The first monographic study of American artist Alison Knowles, a significant yet overlooked cofounder of the Fluxus movement. Alison Knowles stands out as the sole female artist among the founders of Fluxus, yet she has remained an enigmatic, underrecognized figure in the history of art. Performing Chance fills a gap in the record, bringing to light Knowles's transformative body of work as it evolved from abstract painting in the late 1950s, to silkscreens, print media, and performance in the early 1960s, to groundbreaking works in digital poetry, acoustical art, and large-scale installations in the late 1960s-70s. Through her access to previously unpublished archival materials and direct interviews with the artist, Nicole L. Woods provides close readings of pivotal works, disclosing the ways Knowles instituted formal tactics that moved beyond modernist painting, championed principles of indeterminacy and chance, and fostered sociopolitical consciousness. Situating Knowles's innovations in various media within the distinct cultural contexts of Wiesbaden, London, Paris, New York City, and Los Angeles, Performing Chance brings this key artist back to her rightful place as a leader of the postwar avant-garde and provides a nuanced history of the role of women artists in Fluxus and beyond.

Hal Fischer: Seminal Works collects Gay Semiotics with Fischer's rarely seen early photography and features a range of essays that provide vital perspectives on the enduring themes of his work.In the late 1970s, as gay men in San Francisco were enjoying a new era of liberation following the Stonewall Riots, Hal Fischer made a signal photo-text project that categorized denizens of the Castro and Haight-Ashbury neighborhoods by social type. Sly and systematic, Fischer's Gay Semiotics portrays the sartorial codes of queer street style--earrings, handkerchiefs, jeans, or leather--that broadcast a range of desires to potential sexual prospects. Fischer annotated his black-and-white photographs with commentary about gay archetypes, such as the jock or the hippie, with an occasional sense of irreverence. The series was published as an artist's book in 1978 and quickly became an influential record of a libertine era before AIDS, the rise of internet dating apps, and tech industry-accelerated gentrification transformed queer life in San Francisco forever. The story of photographer Edward Steichen’s deep connections to the natural world, from how it influenced his artistic practice to his award-winning garden &nbsp; In a 1937 article titled “Millions of Gardeners,” Life magazine published “Mr. Steichen . . . is known among photographers as one of the greatest portraitists clicking a shutter today. He is known among horticulturists as one of the greatest breeders of delphiniums who ever called the gods’ wrath down on a burrowing star-nosed mole.” For over sixty years, the pioneering American photographer Edward Steichen spent most of his spare time—and money—nurturing plants and gardens. It was an activity that sustained and inspired him, and through which he developed ardently held intellectual precepts regarding the interrelationship of creativity, nature, and art. Edward Steichen and the Garden explores Steichen’s artistic practice and his engagement with nature, gardening, and plant breeding, bringing to light the many ways in which the two pursuits were closely allied. The book’s abundant illustrations feature paintings and photographs by Steichen and fellow artists who painted in his garden, including Arthur B. Carles, John Marin, Katharine Knowles, and Marion Beckett. The Wonderful World that Almost Was

Combining photomontage with portraiture and scenes of Hmong American communities, Her mixes the real with the artificial in search of a diasporic identityRooted in the experience of her Hmong community and shaped by family lore passed down by her elders, Pao Houa Her (born 1982) investigates the potential of photography to create nonlinear narratives exploring construction. She brings together formal and vernacular photographic languages manipulated into light boxes, wheat-pasted images and videos. Her's adoptive homes of Minnesota and California become stand-ins for Laos; plastic florals replace living tropics; ersatz and real meld together. The Imaginative Landscape traces Her's ever-deepening exploration into concepts of home and belonging. With essays and an artist interview, this catalog explores Her's work in genres of portraiture, landscape, still life and the vernacular, as she photographs herself and the people and places around her through the tinted lens of diasporic longing. This book was published in association with San José Museum of Art.

Pao Houa Her: The Imaginative Landscape

Fifty years after first publication, one of the most important photobooks of the 20th century returns, offering an intimate glimpse into the daily lives of the Roma community in the 1960s and 1970s. Josef Koudelka's Gypsies remains one of his best-known series, offering a unique survey of the lives of the Roma community across then-Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, France and Spain between 1962 and 1971. Originally published in 1975, five years after Koudelka left Prague following the Soviet Union's invasion, Gypsies is a classic of documentary photography. Now returning in its original, hardback format, this timely new edition is as much a pioneering photoessay as it is a lesson in book making. Carrying only his equipment, a rucksack and sleeping bag, Koudelka journeyed between different village and encampments. His nomadic existence, defined by a sense of displacement, allowed him to gain the trust of the Roma communities he encountered. The resulting series eschews the often-derogatory depictions of the community to instead provide unparalleled insight into their world, shining a light on their traditions, struggles and routines. The Roma in these images were photographed mostly in a state that no longer exists, ruled by a regime that dissolved in 1989. With such few historical depictions, Gypsies is not only a testament to the beauty of photography, but a vital historical document of a community often relegated to the shadows. Arriving at a moment of contemporary unrest and social marginalization, Gypsies is a poignant reminder of the often bleak reality of the disenfranchised, and the power of photography to bear witness.

A major reevaluation of a towering figure in twentieth-century art and the relationship of his sculpture to the crisis of nationalism in modern Europe &nbsp; Figures of Crisis examines the neglected decade of artwork that separates the surrealist experiments of Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti (1901–1966) from his iconic postwar sculptures, revealing the connection between a famous artistic crisis in modern art and the crisis of national identity in modern Europe. In 1935, Giacometti abruptly abandoned his early abstract objects and devoted himself to sculpting portrait busts and minuscule figurines, many no larger than a fingernail. Joanna Fiduccia reimagines this fragmentary and inconspicuous body of work as the pivotal phase in his career, which registered the erosion of interwar democratic values and the searching questions this period posed for the future of modern sculpture. &nbsp; Challenging previous explanations of Giacometti’s return to figuration, Fiduccia argues that his figures gave form to the experience of social breakdown during the rise of fascism through their turbulent surfaces, unsettling generality, dramatic reduction of scale, and compulsive repetition. This fresh account, told through the philosophical, political, and aesthetic thought of Giacometti’s time, shows how ideologies of nationalism generated the problems of selfhood at the heart of modernism.

A collaboration between Jess T. Dugan (photographer of To Survive On This Shore) and curator Charlotte Cotton, Love Pictures centers around conversations about themes informing Dugan’s practice, including gender and identity, family and politics, writing and language, relationships and community, the book as object, and the dynamics of the exhibition space. These initial dialogues then prompted subsequent conversations with others in Dugan’s and Cotton’s respective communities: friends, colleagues, mentors, and subjects of Dugan’s work—including Dawoud Bey, Kelli Connell, Dorothy Moss, and Catherine Opie, among others. Transcriptions of these intimate and in-depth exchanges are woven with the first comprehensive survey of Dugan’s work in book form. Church’s art was defined by place: early trips took him to South America, across the northeastern United States, and to the Arctic; later he visited the Caribbean, Europe, and the Middle East; in his final decades, he spent long sojourns in Mexico.
