The 1611 King James Bible

First published in 2000, Divided by Faith has become a landmark book for understanding race and religion in the United States. Drawing on a nationwide telephone survey of two thousand people and an additional two hundred face-to-face interviews, it probes the grassroots of white evangelical America. A quarter of a century on from the first edition, Michael O. Emerson and Christian Smith find that despite efforts by the movement's leaders to address the problem of racial discrimination, evangelicals themselves are still preserving America's racial chasm. In fact, most white evangelicals see no systematic discrimination against Black Americans or other racial groups. The authors contend that it is not overt racism that prevents evangelicals from recognizing ongoing problems in American society. Instead, it is the evangelical movement's emphasis on individualism, free will, and personal relationships that makes invisible the pervasive injustice that perpetuates racial inequality. This second edition has been thoroughly overhauled with updated statistics and an additional chapter covering developments over the last twenty-five years. The authors assess the growth of the rise of Christian nationalism, whiteness studies, critical race theory, the racialization of religion, and the religionization of race. Through a large body of evidence combined with sophisticated analysis and interpretation, they throw a bright light on the oldest American dilemma. In the end, they conclude that despite the best intentions of evangelical leaders and some positive trends, real racial reconciliation remains far over the horizon.

ORIGINAL SIN opens with Kathryn Paige Harden taking LSD with her boyfriend in the West Texas desert, precipitating an experience in which he is unable to escape from the sense that he alone is responsible for an apocalyptic event, despite the fact that the event was impossible to avoid. This book examines two main themes which had national significance in eighteenth-century British Methodism. First, the interaction between the two distinct theological expressions of Methodism; Calvinist and Arminian. The 'parting of the ways' marks the first major split in Methodism as the differences of theological understanding changed into the demarcation of religious organisations. The core of the book will feature a series of case-studies which explore Calvinist and Arminian Methodists in a number of key locations, where competition and even religious take-over bids were used by John Wesley's movement to gain religious dominance. Secondly, the book explores the nature of John Wesley's leadership of his movement, and especially how the competition between the Calvinist and Arminian strands of Methodism made it necessary for Wesley to change the way he exercised his leadership and authority. This will be examined through Wesley's role as connexional leader and his relationships with individual preachers and society members. Hart also explores both the reasons his leadership changed over the period of the study and the impact these changes had in the local context. The book will explore how these changes were made necessary by the increasing size of his 'Connexion' and the attendant changes in the application of Wesleyan discipline especially on the itinerant preachers. Whilst much has been written about Wesleyanism, and more specifically about John Wesley as a religious leader, and there is now an increase of interest in George Whitefield and the Calvinist branch of Methodism. This book is unique in examining how the two affected each other at the local level. The book shows that, however united were the leaders of early Methodism even in their theological diversity, in promoting evangelical revival their unity was not strong enough to hold together the religious movements they founded.

Hans Urs von Balthasar's work has had an increasingly significant impact on theology of 20th century. This anthology of Balthasar's writings seeks to encourage readers to take the tour of the 'Balthasarian Cathedral' by employing an architectural metaphor, which is based on Balthasar's own depiction of his thinking. 

The cathedral trope enables readers to locate and engage his works and key themes without losing a sense of the whole. It also provides a blueprint for the structure of Balthasar's thought as a tool to position his writings in order to grasp the breadth and depth of his thinking. So, while the anthology only serves as an introduction by laying out the cathedral floor plan, glancing momentarily at several prominent features, and suggesting extended tours and excursions that require more time and contemplation, it is hoped that patrons will turn these into longer, more sustained gazes of Balthasar's theology. 

This book is enhanced by the inclusion of original source texts and summaries of key ideas, designed to engage with the reader as they survey Balthasar's work. Perhaps, then, the seeds of this anthology will bear the fruit of sustained, critical engagement at a depth indicative of the man himself. Welcome to the tour!
