It adopts a political economy approach, emphasizing the economic and political conditions under which an international monetary system can come into existence and be maintained over time. This approach highlights how the gradual transition in the international context from commodity money to fiat money has been led by the need for greater elasticity of money supply and smooth adjustments. This transition, however, raises the issue of how to guarantee, over time, the value of a money devoid of intrinsic value. By presenting a historical evolution, the book explains how the existence of an international monetary system based on money without intrinsic value can only occur when a particular balance of power exists at the international level that allows for the production of trust in a fiat money.</div><div> </div><div>The book is a must-read for scholars, researchers, and students in the fields of economic history and international monetary economics, interested in better understanding the evolution of the international monetary system.</div><div>

This book assesses major schools of thought in macroeconomic theory between the Great Depression and the Long Recession, focusing on their analysis of cycles, crises and macro-policy. It explores the road from the dominance of Keynesian ideas to those of New Classical Macroeconomics (NCM) toward the end of the millennium.


The book covers the early influential work of Knut Wicksell; the economic debates of the 1930s, with core contributions from John Maynard Keynes and Friedrich von Hayek; the rise of Keynesianism in the 1950s and its decline since the 1970s; the rise of Monetarism in the 1960s; and NCM¿s subsequent rise to prominence. 


Finally, the book outlines how macroeconomics has evolved from its birth in the 1930s as a theory separate from microeconomics, resulting in a split between macro- and micro-theories, and ended up with a new hegemonic paradigm based on microfoundations. The ensuing policy thinking witnessed a transformation from "active" macro-policy after the Great Depression to a far more "passive" macro-policy during the last quarter of the twentieth century, which may have contributed to missing the signs of the impending Long Recession of 2008.


¿When the 2008 crisis struck, macroeconomists were caught with models that were theoretically elegant yet inappropriate to the needs of the moment. A broader historical perspective may have prevented the jettisoning of Keynesian models that had proved useful in the past and might have done so again. La sphère marchande, désormais mondialisée et digitalisée, entre en violente collision avec les politiques de nombreux pays européens. En effet, le néo-libéralisme américain apporte une incontestable croissance économique et une extraordinaire élévation du niveau de vie. Il exige cependant une mobilité parfaite et une individualisation du travail. En revanche, les États-providences européens furent bâtis, à l'opposé du néo-libéralisme, sur la stabilité et la solidarité du travail. L'euro lui-même est fondé sur ce même postulat, non encore vérifié, de l'amplification de la mobilité du travail. Il pourrait en résulter une conflagration socio-économique dont les premières détonations sont aujourd'hui audibles. Sans une refondation de nos orientations politiques européennes, la rancœur sociale pourrait gravement s'amplifier. Il faut rebâtir l'efficacité stratégique des États européens. S'il existe des périodes politiques, il faut désormais un temps étatique. 2019, l'année de tous les périls politiques.</p>

Idris Abdelkhalek est né en 1989 et est originaire du Valais. Il a obtenu un BLaw de l’Université de Fribourg (2013), un MLaw de l’Université de Berne (2015), son brevet d’avocat genevois en 2018 puis un LL.M. du Collège d’Europe de Bruges (2020). Depuis septembre 2024, il exerce comme avocat en droit commercial, règlementaire et de la concurrence chez Kellerhals Carrard à Lausanne. Cette thèse a été rédigée à la Faculté de droit de l’Université de Fribourg. Divisée en trois parties, elle apprécie dans quelle mesure les droits suisse et européen de la concurrence permettent aux entreprises de s’accorder sur l’atteinte d’objectifs environnementaux. La première partie analyse la place des considérations environnementales dans des notions communes à ces deux droits. La seconde partie traite du droit européen. Elle détermine les divers modes d’intégration de considérations environnementales dans un accord entre entreprises et s’il est opportun de parler d’accord environnemental dans un contexte de droit européen de la concurrence. La troisième partie procède de la même manière pour le droit suisse de la concurrence.
