Fearless Forms, Fearful Concrete
is the story of an architectural soap opera in early 20th-century Brazil. It is about new technologies, cultural debates, and the dawn of modernism in architecture, with at the time novel reinforced concrete as a reference point. The design for Brasília, the country's new capital, marks a culmination of Brazilian anxieties around national identity: camouflaged under whitewashed surfaces of iconic buildings, engineers and architects created the narratives to support their projects.
The protagonists are leading figures of Brazil's architectural modernism, such as Lucio Costa, Joaquim Cardozo, and Oscar Niemeyer, and international artists and intellectuals including Tarsila do Amaral, Monteiro Lobato, Le Corbusier, and Blaise Cendrars. Their complex web of relationships illustrates boundaries of public discourse and the subtle connections between a wide range of topics, from technology to eugenics, from medicine to construction techniques, from prostitution to urban renewal. For decades, 20th-century architecture was uncritically portrayed and praised as an organized, well-intended contribution to order and progress. Today, negative impacts of construction and tensions concealed by public discourse are finally receiving due attention. André Tavares's book contributes to a critical examination of celebrated modernist architects' means and methods without ignoring their achievements and limitations.

Fearless Forms, Fearful Concrete

'A brilliant and challenging book' GORDON BROWNFrom the founder of Britain's leading antifascist organisation, HOPE not hate, this is an urgent call to resist the forces of extremism on the march in Western societies - and how to go about it.If you're shocked and disconcerted by the rise of intolerance and hate, you're not alone.Drawing from 35 years of campaigning and journalism, Nick Lowles shows how anti-immigration, antisemitic and Islamophobic attacks have proliferated in the modern world, and how Britain - with the likes of Tommy Robinson and the growth of Reform UK - has been far from immune from far-right politics. From HOPE not hate's pioneering campaigns against the BNP in east London to the impact of the 'manosphere' and the issues in Netflix's Adolescence; from explorations of the pernicious influence of 'race science' and conspiracy theory to the interplay of deprivation and intolerance in Britain's deindustrialised towns, Lowles entwines his inspirational story with hard-won lessons from decades of activism. His conclusions - which do not shy away from awkward truths for campaigners - suggest practical ways for the far right to be defeated. And he shares powerful examples - from a participant-led youth club in Hull to Syrian refugees connecting with local people over falafel in Bradford - of finding the joy in showing that, hard as it can seem, HOPE can triumph over hate.

How to Defeat the Far Right

Latin American Political Economy

This book delves into the intricate dynamics between economic elites and the political party system in Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay, particularly during their democratization phases in the twentieth century. It introduces a novel framework for comprehending the diverse political strategies adopted by these countries' economic elites during this critical period. The central premise of this book is that the interplay between the cohesion of economic elites and the mobilization of popular sectors at specific historical junctures profoundly influences the nature of elite political involvement. While existing literature has extensively discussed the strategies employed by economic elites to safeguard their interests, this book takes a fresh approach by considering three primary configurations of relationships between economic elites and political parties. It explores cases where economic elites are the primary constituency of parties they have founded, as well as instances where upper-class interests are predominantly defended outside the party system through mechanisms such as the armed forces, pressure groups, and lobbying. Additionally, it examines scenarios where economic elites align themselves with parties boasting a polyclass constituency, exerting limited influence over these parties. This book goes beyond traditional analyses by proposing a theory that elucidates how the interaction between elite cohesion and popular sector mobilization determines the specific forms of elite political involvement. It also charts the historical sequences of this process, emphasizing the evolution of the causal relationship over time.To illustrate this theory, the book employs a comparative historical analysis, scrutinizing the three aforementioned cases to identify factors that account for the different forms of economic elite political participation. It discerns that the level of cohesion among economic elites and the degree of mobilization among popular sectorsare pivotal factors shaping elite-party relationships. Felipe Monestier is Assistant Professor at Departamento de Ciencia Política at Universidad de la República del Uruguay. He received his PhD in Political Science from Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, and his research focuses on the linkages between Latin American economic elites and parties.<div></div>
