Dabei fragen sie nach der Bedeutung des Künstlerischen für die Gesundheit, interessieren sich für moralische, soziale und kulturelle Dimensionen von Gesundheit und Krankheit in Kunst bzw. Medien und bieten theoretische Zugänge für gesundheitliche Analysen an. Bezugsdisziplinen sind u.a. Kunst-, Kultur- und Medienwissenschaften, Philosophie und Geschichte. Die Beiträger*innen leuchten das Spektrum unterschiedlicher Perspektiven und Zugänge der Public Health Humanities erstmals auf Deutsch aus.

Depending on who you ask, artificial intelligence is our salvation or our doom; an overhyped, bigoted artist or the ticket to immortality and utopian abundance; just another tech fad or the last invention we need ever make. The AI discourse is confusing, messy, and frustrating. But the technology — and our response to it — will shape the future, whether or not we’re part of the conversation.
Obsolete is&nbsp;for those who are interested in learning more about AI, but unsure of where to start and who to believe. They may feel intimidated by the technical jargon, put off by dry and abstract prose, or skeptical of the loudest voices on the issue (like Elon Musk and Sam Altman). Obsolete will introduce readers to the basics of AI, the idea that it could lead to human extinction, the roiling three-sided debate surrounding extinction fears, and the people and companies trying to build artificial general intelligence (AGI) — that which can outwit humans across the board. The book will grapple with the core arguments animating the AI debates, which are, by turns, uncritically parroted and unduly dismissed. It will also cut through industry hype while seriously entertaining the implications of AGI.
The risk that AGI could result in our extinction is being recognized by a significant and growing number of leading AI researchers, industrialists, and policymakers, along with the wider public. Existential risk from AI has been explored in other books, but Obsolete will be the first to center its analysis on how both capitalist and great power competition make AI more dangerous.
Obsolete will also tackle questions like: Can machines actually outsmart humanity? If so, when could that happen? If AGI is possible, is it inevitable? Why are people trying to build a technology they claim could end the world? Is the idea of AI-driven extinction the product of a big tech conspiracy aiming to hype the technology and control its regulation? Why has the left mostly ignored or dismissed existential risk from AI? Why do some powerful techies welcome human extinction? How could AI enable stable authoritarian regimes? How workers and customers engage utility regulation to act on climate change, energy affordability, and environmental, racial, and economic injustice. Electric Life traces the intertwined history of Atlanta’s racialized uneven development and growing electricity use to show how electricity infrastructure shapes everyday life. Nikki Luke looks at how quotidian relationships with the electric utility catalyze intersectional organizing for energy democracy. She also investigates the legal and material construction of the investor-owned utility as a regulated monopoly and the state public service commission that regulates it. Contemporary organizing for energy democracy questions how the utility and the systems that govern it need to change to ensure energy affordability, provide remedy and reparation for enduring environmental and energy injustice, and build a just and equitable energy transition from fossil fuels. Bridging urban, environmental, and labor studies, the author demonstrates how these demands to change the utility emerge from the tradition of civil rights, labor, and environmental organizing for fair treatment from the utility, affordable energy, protection from pollution, and good jobs.

A novel perspective on scientific fraud—how undisclosed “tweaks” to research designs and model specifications fuel the credibility crisis in science. In The Credibility Crisis in Science, leading social scientists Thomas Plümper and Eric Neumayer argue that the most important fraudulent strategy is crucially underappreciated. While data fabrication and manipulation are widely recognized as fraudulent, “tweaks”—the intentional selection of research designs and model specifications based on the results they give—are not. The authors of this book contend that the term “scientific fraud” must include tweaks. Tweakers, like other fraudsters, deceive readers by concealing their manipulation of empirical results and they do so to further their own interests. The authors show how easily observational data analyses, experimental designs, and causal models are tweaked in ways that are extremely difficult, often impossible, to detect. As a consequence, the credibility crisis in science is even more severe than both scientists and the public believe. Plümper and Neumayer argue that conventional strategies to deter, prevent, and detect fraud will not work for tweaks. The authors put forth two potential solutions: first, a classification system that categorizes data based on its susceptibility to manipulation and the probability of such manipulation being identified, and second, the proposal that journal editors and reviewers, rather than authors, select robustness tests.
