Prevention curtails freedom: cancer prevention entails not smoking; accident prevention entails putting pills in childproof containers; crime prevention entails not stealing things and hitting people. Prevention is usually seen as quite unexciting. Preventive medicine is less dramatic than surgery, crime prevention than detection. However, people doing less of one thing are free to do more of another: obesity prevention makes exercise possible and crime prevention frees up time, money and energy to invest elsewhere. This book seeks to enliven the topic of crime prevention by looking at pro-social behaviour alongside crime, to think of improving the quality of life by both deflecting people from the experience of crime – either as perpetrators, victims, or worried bystanders – and nudging them towards collaborative and altruistic behaviour; by changing things, places and people in ways which push people from crime and pull them towards active citizenship. Based on a series of interviews conducted with researchers within and outside of academia, it aims to capture the personal challenges, ethical dilemmas, practical obstacles, positive rewards and (potential or actual) harmful effects of undertaking critical research concerned with state punishment. It essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students of criminology, media, sociology, journalism, film studies, and cultural studies.

By definition, critical research is a dynamic and political process which recognizes the broad structural contexts within which human action takes place. Critical researchers argue for a more dynamic and reflexive approach to research, and have duties to expose oppressive structures and practices, make audible voices that are habitually silenced, and empower and emancipate marginalized groups and individuals. Investigates the significance of video evidence in criminal trials of police officers charged for on-duty shooting incidents Lawyers describe video evidence as a "game changer" for achieving criminal accountability in police-involved shootings. Despite a proliferation of videos of police-involved violence that attract considerable public attention and condemnation, trials and convictions remain rare. Once promised as a mechanism for delivering police oversight and accountability, video has yet to resolve complaints and achieve consensus about the lawfulness of use-of-force incidents, especially lethal force disproportionately applied to Black and Indigenous people. Trial by Video examines eight criminal cases between 2015 and 2020 of police officers charged for on-duty shootings in the United States and Canada, to examine what video brings, and fails to bring, to criminal trials. Video is widely recognized as critical evidence but is highly contested throughout the trials. Whatever the virtues of video, these cases often turn on adversarial arguments about the motive of the accused officer and the "reasonableness" of force. Watson, Nave, and Lynch interviewed lawyers who worked on these cases, and reviewed court documents, news stories, official reports, and leading case law. While video evidence is thought to "speak for itself," the book shows how video evidence is mobilized through litigation to shape courtroom arguments. In the courtroom, video is played, replayed, technically reconstructed, and subjected to expert commentary, but it is also used as an interrogative tool to contest or corroborate the statements of witnesses, including the accused officer. Ultimately, Trial by Video shows how lawyers, experts, and the accused officers themselves can reappropriate video evidence in order to avoid accountability.

Using an aesthetic culture and techniques termed as jihadi cool, terrorist groups have been able to recruit members from around the world, so how do we begin to respond? This book analyzes the rhetorical and ethical dynamics of a culture of jihadi cool/chic, and why these rhetorical and aesthetic techniques have been such a powerful recruitment force for particular transnational terrorist groups.
