers and Playwrights in France 1890-1950

Performance as Intellectual Property

This landmark collection provides new insights, concepts and techniques to understand and respond to tort claims based on illegal conduct. It is the first comparative study of this difficult field, which has remained contested despite numerous decisions of the highest courts in the common law world. The collection draws on scholars from common law and civilian jurisdictions spanning Argentina, Australia, Brazil, England and Wales, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Scotland, Singapore, Spain, South Africa and Sweden. Together they set out fact patterns, and justifications for tort liability to illustrate the coherence and unity that exists when courts address such claims. While common law legal systems have developed a specific defence of illegality for some of those fact patterns, civilian jurisdictions tend to see illegality operating, if at all, through the existing components of tort liability. The book explains how these different approaches have been reached, how they work, and what they reveal about reasoning in tort.

Understanding Tort Claims and Illegality

France's next presidential election is due by 2027 at the latest; and the far-right Rassemblement National is favoured to win. Founded by the antisemitic Jean-Marie Le Pen, the RN--previously the Front National--was a fringe entity until daughter Marine took over. She 'detoxified' the party, then brought in telegenic young protégé Jordan Bardella as its face in the 2020s. Together, they echo voters' economic grievances and disgust at French political culture, while blasting 'mass immigration' of Muslims and foreign 'criminals'--all starkly reminiscent of Donald Trump's strategy in winning the White House. France--central to the European project--is the far right's next great prize. In 2024, the RN became the largest party in both the EU Parliament and the French Assembly. In vivid, sharp prose, from the halls of power to the campaign trail, veteran correspondent Victor Mallet explains how the far right won over the country and became a government in waiting--one preparing to transform France, Europe and the world.

A Mind of Her Own is a powerful historical drama about a young woman's fight to chart her own destiny, challenging norms for women of the time, from billion-copy bestselling author Danielle Steel. Born in Paris in 1900, at the dawn of a new century, Alexandra Bouvier was raised believing that, with hard work and dedication, she can achieve anything. But when World War One erupts across Europe, coupled with the fast-spreading Spanish flu, Alex's world is upended. By the age of eighteen, she has already suffered unimaginable losses. Bravely setting sail for a new life in America, Alex is taken in by her last living relative, her grandfather. He owns a small but respected Illinois newspaper and agrees with her modern ideas, despite the restrictions imposed on women of the time. With his support, Alex attends university and her journalistic talent secures her an internship with a New York newspaper, where she meets crime reporter Oliver Foster. The two are drawn to each other, though both fear any attachment. Alex is determined to remain true to her ambitions. By doing so, Alex is not only following her dreams, but also changing history for other women of her day - and all those who will come after her.

A Mind of Her Own

The book examines the practice of judicial reasoning in Tort law, understood as a process of justification, consisting of both deductive and non-deductive elements, and therefore involving a significant element of choice or discretion. The book divides the elements of judicial reasoning into four conceptual categories: factual assessments, application of legislative and judge-made rules, reliance on reasonableness, and policy considerations. To discuss these elements in a comparative perspective the book uses the English and French judicial traditions of Tort law as case studies. This enables the author to present a range of methods of establishing facts, drawing inferences, using legal sources and relying on policy arguments. By closely examining selected Tort judgments from both jurisdictions, the book elucidates the phenomenon of law-making through adjudication in both a non-codified and a codified system of liability. It offers a reflection on different approaches legal systems may adopt to the importance in the process of judicial justification of such issues as certainty and truth, common sense, consistency with previous judicial decisions and policy.
The book connects the choice of approaches in judicial reasoning in Tort law with its procedural and institutional context.

This book examines the practice of judicial reasoning in Tort law. Drawing on comparative examples from the French judicial tradition, it connects the choice of approaches in judicial reasoning with its procedural and institutional context.
