Internationalisierung in der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe. Postmobile Perspektiven

The book offers a comprehensive and innovative examination of how international law and institutions navigate the complexities of modern conflicts and crises. It is structured around four key themes which provide an integrated approach to understanding the legal and institutional responses to today’s global challenges. The first theme, Public International Law in Conflicts and Crisis, critically explores the failures and gaps in current legal frameworks, such as the ineffectiveness of jus ad bellum and jus in bello in the Russia-Ukraine war and the limitations of international organizations, revealing the inadequacies of existing international regulations. The second theme, Migration, Refugee Protection, and Human Rights in Contemporary Crises analyzes how global crises, including pandemics, exacerbate existing inequalities and disrupt traditional protection frameworks. It offers a critical analysis of the legal status of settlers, the protection challenges for unaccompanied refugee children, and the broader implications of global crises on human rights. Geopolitical Dynamics and Institutional Responses in a Changing World forms the third theme, analyzing how shifting power structures and geopolitical tensions reshape international law and institutional responses. This section provides insights into regional conflicts, such as those in Southeast Asia and the Middle East, examining how global governance struggles to adapt to evolving challenges. The final theme, Evolving Socioeconomic Landscapes of Power Structures Amid Crisis, focuses on how crises influence corporate responsibility, economic resilience, and international trade. Introducing innovative legal perspectives like Egocentric Legal Formalism (ELF), it explains the impact of crises on global power asymmetries. This book is essential for policymakers, legal professionals, international relations scholars, and anyone interested in understanding the multifaceted legal and institutional responses to conflicts and crises in the 21st century. Its interdisciplinary approach, combining legal theory with practical analysis, offers valuable insights into navigating today’s global challenges and shaping more effective responses for the future.

International Laws and Regulations Through Conflicts and Crisis in the 21st Century

Giving birth is everyone's business. In this book, midwife and bestselling author Leah Hazard takes us from luxurious birthing suites to maximum-security prisons, from border-town clinics to refugee camps, freebirthing communities to wards dominated by algorithms, showing how childbirth provides a startling lens onto the biggest issues of our time. With clarity and curiosity, Hazard explores how inequality, migration, climate change and political currents are shaping this universal yet intimate human experience, revealing the competing forces that are battling to technologize, moralize, commoditize and dominate the birth space in ways that have already transformed our bodies and our world. In exposing the fragility of modern industrialized maternity care Birth Wars issues a warning and a rallying cry: highlighting the transformative - or destructive - power of this essential act, not only for the person giving birth, but also for the child who bears the lifelong effects of that day, and for society as a whole.

This book brings together scholars from diverse geographical settings to share their conceptual and empirical research findings on rural areas, rural poverty, rural resource capitalization and responsible tourism development. The book comprises short case studies, and pictorial and numerical illustrations of significant rural sociocultural, and environmental and economic phenomena related to rural poverty and sustainable capitalization of rural resources. The book highlights the interpretation of socially constructed world rural landscapes, rural poverty, and the performance of tourism in relation to rural sustainability enabling readers to gain an elaborative understanding of the unique characteristics and features of rural landscapes, the impact of rural poverty and poverty alleviation programs on rural areas, the status of capitalization of rural resources and the role of tourism on sustainable rural development.

Perspectives on Global Affairs

With more than 180 million migrants worldwide, roughly 2.3 percent of the global population, migration is a global phenomenon, characterized by cross-border movements that are strikingly varied. This book discusses the current state of migration as a question of governance rather than crisis, examining contemporary migration movements within the legal, political, and economic structures that shape who may move, and why. The book focuses on Latin America, a region shaped by long histories of mobility, and the immigration policy frameworks of the United States, the European Union, and Latin America and the Caribbeans, tracing how different institutional architectures face similar migratory pressures but obtain markedly different outcomes. Ultimately, the book argues that migration functions as a governance barometer, by introducing the concept of policy elasticity, and exploring the limitations of existing “one-size-fits-all” approaches.

Palgrave Studies in Race, Ethnicity, Indigeneity and Criminal Justice

The edited collection gathers contributions from across the world and engages in constructive debate about fundamental issues regarding Indigenous peoples in connection with issues of crime and harm. It provides the most diverse and global coverage of this topic across five continents. Existing explorations of Indigenous peoples in relation to issues of crime and harm have proven valuable in challenging, decentring, and renewing criminology. Yet, this research area remains at the margins of criminology, and many fundamental questions—such as the meaning of ‘being Indigenous’—await deeper exploration. Key themes explored by the book include: the meaning of Indigeneity; Indigenous epistemologies, Indigenous cosmologies, and their implications for the study of crime; the meaning of ‘crime’ for Indigenous peoples; causes, consequences, and types of crimes and harms against Indigenous Peoples; Indigenous peoples and gender; Indigenous systems of justice; and Interactions between Indigenous Peoples and state criminal justice systems. This collection does not seek consensus but reflects diversity and depth. It offers an introduction to Indigenous criminology and fundamental concepts, as well as a series of case studies and more intricate theorisation.David R. Goyes
is a researcher at the University of Oslo, Norway, with a PhD in criminology. He has contributed extensively to the study of North-South global relations, environmental conflicts, and Indigenous issues. Goyes is editor-in-chief of the
International Journal for Crime, Justice and Social Democracy
and a member of several editorial boards.
Angie Cuchimba
is a researcher at the Universidad Antonio Nariño, Colombia. Cuchimba holds a law degree from the same university. She is an Indigenous leader in the Nasa Community and has represented her People worldwide in diverse meetings. Together with Goyes, Cuchimba has published articles about Indigenous rights and justice in some of the best journals in the world.

“Masterfully, McKenzie provides a conceptual toolkit for both researchers and local communities on how to resist wealth chain urbanism.”

This book traces the hidden architecture of urban dispossession. From the ghost neighbourhoods of Kensington and Chelsea to the offshore-controlled student housing in Sheffield, it reveals how cities are being retooled not as homes for their residents, but as nodes in a global network of value extraction.Wealth chain urbanism is the name for this system: six interlocking mechanisms that convert communities into commodities. McKenzie introduces the concept of "Digital Plantation", showing how algorithmic systems and surveillance infrastructure reproduce the colonial logics of extraction in the twenty-first-century city. But this book also documents the counter-infrastructure being built by tenant unions, community land trusts, and environmental justice campaigners who refuse to be erased. It issues a radical challenge: reform is a trap. The book envisions a strategy of dual power—tactical fights for survival alongside the construction of autonomous alternatives beyond capital's reach. Essential reading for scholars, activists, policymakers, and anyone who wants to understand (and change) the future of our cities. Rex McKenzie

This book traces the hidden architecture of urban dispossession. From the ghost neighbourhoods of Kensington and Chelsea to the archipelagos of offshore-controlled student housing in Sheffield, he reveals how cities are being retooled not as homes for their residents, but as nodes in a global network of value extraction.Wealth chain urbanism is the name for this system: six interlocking mechanisms (offshore opacity, institutional portfolio strategies, algorithmic platforms, securitisation, state facilitation, and racial capitalism) that convert communities into commodities. McKenzie introduces the concept of the "Digital Plantation", showing how algorithmic systems and surveillance infrastructure reproduce the colonial logics of extraction in the heart of the twenty-first-century city. But this is also a book about resistance. It documents the counter-infrastructure being built by tenant unions, community land trusts, and environmental justice campaigners who refuse to be erased. It issues a radical challenge: reform is a trap. This book offers the first comprehensive English-language exploration of juvenicide, a concept that examines the killing of young people as a form of structural violence rather than ordinary homicide. While the term has circulated widely in Latin American scholarship, this volume brings together leading voices to consolidate its theoretical foundations and demonstrate its relevance across diverse contexts. The book is organized into four sections that collectively map the field of juvenicide studies. The first section establishes the conceptual framework and situates juvenicide within contemporary crises affecting youth. The second examines intersectional dimensions, including age, gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity, to show how these factors shape vulnerability to lethal violence. The third section analyzes institutional structures—state power, neoliberal policies, education systems, and criminal apparatus—that enable and normalize juvenicide. The final section turns to resistance, documenting collective struggles that challenge the disposability of young lives in countries such as El Salvador, Argentina, and Colombia.By framing juvenicide as a “total social fact,” the volume illuminates the political, structural, and symbolic forces that render certain youth populations expendable under neoliberal capitalism. Combining empirical research with conceptual innovation, this book provides critical insights for scholars of youth and violence, policymakers, and practitioners. It also serves as a valuable resource for courses on inequality, violence, and social justice in Latin America and beyond.

Intersectional Perspectives and Institutional Dynamics in Latin America

Juvenicide and the Politics of Youth Killings

How apprenticeship shaped the English economy Apprenticeship dominated training and skill formation in early modern Europe. Years spent learning from a skilled master were a nearly universal experience for young workers in crafts and trade. In England, when apprenticeship reached its peak, as many as a third of all teenage males would serve and learn as apprentices. In The Market for Skill, Patrick Wallis shows how apprenticeship helped reshape the English economy. Some historians see apprenticeship as a key ingredient in the industrial revolution; others agree with Adam Smith in seeing it as wasteful and conservative. Wallis shows that neither of these perspectives is entirely accurate. He offers a new account of apprenticeship and the market for skill in England, analyzing the records of hundreds of thousands of individual apprentices to tell the story of how apprenticeship worked and how it contributed to the transformation of England. Wallis details the activities of apprentices and masters, the strategies of ambitious parents, the interventions of guilds and the decisions of town officials. He shows how the system of early modern apprenticeship contributed to the growth of cities, the movement of workers from farms to manufacturing and the spread of new technologies and productive knowledge. In this groundbreaking study, Wallis argues that apprenticeship succeeded precisely because it was a flexible institution which allowed apprentices to change their minds and exit contracts early. Apprenticeship provided a vital channel for training that families could trust and that was accessible to most young people, whatever their background.
