Narrative and Performance Criticisms

A Difference of Degree or Kind?

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER USA TODAY BESTSELLER NEXT BIG IDEA CLUB MUST READ"An absolutely beautiful book."—Steve Kerr, nine-time NBA Champion; Coach of the Golden State Warriors and Team USAThe definitive book on excellence—beloved by world champion coaches and athletes, award-winning artists, top entrepreneurs and executives, and high performers across fields, from bestselling author Brad Stulberg.Whether you are pushing your limits at the gym, practicing guitar, leading a team, honing a craft, studying medicine, or giving yourself the time and space to finally take on that big creative project, The Way of Excellence is a practical guide to actualizing your potential amid the craziness of modern life. Unlike "pseudo-excellence," which is about hustle culture and hacks, genuine excellence means doing hard things, creating, contributing, and expressing the unique qualities that make you who you are. Too often, we get caught up in convenience and distraction to the detriment of our full potential. Though our environments often work against us, we can overcome the default options and set out on a better path, one that includes more meaning, aliveness, and resonance; more connection to yourself, to others, and to the big projects and goals in your life. Here, Stulberg finds a fascinating convergence between modern science, age-old philosophy, and daily practice to explain that we are wired to strive for excellence—the pursuit of excellence is in our nature, core to our humanity. The way of excellence means learning about:

Why mastery and mattering are key to the good life

Cultivating focus and concentration

Prioritizing consistency over intensity

Confidence based on evidence

Defining, living, and working in alignment with your values

Developing the courage to care deeply

Designing environments that support excellence

Selecting goals based not just on what you want to achieve, but on who you want to become

Overcoming the traps, pitfalls, and barriers to excellence—including alienation, chasing a never-ending supply of dopamine, and addiction to external validation and the opinions of others

Applying the principles and insights of excellence to one's teams, organizations, and communities

At its core, excellence is a deeply-fulfilling process of becoming—the best performer, and person, you can be. Whether you're a high performer looking for something to encourage, inspire, and cement your commitment, or someone brand new on the path, this book shows you the way.

Valindromos

A book about Indian life, inherited behaviour, emotional confusion, family politics, authority, ambition, guilt, language and all the strange things people here quietly accept as "normal."Told through observations, stories and deadpan honesty, In Other Words looks at the country not politically or academically, but personally.Somewhere between humour and discomfort, this book asks a very simple question:how much of who we are was actually chosen by us?

In Other Words

Uncover the psychological shortcuts that shape every decision you make - and learn how to use them in business. Voted #1 in the BBH World Cup of Advertising Books Winner of the Sales and Marketing Category at the Business Book Awards Before you can influence decisions, you need to understand what drives them. The Choice Factory is an essential read for anyone who wants to learn. By observing a typical day of decision-making, from trivial food choices to significant work-place moves, behavioural science expert Richard Shotton investigates how our behaviour is shaped by psychological shortcuts. With a clear focus on the marketing potential of knowing what makes us tick, he draws on evidence from academia, real-life ad campaigns and his own original research. Entertaining and highly accessible, The Choice Factory is made up of 25 short chapters, each addressing a cognitive bias and outlining simple ways to apply it to your own marketing challenges. Shotton interviews some of the smartest and most influential thinkers in advertising, including Rory Sutherland, Lucy Jameson and Mark Earls. Covering everything from priming to the pratfall effect, charm pricing to the curse of knowledge, with The Choice Factory as your guide it has never been easier to apply the science of behavioural economics to marketing. 'Actionable, memorable and powerful' - Seth Godin, bestselling author of This is Marketing Now part of the Harriman House Essentials Collection, a series showcasing the very best of business and finance books.

Die deutsche Wiedervereinigung jährte sich zuletzt zum 35. Mal.
In
Postwendekinder

The author feels that warnings given or advice offered are all too often limited to a particular person or group of people and are frequently not fully understood and even forgotten in time. One only has to look at the increasing dissension, turmoil, hatred, political incompetence, corruption, lack of education, and questionable intellect of the masses, just to name a few, to realize that the human race is hurtling down the road of destruction.
Because of what is presently occurring and being planned for in the future, the eventual demise of a cohabited world community is at grave risk. It grieves the author having to witness the silencing of the voices of wisdom, the deliberate creation of social disharmony, the eradication of freedom, and the acceptance of these by the gullible masses.
Although he is merely a speck on the cog in a massive wheel, the author fervently hopes that his highly thought-provoking quotations will cause readers to take off their rose-colored glasses.

"A Look at Today" VOL. I

What nobody tells you about power, money, and winning in business There is a moment most executives recognize but rarely talk about. You're sitting in a meeting where the language is polite, the slide deck is professional, and everyone in the room knows someone is about to get destroyed. The budget. The team. The product. The career. They call it a strategic review. What it actually is? A knife fight with better lighting. Business isn't fair. Meritocracy is largely a fiction. The people who talk like sages are usually improvising behind the scenes, and the gap between the official version of how companies work and what actually happens inside them is exactly where careers are built-or quietly ended. The Trick Is Not Minding That It Hurts is the book that lives in that gap. It is a blunt, unsentimental field guide to how the system actually works and how to survive it without losing your sanity. After two decades inside the world's most competitive environments-including senior leadership roles at Facebook, Alibaba, and Expedia, followed by years in the private equity trenches-Lee McCabe has seen how power is built, how decisions are really made, and why the "official story" is often the most dangerous one to believe. If you are ready to stop being naive and start navigating the real world of business, this is your guide.

What Nobody Tells You About Power, Money, and Winning in Business

The Trick Is Not Minding That It Hurts

Unheard Stories, Unfiltered Lives

As I Am

Kamal Shair's book is a classic rags to riches story: the village boy, who with determination and education, achieves business success, wealth, more wealth, and then influence and power. What makes it unusual is that it emanates from the Arab world. Rarely among Arabs have individuals from thoroughly modest backgrounds, with no access to links, networks or connections become truly global commercial players. Shair was born in a small town in what was then Transjordan and dragged himself through school (his mother was illiterate), moved to college in Beirut, then sailed off to America (Michigan and Yale) and returned to the Middle East to create a multinational corporate empire engaged in trade, construction and manufacturing. Dar al Handasah - Arabic for House of Engineers - was founded in a small flat in Beirut and today, spans the globe with offices in 37 countries. In its early years, Dar al Handasah fought off competition from established western consultancies to win contracts for prestige engineering throughout the Middle East. Eventually, its activities extended further to Europe, the United States, Africa and Asia. By not following the usual pattern of patronage and favours, Kamal Shair applied a fresh kind of ethic in an environment with a loosely-structured business ethic. In the process, he lived through and witnessed at first hand and at close quarters some of the most dramatic events of the modern Arab world. This is quite an extraordinary tale and a very original prism through which to read the turbulent post-World War II history of the Middle East. At the same time we see the growth, despite all the odds, of one of the world's great engineering and business enterprises in a narrative of epic and inspirational proportions.

A GUIDE FOR THE AFRICAN AND ASIAN DIASPORA

THE BRIDGE TO THE UNITED KINGDOM

Routledge Studies in Religion and Politics

The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks asks 'Who speaks for the Catholic Church during a humanitarian crisis?' and answers that there is no single voice; only a plurality of Catholic actors whose relationships with the Holy See differ sharply, and whose humanitarian work is shaped as much by internal organisational dynamics and Church politics as by the crises they respond to.This book offers the first comparative study of three of the world's most significant Catholic humanitarian networks: the Caritas confederation, the Jesuit Refugee Service, and the Community of Sant'Egidio, through drawing on over thirty interviews and extensive fieldwork in Rome and the Vatican. Each network occupies a distinct status (dependent, semi-dependent, and independent organisations) in relation to Church hierarchy, producing strikingly different approaches to assisting refugees and forced migrants. Moving between the internal governance of the Church and the external landscape of secular humanitarianism, the book exposes a persistent and more nuanced "religious literacy gap" among UN agencies, donors, and NGOs working alongside faith-based partners. Combining an interpretivist, practitioner-informed methodology at the intersection of IR, religion, and humanitarianism, Dr Intropido directly engaged with diplomats, humanitarian workers, and Church officials, offering both a new theoretical account of religious actors in world politics and a practical checklist for anyone partnering with Catholic humanitarian organisations. The Politics of Catholic NGO Networks will be essential reading for students and scholars of religion and politics, international relations, sociology and anthropology of religion, humanitarian, development, and migration studies, and for practitioners navigating the increasingly visible role of religion in global affairs.
