Beautifully illustrated with photographs and architectural drawings, this book documents and critically analyses three of Kay Fisker's seminal housing projects in Copehagen: Hornbaekhus (1923); Vestersohus (1935-39); and Dronningegarden (1943-58).

This book focuses on Kay Fisker (1893-1965)’s housing estates in Copenhagen. A leading exponent of Danish Functionalism, Fisker was influenced by Louis Sullivan, and had a strong belief in continuity, putting modernism in perspective and identifying precedents. He built many large-scale housing schemes, mostly for non-profit workers' housing associations, and developed innovative and beautifully considered high-density, low-rise block schemes, which have proven useful and influential to the growing number of contemporary architects who have examined his designs.Beautifully illustrated with photographs and architectural drawings, this book documents and critically analyses three of Kay Fisker's seminal housing projects in Copenhagen: Hornbaekhus (1923); Vestersohus (1935-39); and Dronningegarden (1943-58). These projects reflect how Fisker's work contains valuable lessons for contemporary architects in economy, precision and generosity in housing design. Essays by Martin Søberg, Poul Sverrild and Job Floris set Fisker’s work within their historical, social and architectural context. In the final section, architects from three leading contemporary practices – Clancy Moore, Monadnock and Tony Fretton - discuss how Kay Fisker has influenced their own approaches and work.

This book investigates the relationship between universities, real estate markets, and local economic systems in light of contemporary urban regeneration processes and sustainability challenges. Indeed, university settlements can generate important spillovers and opportunities in their territory, thus becoming decisive development and transformation factors for cities' socio-economic, productive, environmental, and infrastructural components. Furthermore, the increasing student mobility to university towns raises relevant sustainability issues concerning the housing demand stemming from off-site students, which, by strongly impacting the real estate market, can place students' families and low-income residents against important financial barriers. By collecting the papers presented at the SIEV (Italian Society of Appraisal and Valuation) seminar, held in Florence, Italy, in November 2023 within the context of the "Urbanpromo Progetti per il Paese" cultural event, the book delves into understanding and assessing the complexity of the effects generated by investments in university settlements as a fundamental factor for effective urban development policies aimed both at meeting the "right to study" and maximizing impacts from a circular perspective. The proposed reflections, finding their common thread in the use of interpretative models and methodological tools of the appraisal and valuation discipline, are organized into three parts: Part I “Investing in university cities: sustainability and urban regeneration issues”; Part II “University and real estate markets: evaluation issues and models”; Part III “Real estate market and governance in university cities: evidence from case studies”.

Modern Studies in European Law

Nordic Cooperation and the European Union: 50 Years of Legal Integration explores the transformation of Nordic cooperation over the past half-century, shaped by the dynamics of European integration. Initially rooted in informal, intergovernmental dialogue among Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden, Nordic cooperation now finds itself amidst deeper developments taking place in EU law and EEA law. After the Second World War, Europe embraced binding legal commitments vis-à-vis individuals and each other, beginning with human rights under the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), and later economic integration through the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) and then the European Economic Communities (EEC), which is today, the EU, and by extension, the European Economic Area (EEA). For the Nordic states, such developments have created dual loyalties: to each other, in the form of cooperation; but also, to wider Europe, in the form of integration. Given the differentiated form of legal integration with Europe in the Nordic states, and how the EU has transformed well beyond a mere form of economic integration, Nordic cooperation has taken on new meaning. Nordic Cooperation and the European Union: 50 Years of Legal Integration brings together academics, scholars, and judges to understand, elucidate, and explain the interplay of legal regimes, including the complex processes of legal systems and legal cultures adapting to each other over a time span of fifty years. Architecture was fundamental to the realization of welfare state policy in the Nordic countries, translating democratic ideals into concrete spatial materializations. An inclusive notion of “welfare for all” was embraced by a generation of architects, landscape architects, and planners, who labored to give physical form to ideas of equality, collectivity, anddemocracy, producing a vast architectural output in Scandinavia during the postwar years. Today, however, the architectural legacy of this era is contested.  is a fundamental statement on the impact and significance of temporary infrastructures in the city: not only do they ensure the functioning of numerous processes - from construction and dismantling to orientation and protection - but they also shape the cityscape significantly as an overarching structure. Despite their omnipresence, these structures of necessity continue to lead a shadowy existence in both professional discourse and public perception. 
 
 
 This book opens up a new perspective on what is described here for the first time as contemporary vernacular architecture. It shows that it even offers an architectural language from which architects can learn in terms of adaptability, use of local resources, circular economy and conceptual radicalism.
