He is past president of the Public Choice Society, the Economic Science Association, the Western Economic Association and the Association for Private Enterprise Education. Smith is the coauthor of Economics of Markets (Palgrave Macmillan 2022) and the author of A Life of Experimental Economics (Palgrave Macmillan, 2018). This is his thirteenth book.

Es wird dabei ein historischer Kontext mit den Ansichten klassischer und moderner Ökonomen verknüpft, um ein umfassendes Verständnis der Relevanz und der Folgen des Mindestlohns zu erlangen.In dieser Arbeit wird das Gesetz zur Regelung eines allgemeinen Mindestlohns (MiLoG) betrachtet, das seit dem 1. Januar 2015 in Deutschland gilt und darauf abzielt, Arbeitnehmer vor unangemessen niedrigen Löhnen zu schützen. Unter Bezugnahme auf Adam Smith und die Vorschläge der Europäischen Kommission wird ein angemessener Mindestlohn diskutiert. Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz’ Forderung nach einem Mindestlohn von 12 Euro pro Stunde und dessen Auswirkungen auf die Lohnstruktur sowie die gesellschaftliche Bedeutung werden ebenfalls analysiert. Der Artikel schließt mit einer Betrachtung der historischen Lohnanpassungen und deren Einfluss auf die Beschäftigten in Deutschland.
