This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.

Equality law is audist. Deaf communities around the world continue to encounter Deaf Legal Exclusion through legal frameworks that define them narrowly and restrict their rights. This book examines why these frameworks have not delivered equality in practice. It argues that the core issue is structural misrecognition: law protects deaf people only when they accept a definition based on impairment. Sign language, culture and community are treated as secondary. What appears to be inclusion is often a Deaf Legal Illusion: equality claimed in principle but absent in practice. The book analyses five models used to categorise deaf people in law and policy: disability, language minority, culturo-linguistic community, ethnic group and Indigenous group. Some appear in legislation; others are found in scholarship and advocacy. Each reflects only part of deaf people's lives. Drawing on doctrinal and socio-legal analysis of the Equality Act 2010, case law of the ECtHR, and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the book critiques how equality law relies on narrow definitions of fairness. It explores formal, substantive and transformative precepts of equality, assessing their ability to reflect deaf people's experiences. It identifies the audist assumptions built into legal systems that expect deaf people to adapt to hearing norms, while withholding full recognition of sign language and community belonging. In response, the book proposes the Deaf Rights Model, which brings the five models together as complementary rather than competing. Alongside Deaf Equality Concepts, it offers a framework in which sign language, culture and community become central to legal thinking about equality. The Deaf Legal Dilemma establishes Deaf Legal Studies as a field grounded in the priorities and expertise of deaf communities. It invites lawmakers, practitioners and scholars to rethink the purpose of the law and the structures through which deaf people are recognised.

L'ouvrage s'adresse spécifiquement aux étudiants en début de cursus, leur fournissant les outils conceptuels nécessaires pour naviguer dans l'ensemble complexe des sciences juridiques, avec une orientation particulière vers les législations belge et française du XIXe siècle.La première partie est dédiée à l'analyse du droit en général et à ses manifestations. Dieser Tagungsband befasst sich mit den Herausforderungen des Gesundheitssektors, einerseits dem Gebot nachhaltigen Handelns und des Klimaschutzes gerecht zu werden, ohne dabei andererseits seine ursprüngliche Aufgabe, Gesundheitsschutz zu gewährleisten, zu vernachlässigen. Aus juristischer Perspektive widmen sich die Beiträge daher den verfassungsrechtlichen und einfachgesetzlichen Rahmenbedingungen einer nachhaltigen Gesundheitsversorgung, auch aus rechtsvergleichender Perspektive. Zudem wird der Einfluss von Nachhaltigkeit auf das individuelle Arzt-Patienten-Verhältnis sowie auf das Medizinprodukterecht beleuchtet. Schließlich werden aus ökonomischer Perspektive mögliche Transformationsprozesse mit dem Ziel der Klimaneutralität aufgezeigt, ergänzt durch aktuelle Ergebnisse aus der Forschung des Deutschen Krankenhausinstituts.

Nachhaltigkeit im Gesundheitswesen

An outstanding feature of this book is that it offers a deep insight into the working of a strategy direction-setting by a visionary CEO supported by the implementational process of the corporate centre staff. This insight sheds light on the centre’s value-creation process, which includes core competence, sense-making, parenting roles, and strategic management styles as well as the organisational and implementational design for both divisional and multi-business corporations. Multiple survey interviews with the CEO and his staff as well as industry specialists and experts from multiple fields and policy incumbents, a qustionnaire survey with the stake holding members, a bibliographical survey, and a document search were carried out with a view to deductive/inductive inferences and hypothesis/construct–creation/verification purposes. The analysis here demonstrates, first, that Bowlby’s attachment theory, sense-making, and conviction narrative clarify the personality traits underpinning managerial stability; and, second, that Max Joseph’s trading asset logic can nicely combine with core competence theory as a binding logic of multi-business practices. It empirically verifies the dictum that excellent though daring strategy must be grounded in solid administrative and financial implementational realities. The book provides a framework for future organisational design including management control tools as it creates a new understanding of business and corporate strategies.

Law and Religion in a Global Context

This book is the first study to consider findings from sociology, legal anthropology, ethnology, legal pluralism, comparative law and theology in order to gain a better understanding of the diverse cultures of global Catholicism and the cross-cultural challenges arising from Roman Catholic canon law within the local churches. The author, renowned for her work at the intersection of socio-legal studies and canon law, examines the latter as a distinctive example of a European religious legal system that cuts across the myriad legal cultures of the local churches. In light of findings on legal transfer and legal colonialism, and by examining canon law within the emerging field of social and cultural studies approaches to law, her book sheds light on how canon law is imposed upon and received by the local churches around the world. It analyses the challenges and problems arising from the law’s transcultural claims within these churches. Based on these observations, the study discusses the critical stance of canon law within contemporary Catholicism and the current debates on a synodal reform of the church and its law.&nbsp; The book adopts different perspectives: As a sociological study, it describes the contemporary Eurocentrism of global canon law and the conflicts arising from it. As a theological study, it presents ecclesiological reasons for challenging the hegemony of global legislation. As a study of canon law, it suggests ways in which legislation could permit greater diversity while maintaining the unity of the universal church. By analysing canon law as a specific example of a religious legal order with cross-cultural ambitions and global claims, the book also contributes to the study of transnational law in general by illustrating the typical problems that accompany transnational legal regimes in both secular legal systems and religious groups.
