The intimate public sphere is fueled by the affects of amity and enmity, identification and rejection, experience and projection in negotiating and deciding the fate of workaday lives. Using the example of law, and specifically of the legal academy in the Anglophone world, this book pieces together the hidden ties and the secret bondings, the erotics and the hostilities that play beneath the surface of public lives. Patiently reconstructing the apparitions of affect and amity as they are glimpsed in marginal moments and off-hours, peripheries and slips, emails and other unintended viscera, the structural role of the laws of friendship, the legal form of compact, concord and contract is reconstructed and expounded.

It analyses, in particular, the role of public health arguments, and the language of 'sexual rights', in legal struggles aimed at decriminalising certain forms of 'risky' sexual conduct. Addressing gay sex, paid sex, and sex carried out by people living with HIV and Aids, the book demonstrates how public health experts are increasingly arguing that the criminal laws used to regulate these areas of behaviour should be abandoned in order to reduce the stigma and discrimination experienced by the 'risky' sexual populations that they target.

Yet, there are major challenges, including the progressive digitalisation of the consumer environment, the need to reconcile sustainability with consumption, and the need for better crisis resilience, alongside more specific concerns such as better enforcement, students as consumers, or subscription contracts. The disruption caused by Brexit demands a comprehensive solution to ensure that UK consumer law and policy remains current and robust rather than becoming moribund. It also presents an opportunity for realigning UK consumer law and policy towards a consumer-centric focus and to develop innovative solutions to contemporary consumer challenges. With original contributions from UK consumer law scholars, the book shows how the UK could develop in response to both major and specific challenges. Topics include a historical perspective on consumer law, consumer law reform, the implications of Brexit, vulnerability, changing paradigms, challenges in the context of financial services and digital consumer law, and enforcement.
