An Invitation to Undergraduate Research in Risk Management

&lt;p&gt;In recent years, macroeconomic dynamics, social transformations, technological innovations, and regulatory developments have caused significant changes in the banking industry, but most especially the need to integrate ESG factors into corporate strategies. Exploring&amp;nbsp;the commitment towards sustainable business as not only a regulatory compliance obligation but as a value creation opportunity, this book explores ESG factors and sustainability issues in the banking sector and proposes a holistic approach to ESG risks. ESG Integration in the Banking Sector

&lt;p&gt;This book examines several contemporary issues which are shaping corporate governance in the banking sector. These issues have been evolving over the past decade and even more so since the Global Financial Crisis (GFC, 2007-09) revealed many significant weaknesses in corporate governance structures at banks. Alongside major reforms to the architecture of the global financial system, like the introduction of the Basel 3 Accord, the post-GFC emergence of new issues and acceleration in the importance of others is affecting banks, their competitiveness and business models, and their governance structures. For instance, the emergence and rapid growth of FinTech (financial technology), the increasing focus of government and society on CSR (corporate social responsibility) and ESG (environment, social and governance) investing that speaks to the generational issue of the environment, climate change and associated risks. On top of these developments came the COVID-19 health pandemic that has impacted banks and significantly increased the rate of digitalization. Given the many challenges culminating around banks, this book in three sections provides a timely comparison of the factors influencing corporate governance at banks before and after the GFC, and will be of interest to researchers and students in banking and corporate finance alongside practitioners and policymakers.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;

Callable mortgage bonds constitute an enormous asset class and often offer long-term stable investments that are very attractive for pension funds.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="xeop"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p class="xparagraph" style="margin: 0cm; margin-bottom: .0001pt; white-space: pre-wrap;"&gt;&lt;span style="font-variant-ligatures: none!important;"&gt;&lt;span class="xnormaltextrun"&gt;&lt;span lang="EN-GB" style="mso-ansi-language: EN-GB;"&gt;This book focuses on the pricing and calculation of risk numbers of callable fixed-rate mortgage bonds. Owing to the, from a financial perspective, irrational behaviour of borrowers, the pricing of these instruments usually requires the use of numerical solutions. Traditionally, it has been either a Monte Carlo simulation or a Finite Difference method. This book covers both methods and, in addition, the relatively new Fourier technique. This latter technique also creates a link between the interest rate derivatives market and the market for callable mortgage bonds. Finally, a chapter presenting a model for the valuation of a mortgage credit institute&amp;rsquo;s loan book is included.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span class="xeop"&gt;&amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

<p>
Every time a civilization has built a medium that amplifies a familiar cognitive failure faster than existing correction systems can respond, the civilization has discovered, after the fact, that the correction systems were calibrated to the previous medium.

The printing press amplified ecclesiastical miscalibration to continental scale before the village priest could see what was happening. The totalitarian reporting chain amplified harvest inflation to a national famine before the peasant's complaint could travel upward. Securitization amplified local credit misjudgment across a global financial system before the loan officer's memory of the borrower could have mattered. Soviet central planning amplified the committee's model of the economy to seven decades of accumulating shortages before the local market signal could reach the center.

The agent economy is the current instance. Its distinctive feature is not a new failure mode but an old one operating through a medium whose throughput exceeds any previous medium by multiple orders of magnitude, across a layered stack whose architecture makes the correction points from previous eras structurally inapplicable.

The Amplifier traces this pattern across four historical cases, each mapped to one dimension of the Risk Efficacy decision-quality framework: Calibration, Informed Navigation, Resilience, and Outcome Achievement. Each case isolates the cognitive failure, the amplifying medium, the correction system that was stripped out, the collapse, and the institutional response that arrived after. The book then returns to the agent economy with the framework and the history both in hand, walking through the specific enterprise domains where agents are about to make decisions on uncalibrated premises, the predictable trajectory by which the failures will become visible, and the architecture of a calibration layer that could be built before the collapse rather than after.

The question the book poses is not whether the pattern will repeat. The historical record is unambiguous. The question is whether this is the instance in which the correction layer is built on the leading edge rather than the trailing one.

Alia Wu is an applied cognitive scientist and founder of Risk Efficacy. Her work spans clinical neuroscience, quantitative finance, and professional motorsport. She builds measurement systems for decision quality in high-stakes environments. The Amplifier is a companion volume to her Meritocracy Society Infrastructure Series, which includes Risk Efficacy: How to Measure Decision Making in an Age of Uncertainty and The Neurodivergent Advantage: Risk Efficacy and the Measurement of Different Minds.</p>


How the Agent Economy Is Scaling a Cognitive Failure Civilizations Keep Repeating

&lt;p&gt; This book focuses on the linkage between corporate social responsibility (CSR) engagement and innovation strategies in the context of Japanese firms beginning in the late 2000s. Since that time, the firms have faced transformations in their business models and CSR activities in the face of global technological competition. The novelty of this book is that it carefully identifies the channels linking CSR and innovation through employee motivation for creativity and investor awareness of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) issues. As well, the book sheds light on the role of independent sustainability rating agencies as information intermediaries in this linkage. It empirically examines whether and how internal and external stakeholder engagement influences organizational innovation capability and the impact of ESG ratings on that relationship. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; This present work helps to provide a comprehensive understanding of the integration of multi-stakeholder engagement in corporate innovation strategies to survive in changing social and environmental circumstances, with insight into the role of information intermediaries in the integration process. The book has practical implications for strategic CSR to achieve social and environmental sustainability, which are particularly important in Japan.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
