Husserliana: Edmund Husserl – Gesammelte Werke

Dieser Husserliana-Band enthält im ersten Teil (A) die drei ursprünglichen Teilentwürfe, die Husserl in den Jahren 1912 bis 1915 für das zweite Buch der „Ideen zu einer reinen Phänomenologie und phänomenologischen Philosophie“ („Ideen II“) verfasst hat. Den zweiten Teil (B) bilden Thematische Ausarbeitungen Husserls ab 1908, die Edith Stein zwischen 1916 und 1918 für ihre Zusammenstellung, zum Teil nur auszugsweise, verwendet hat. Diese inhaltlich den „Ideen II“ zugehörigen Texte reichen bis 1924. Ergänzt wird der Band um das „Nachwort“, das Husserl anlässlich der von W. R. Gibson übersetzten und 1931 erschienenen englischen Ausgabe der Ideen I verfasst hat.Die vorliegende Neuedition der „Ideen II“ im Rückgang auf Husserls Originalmanuskripte, die schon lange ein Desiderat der Forschung darstellte, soll an die Stelle der früheren Edition in den Husserliana-Bänden IV und V treten, welche auf jener von Edith Stein durchgeführten Ausarbeitung bzw. auf deren 1924/25 von Ludwig Landgrebe angefertigtem Typoskript beruht. Die Neuedition bietet nun erstmals eine umfassende und auf den Originalmanuskripten beruhende Textgrundlage für die historische und systematische Forschung zu den „Ideen II“.

Im Jahr 1950 nahm Theodor W. Adorno, gerade aus der Emigration zurückgekehrt, erstmals an den legendären Internationalen Ferienkursen für Neue Musik in Darmstadt teil. Unter seinen Hörern war der damals achtzehnjährige Heinz-Klaus Metzger. Diese Begegnung war der Beginn einer Freundschaft, die erst mit dem Tod Adornos endete und anfangs ganz im Zeichen von Adornos Philosophie der neuen Musik stand - dem Paukenschlag in der Musikwissenschaft Nachkriegsdeutschlands. Der Briefwechsel selbst kam jedoch erst in Gang, als Metzger in Paris bei dem Schönberg-Schüler Max Deutsch Komposition studierte - und entzündete sich vollends an Adornos Essay Das Altern der neuen Musik, der als heftige Attacke auf die Nachkriegsavantgarde aufgenommen und alsbald ebenso heftig von Metzger öffentlich kritisiert wurde. Weitere Themen sind u.a. der Aufstieg und Niedergang der seriellen Musik und der »Komet« John Cage, dessen Kompositionen die internationale Musikszene polarisierten. Die Korrespondenz, die bis ins Jahr 1967 reicht, belegt nicht nur Adornos vitale Anteilnahme an den musikalischen Entwicklungen der 50er und 60er Jahre, sondern läßt auch ein Stück Musikgeschichte lebendig werden, das zu den spannendsten des vergangenen Jahrhunderts gehört.

This textbook presents the phenomenological method(s) not only theoretically, but also in their current intra- and interdisciplinary applications. “Back to the things themselves as they are given in experience” – this is the motto of phenomenology starting from Edmund Husserl. For this we have to question the self-evident and bracket all presuppositions. But how can we do this? How do we arrive at an unprejudiced description? How can the general be determined in the concrete? And how can we inquire into the conditions of experience? This will be explained with reference to historical texts and illustrated using contemporary examples. The present text is an updated and re-worked version of “Phänomenologie. Eine Einführung” (Berlin: Springer-Verlag, J.B. Metzler 2022). The translation was done with the help of artificial intelligence. A subsequent manual revision was done primarily in terms of content.

Natasha Anderson earned her doctoral degree in British Studies with a grade of “summa cum laude”, part of a German Research Foundation project, and her M.A. in American Studies at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz, Germany, where she now studies Digital Humanities. She participated in the Institute for World Literature at Harvard University, published articles in English Studies and Journal of European Periodical Studies, and wrote book reviews in European Journal of American Studies.

Theory and History in the Human and Social Sciences

The 19th century is a decisive time for the development of contemporary psychology. The assumption of a mechanical worldview, the secularization of society, the emergence of the modern urban metropolis, and the rise of Darwinian teleology of nature are tendencies that, though characteristic of the 20th century, have their origins in the 19th century. During this century, natural sciences expanded outside their traditional limits, colonized the human and moral sciences, and shaped the modern social sciences. During this long transformation, deep and intense debates arose on free will, the moral dimension of human action, and the possibility of a science of the soul. Unlike the standard reading about the history of psychology, according to which the discipline emerged univocally from physiology in the second half of the 19th century, the attentive consideration of this century shows a multifariouslandscape.This book aims to identify the hidden romantic, idealist, vitalist, and hermeneutical roots of psychology, showing that Wundt’s experimental psychology was only the best promoted final phase of a long debate, many aspects of which remain still today open and undecided. To achieve this goal, we gather key figures of the 19th century whose contributions to the development of modern psychology have been broadly forgotten and are nowadays altogether ignored. Each chapter approaches one forgotten psychologist’s life and work and is written by a prominent scholar specialized in the respective author. By recovering the germinal and dynamic insights of key authors at the dawn of modern psychology and situating them in cultural history, we discover a colorful view of the discipline and a better understanding of the varieties and limitations of contemporary psychology.
