Emil Lederer, born in 1882 in Pilsen, ranks among the most influential economists and social scientists of his time. Christian Schneebeck provides the first comprehensive biography of Lederer. He traces Lederer's thought and intellectual development, as well as the formative influences on him, and repeatedly brings the person himself to the fore between work and theory. The author presents Lederer as an innovative, multifaceted, and still contemporary thinker whose scholarly ethos demands publicly advocating the insights he has gained. Lederer's intellectual formation took place around the turn of the century in Vienna, shaped by Marxism and marginal utility theory. Early on, he engaged at the intersection of scholarship and politics. As editorial secretary and later managing editor, he decisively shaped the 
 Archiv für Sozialwissenschaft und Sozialpolitik
 . At the same time, he was active in Heidelberg, where he built influential circles of scholars and students. He repeatedly assumed political and academic responsibilities-serving on wartime economic commissions, socialization committees, and as a visiting professor in Tokyo. He examined the First World War intensively, not only in a now-famous essay on the sociology of war. Lederer also devoted himself early to the new business cycle theory, which made him a widely cited reference thinker in economics during the 1920s. And when Lederer, a converted Jew and outspoken socialist, fled to the United States in 1933 to escape the National Socialists, he examined from exile the characteristics and mechanisms of modern totalitarianism. Lederer died in 1939 in American exile.

Der Mobilisierung von oben durch Slogans imaginärer nationaler Stärke und einem nationalen Blick auf Geschichte entsprechen ein verbreiteter Glaube an halb-charismatische Führer. Die neuen Führungsgruppen setzen auf widersprüchliche politische Slogans, die von negativer Europäisierung, politischen Ressentiments bis zu politischem Familialismus reichen. Sie münden in einem Kult des Autoritären, der auf die Zwischenkriegszeit und ethnische Selbstbilder der Nation in Osteuropa zurückgeht. Im öffentlichen Streit dominiert Politik der Angst, die sich in unterschiedlichen Ausdrucksformen niederschlägt: von Angst vor Fremden bis zu Angst vor Demokratie und liberalen westeuropäischen Eliten, die vor allem in den Reden selbst erklärter politischer Führer anklingt. Eng damit verbunden sind Tendenzen der Gegenmodernisierung, die zur Aushöhlung von Wertorientierungen der liberalen Demokratie und plurale Lebensweisen beitragen.

Doch erstmals in diesem Umfang ausgewertete Bezüge zu Texten rund um Saul und den Untergang des Jerusalemer Königtums legen nahe, dass Jos 10 eigentlich die Kritik am israelitisch-judäischen Königtum inszeniert. Welche Rollen hat der Protagonist Josua in dieser vielschichtigen Erzählung inne? Mithilfe der Rollentheorie E. Goffmans, narratologischer und intertextueller Analysen kommt diese Studie zu dem Ergebnis, dass mit dem prophetisch agierenden Josua und den Königen in Jos 10 eine Konstellation eingeführt wird, die die Darstellung der Geschichte Israels in den Vorderen und Hinteren Propheten bestimmen wird: der Konflikt zwischen Prophetie und Königtum, der sich um Treue und Untreue zur Tora dreht.

The narrative of Joshua 10 describes the war against five Canaanite kings and their execution. However, references to texts about Saul and the fall of Jerusalem's monarchy-analyzed within this scope for the first time-suggest that Joshua 10 actually stages a critique of Israelite-Judean kingship. What roles does Joshua, the protagonist, play in this complex narrative? Using E. Goffman's role theory alongside narrative criticism and intertextual analysis, this study concludes: The portrayal of Joshua in his dominant prophetic role, with the kings as his counterparts in Joshua 10, introduces a constellation that will shape the depiction of Israel's history in the Former and Latter Prophets: the conflict between prophecy and kingship, centered on obedience and disobedience to the Torah.
