An in-depth exploration of the network of agencies involved in policing child pornography—and what the future of security and care looks like. Facing the Child investigates the technocratic expertise in the policing of child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Mitali Thakor argues that CSAM has come to be framed as primarily a digital problem, to be resolved digitally, thereby unleashing a new form of corporatized policing helmed by global technology companies. Ambitious in scope, this multi-sited global ethnography draws on four years of original fieldwork and interviews with technology companies in the US, the United Nations in Bangkok, Thai and Dutch NGOs, and law enforcement in the US and the Netherlands. The book argues that in the 2010s, a network of technology companies, NGOs, and law enforcement created the notion of a “virtual child” in need of techno-solutionist saving to justify a vast expansion of surveillance technologies. The book examines how pervasive myths of child abuse online were exploited to serve the aims of seemingly disparate groups, from Christian neo-abolitionists to NGOs conducting virtual sting operations. It is this complex relationship between the care and securitization needed to fix the child victim as an object of data, concern, and rescue that the book explores.

This book seeks to identify the manifold ways in which the multiple European crises, debt, financial, sociopolitical, refugee (re)construct political polarizations in Greece on the basis of the country’s divided past. This is the first book in the context of Discourse Studies and Political Communication which addresses specifically the Greek political particularities and their importance in both the construction and the expression of different notions of political identity in discourse.&nbsp;The book, written by two linguists, provides a critical interactional approach that combines critical discourse analysis, sociolinguistics, argumentation, political sociology, and social theory. Its interdisciplinary character enriches its theoretical platform and makes it distinctive.&nbsp;While the book centers on the Greek political landscape, it offers valuable insights for the broader study of Western politics and societies, which, like Greece, have in recent years been marked by overlapping crises, polarization, and political instability. We anticipate that readers will identify parallels between the Greek case and their own political realities. Coupled with an innovative methodological approach, this study aims to open new pathways in the analysis of political discourses.

This volume deals with the determinants of both good and bad health, at individual as well as community levels, or in a broader sense, all of which are determined by multiple, critically interlinked actors that are surprisingly concentrated within the built environment. It analyzes the critical challenges in contemporary Indian cities — rapid urbanization accompanied by challenges from climate change, abnormal weather, urban flooding, and many other extreme events.
 This work is a timely effort that encompasses the prospects and constraints of public health when India is rapidly urbanizing, which puts severe strains on pre-existing urban health infrastructure and services to meet basic human needs, along with significant shrinkage of open, green spaces. It is also relevant when India is recovering from the nightmare of the COVID-19 pandemic, which was largely an urban health hazard, and the Indian urban health system needs substantial renewal.
 The book sheds light on those Indian cities, surprisingly two-thirds of the total numbers, that lack local area plans, zonal plans, and master plans. This absence affects a significant proportion of the urban population that is outside the planned neighborhoods, with unplanned, and in most cases inadequate, health infrastructure and services.
 This volume takes into account the typical health behavior in the built environment due to the increasing likelihood of a sedentary lifestyle that leads to anxiety, cardiovascular diseases, depression, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, asthma, and many other similar signs of poor health associated with this lifestyle.
 The book serves to explore the linkages between the isolated notions of green spaces, smart cities, physical activities, mental health, and other beneficial elements. Amid the urban–industrial framework, these factors could be effective in resolving the critical public health crisis in transformative built environments and cityscapes through the synthesis of cross-disciplinary knowledge.
