This book investigates the widespread and persistent human rights violations against Dalits in India, with a focus on the erstwhile central Bihar from 1977 to the present day. Drawing on historical data, field interviews, judicial records, and human rights reports, the book presents a searing account of caste carnages, institutional failures, and the lived realities of marginalization and resistance. Key themes include the role of radical groups and civil society in raising awareness, the complicity and neglect of state institutions, and the urgent need for constitutional accountability and social reform. This book analyses the ways in which Article 9 of the Aarhus Convention enables environmental access to justice in the Balkans, a region at the epicentre of extreme climate change events. Adopting a law-in-context approach, the chapters explore national cultures and driving forces shaping the implementation of Aarhus standards in Albania, Croatia, North Macedonia, Romania, Slovenia and Serbia, paving the way for their comparative assessment. The book combines EU law and the case law of the European Court of Human Rights with the bottom-up Europeanisation brought about by rising environmental protests and the activism of civil society organisations in the region. In doing so, it explores the extent to which these Balkan countries comply with requirements stemming from Article 9 of the Aarhus Convention, and whether, despite national differences, it is possible to talk about Europeanisation of access to justice in environmental matters. The interdisciplinary approach and geographical scope of the book make it an important read for academics and practitioners, as well as for the civil society sector and policy makers grappling with the normative and practical challenges around environmental access to justice - both in and beyond Europe.

This book is the first study to consider findings from sociology, legal anthropology, ethnology, legal pluralism, comparative law and theology in order to gain a better understanding of the diverse cultures of global Catholicism and the cross-cultural challenges arising from Roman Catholic canon law within the local churches. The author, renowned for her work at the intersection of socio-legal studies and canon law, examines the latter as a distinctive example of a European religious legal system that cuts across the myriad legal cultures of the local churches. In light of findings on legal transfer and legal colonialism, and by examining canon law within the emerging field of social and cultural studies approaches to law, her book sheds light on how canon law is imposed upon and received by the local churches around the world. It analyses the challenges and problems arising from the law’s transcultural claims within these churches. Based on these observations, the study discusses the critical stance of canon law within contemporary Catholicism and the current debates on a synodal reform of the church and its law.&nbsp; The book adopts different perspectives: As a sociological study, it describes the contemporary Eurocentrism of global canon law and the conflicts arising from it. As a theological study, it presents ecclesiological reasons for challenging the hegemony of global legislation. Die Beiträge wurden von Menschen mit den unterschiedlichsten beruflichen, (mutter-)sprachlichen und kulturellen Hintergründen verfasst. Offen und authentisch legen sie die Herausforderungen und Erfahrungen aus dem ostbelgischen Speak Up! Lab dar und liefern neue Denkanstöße. Neben Berichten und Reflexionsbeiträgen zu den bisherigen Tagungen versammelt dieser Band auch die Ergebnisse der tagungsübergreifenden Arbeitsgruppen sowie Kurzinterviews mit Teilnehmenden der Speak Up! Tagungen, die ihre Arbeit vorstellen.
