This book reassesses classic Marxist theories of finance capital and uneven development in the context of the present intensified process of financialization and the accentuation of combined and accelerating uneven development. In particular, the work of Hilferding and Luxemburg is discussed and re-framed in light of both the contributions of Marx and more recent engagements by David Harvey and Neil Smith. The book explores the case of South Africa in particular in light of the combination of a rapidly financializing yet crisis-ridden South African political economy on the one hand and intensifying social inequality and political conflict on the other.&nbsp;It explores a series of strategies and possibilities that might open up trajectories for change and transformation with particular attention paid to the promises and constraints of the de-growth movement and intersectional class struggle, which will appeal to political economists, researchers, and students alongside those studying South Africa specifically. Patrick Bond is a political economist and professor at the University of Johannesburg, South Africa. He spent more than two decades teaching at the Wits University School of Governance in Johannesburg and the University of KwaZulu-Natal Centre for Civil Society in Durban. During the late 1980s he pursued doctoral studies in economic geography at Johns Hopkins University, while learning politics in the anti-apartheid, labour, student and community movements. In 1994 and 1996, he worked in the Reconstruction and Development Ministry in President Nelson Mandela’s office, drafting the democratic government’s first White Paper and a dozen other major policy documents. He appears more than 100 times a year on South African and international broadcast media, and usually gives more than 50 guest lectures annually.

In 2007, Martin Luther Agwai was deployed to Darfur as Force Commander of UNAMID, which, as the first African Union-UN hybrid mission, was to become the largest peacekeeping operation in the world. Four years earlier, Darfur had imploded, descending into violent conflicts. The international community - in the form of both activists and state actors - felt it could not remain uninvolved lest a genocide on the scale of Rwanda occurred. Despite such lofty intentions, UNAMID proved to be high on promise but low on commitment and delivery. Ultimately, it failed to address the conflicts taking place, much less build a sustainable peace. Agwai provides unique insight into what went wrong in Darfur, and the myriad challenges facing international peacekeeping operations more generally. Crucially, he highlights the lack of multi-level cooperation between the people of Darfur and the intervening parties, and how the absence of a bottom-up approach to peacebuilding works against peace being both achieved and maintained.

Nafeesa T. Nichols analyzes how racialized and gendered spaces are presented in post-apartheid South African literature. Through the examination of four novels, Kopano Matlwa's Coconut (2007), Zukiswa Wanner's The Madams (2006), Niq Mhlongo's After Tears (2007), and Kgebetli Moele's Room 207 (2006), Popular Spaces in Post-Apartheid Literature highlights the interconnections between space, race, gender, and popular culture within the post-apartheid South Africa. Nichols not only explores how post-1994 literature attempts to represent the realities of the post-apartheid condition, but also reveals the innovative and radical contributions that these young authors of the early twenty-first century made within the literary world. This book mediates the dynamics and complexities of space in connection to race and gender, exemplifies the challenge of working with and in violent masculinist textual spaces, and conceptualizes the popular in connection with class, race, and gender struggles. Drawing on an interdisciplinary mix of Black feminist theory, feminist geographical perspectives, and spatial theory, Nichols provides a close reading of each of the selected texts, offering broader insights into the how Black subjects navigate various spaces of oppression. Through these novels, she shows how we are able to imagine the possibilities of liberatory spaces, celebrate local knowledge, creativity, the popular, and, most importantly, the beauty and resistance found in the everyday. In the end, this book contributes to the academic conversations that continue to take place surrounding gender, space, literature, and liberation in South Africa.
