A path for building wealth from the self-made Jamaican-Canadian billionaireWhat are the odds that a boy born into poverty on a small Caribbean island in the 1950s would rise to become one of the world’s few Black billionaires—standing alongside global icons like Michael Jordan, Oprah Winfrey, Jay-Z and Rihanna? Against staggering odds, Michael Lee-Chin did exactly that.In The Way of Wealth, Lee-Chin tells the extraordinary story of how discipline, patience and clear principles—not luck—shaped his ascent. Born in Jamaica, he arrived in Canada in 1970 to study civil engineering, only to pivot years later into financial advising. What followed was a bold bet on himself: he acquired a struggling mutual fund company for $200,000 and transformed it into a financial powerhouse managing more than $15 billion in assets at its peak. Today, his business empire includes financial services, insurance, tourism, agriculture, consumer goods and services, real estate development, energy and targeted radionuclide therapy. At the heart of Lee-Chin’s journey is a simple, disciplined “recipe” he has followed for decades—one that guided every major decision and protected him through volatility, risk and uncertainty. In The Way of Wealth, he distills those hard-won lessons into clear, practical principles anyone can apply, regardless of background or starting point. This is a book about more than money. It’s about conviction over impulse, patience over speculation and building real, meaningful wealth one deliberate decision at a time. No matter where you are today, The Way of Wealth offers a path forward and a reminder that prosperity is not inherited, it can be built.

The Dynamics of Industrial Relations

This open access book argues that the scarcity created by the under-production of vaccines during the Covid-19 years was an entirely predictable, even legitimate consequence of how the international patent system works. Far from being a technical sub-discipline of intellectual property law that simply protects inventions, the international patent system is prismatic of the ways in which we fail to adapt to the challenges of our times: patent rights are intended to incentivise innovation for societal benefit, but in fact facilitate predictable injustice. The patent system ignores the care-constituted nature of our lives, prioritising limiting notions of fairness at the cost of structural harms. The Social Life of Intellectual Property proposes an ethic of just care to temper justice in the global governance of technology. It explores intellectual property as recurring social processes and explains why individual agency and shared responsibility are implicated. On an ecologically imperilled planet, and in a time between pandemics, we must reckon with what we are socialised to believe is legally possible. The ebook editions of this book are available open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence on bloomsburycollections.com.

The Social Life of Intellectual Property

This book offers an in-depth examination of how family background shapes inequalities in children's academic performance and cognitive skill development in China. It further identifies key mediating mechanisms-including living arrangements, family investments, parenting practices, and private tutoring-that help explain how these disparities emerge and persist. While repeated cross-sectional data are valuable for examining macro-level social changes over time, they are inherently limited in their ability to capture individual-level dynamics and identify underlying causal mechanisms. To overcome these limitations, sociologists of China have increasingly turned to the rich, high-quality longitudinal data provided by the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS), launched in 2010, to investigate social and economic inequality across multiple levels and domains. The essays in this volume draw exclusively on CFPS data and collectively examine how families shape children's educational attainment, highlighting a range of intervening pathways. Together, these studies provide a coherent and empirically rigorous understanding of the mechanisms through which family background contributes to educational inequality in contemporary China. This book will be an important resource for researchers and academics of Chinese sociology and demography. The articles were originally published in various issues of Chinese Sociological Review.

#1 NATIONAL BESTSELLER Hank Idsinga, whose grandfather was murdered in the Holocaust, became the country’s leading homicide detective; he shares his insights into tracking down murderers and serial killers over his colourful and decorated thirty-year career. From the age of ten, Hank Idsinga knew he wanted to become a homicide detective, when he learned that his grandfather had been murdered by the Nazis in the Second World War. He prepared to be a police officer his entire youth and soon found himself in ill-fitting suits training for the job. More than competent—smart, incisive, caring, respectful—Idsinga won over his fellow officers and his superiors. He was as capable of tracking down a getaway man as he was informing a mother that her son, lost to crime, would never return home. Idsinga found himself at the center of some of the most notable crimes in recent Toronto history, from the Jane Creba shooting on Boxing Day to shootouts on Yonge Street to helping track down some of the most vicious serial criminals the city has ever seen. But it was in homicide that Hank Idsinga would prove such a vital asset to the Toronto Police Services. Idsinga teamed up with his partners, including future chief of police Mark Saunders, on many murder calls—some one-offs, others more nefarious—taking in the scene with his excellent recall, finding the motive and the method faster and more insightfully than most. Idsinga and his team of seasoned detectives participated in taking down some of the worst Toronto has to offer, perhaps none more so than serial killer Bruce McArthur, who had terrorized the gay village for years. Idsinga became the public face for that investigation, and despite the criticism of the police force’s handling of the murders, Idsinga always appeared strong and compassionate in front of the media’s camera flashes. The High Road breathes life into the true detective genre, with raw, accessible and punchy prose, as honest and compelling as the homicide detective himself. His grandfather would have been proud.

Now in a fully revised and updated new edition, Sport, Exercise and Social Theory is a concise and engaging introduction to the key theories that underpin the study of sport, exercise, and physical activity in society.Structured around C. Wright Mills's concept of the sociological imagination, the capacity to connect personal troubles to public issues and individual biographies to broader social structures, the book shows how theory can be used to debunk many of our traditional assumptions about sport and exercise, and how sport and physical activity can be a powerful window through which to observe and understand wider society. Designed to be used by students who have never studied sociology before, the book provides training in critical thinking and helps students develop intellectual skills that will serve them throughout their professional and personal lives. This new edition includes significantly expanded coverage of feminism and theories related to gender, including new material on the Manosphere, intersectionality, and the trans athletes debate, as well as completely new chapters on nationalism, decolonial perspectives, and ableism and disability. Every chapter includes updated cases and examples, from sportswashing and athlete activism to digital fan cultures, artificial intelligence, and the controversies around sporting mega-events, drawing throughout on the author's own internationally recognised research. Useful pedagogical features include 'Stop and Think' boxes, biographical notes on key theorists, and chapter summaries. This book is an essential companion to any course on sport and society, the sociology of sport, or the contemporary uses of social theory.Additional resources for instructors accompany this book, including classroom discussion topics and exercises, plus exam questions. An Introduction

Sport, Exercise and Social Theory

A challenge to incentivization as a dominant framework for understanding and governing people From corporate management and consumer behavior to public health and climate policy, incentives are widely treated as a neutral and effective way to shape how people act. In this book, Guus Dix shows that incentives are not simple policy nudges; they lull us into a passive understanding of ourselves as being merely responsive to changes others make to our environment. They foster a politics of incremental tweaks to a socially and ecologically destructive economic system that we are expected to accept without question. Dix argues that it is time to challenge the reign of incentives in contemporary science and public life. Dix traces the evolution of the incentive, from the engineering of performance charts and rewards for factory workers to combating gridlock at Britain’s National Health Service. He describes the function of incentives under socialism, theories of adjustment incentives developed at the Harvard Business School to manage employees, and incentivizing whole economies—both socialist and capitalist. He shows that incentivization is a distinct way of wielding power. Incentives have become part of a quasi-universal governing philosophy that keeps us from addressing such major issues as poverty and the climate crisis. Finally, Dix analyzes the limits of incentivization, arguing that being governed by incentives keeps us from considering government policies that have the potential to bring about meaningful and transformative change.

A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius

Materialising the Digital

Where and how we pay is changing dramatically. This timely, innovative book navigates the so-called 'Cambrian explosion' of FinTech companies and more specifically to the emergence of Blockchain technologies and cryptocurrencies through the lens of the case of Ripple, a company in the field of cryptoassets and cross-border payments. Combining STS with human geography and political economy, it navigates the maelstrom of proliferating new and old payment infrastructure, to develop a theoretical and empirical 'infrastructural inversion' of money. Money does not just flow through or behave like an infrastructure, but rather it is an infrastructure, because it is predicated upon the existence of accounting and payment infrastructures of memory for its very existence. Using the concepts of active forms and dispositions from design and architecture, this nuanced book analyses how money's infrastructures act in the world materially, spatially, as objects and subjects of desire and as political and economic machines. If we want new forms of money for new forms of society, we need to think holistically and ecologically about the complex combinations of materiality, space, desire and political economies that money generates and propagates. Tracing the trajectory of a cryptoasset project from an alternative credit system to an interbank, cross-border company, the book moves beyond a Bitcoin-centric view of money. It reveals how alternative and mainstream, networked and sovereign forms of money have long been intertwined.
