In Germany, 1969, Eugen Fink's Fashion: Seductive Play was published. This first English language edition, updated with an introduction by Stefano Marino and Giovanni Matteucci, makes available Fink’s philosophical investigation into fashion to an English-speaking audience. One of the greatest figures in the “phenomenological movement,” Fink here investigates fashion at various philosophical levels - aesthetic, ethical, social - and in relationship to other forms of human culture, especially contemporary culture. This book delves into the intricate connections between craft, labour, and humanitarianism, examining the historical role of textiles in European and imperial humanitarian efforts. Through a series of case studies, it explores how philanthropic organisations and individuals have engaged with handicrafts to address social and economic challenges. Crucially, the book interrogates the complexities of humanitarian craftwork, balancing narratives of empowerment with critical analyses of control, agency, and commodification. On Paris's broad new boulevards and in its public parks and theaters, women dressed to impress anonymous strangers as well as their friends. They even circulated aspirational photographs of themselves. Looking at a rich array of visual sources - from portraits to modern-life paintings, and from photographs to fashion plates - Justine De Young reveals how women were seen, how they aspired to be seen, and how they navigated public life in Second Empire and Belle Époque Paris. This book considers how fashionable feminine "types" made famous in books, caricatures, and paintings created a visual lexicon and stylistic guide for women. Men and women alike relied on these types - cocotte (mistress), jeune veuve (young widow), amazone (independent equestrienne), demoiselle de magasin (shopgirl), and Parisienne (chic Parisian woman) - to judge the class, character, morality, and worth of strangers.
