Das Handbuch denkt Medientheorien konsequent von den gegenwärtigen und zukünftigen Transformationen von Kultur, Technologie und Gesellschaft her. Die Struktur und die Begriffe des Handbuchs greife globale Trends und Probleme des Medienwandels auf, die auf das Engste mit den technologischen Entwicklungen und Veränderungen von Kultur und Gesellschaft im Ganzen verknüpft sind. 
Angesichts dieser Komplexität und der zentralen Rolle, die Medien in gesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozessen einnehmen, existieren Medientheorien nur im Plural und stehen vor der Herausforderung ihrer beständigen Neuerfindung. Das ›Handbuch Medientheorien des 21. Jahrhunderts‹ schreibt daher nicht bloß einen bestehenden Kanon fest. Medientheorie wird vielmehr als eine kreative Praxis verstanden, die den zeitgenössischen sowie nahzukünftigen Bedingungen und Herausforderungen des Medienwandels mit neuen Begriffen und Theoremen begegnet.Der Gebrauchswert des Handbuchs besteht darin, zentrale Problemlagen der (post-)digitalen Gegenwart und Zukunft zu adressieren. Renommierte Autor:innen aus Medienwissenschaft und angrenzenden Disziplinen zeigen auf, inwiefern Medientheorien die Analyse einer hochtechnisierten, globalen Medienkultur ermöglichen, welche eng mit den mannigfaltigen Prozessen kultureller Differenzierung und Identitätsbildung verschränkt ist.Für Forscher:innen wie für Studierende, die an aktuellen Problemlagen interessiert sind, versammelt das Handbuch maßgebliche Themen, Begriffe und Konzepte, die den ›state of the art‹ zeitgenössischer medientheoretischer Diskurse bilden und als ›cutting edge‹-Beiträge Pfade für zukünftige Debatten vorzeichnen. Examining French ideological novels, Louise Lyle charts the development of French hostility towards social Darwinism during the fin de siècle. Lyle argues that the antagonism of a wide range of authors from diverse literary schools was a consequence of and a response to historically specific insecurities relative to the state of the French nation. Grounded in the cultural history of biology, Lyle's study is an important contribution to literature and the history of science.

Examining French ideological novels, Louise Lyle charts the development and motivation of French hostility towards social Darwinism during the fin de siècle. Lyle argues that the antagonism of authors from diverse literary schools was a consequence of and a response to historically specific insecurities relative to the state of the French nation. She analyzes works by Emile Zola, foremost among the literary naturalists and an exponent of 'scientific republicanism'; right-wing reactionaries Maurice Barrès and Paul Bourget; anarchist sympathiser Octave Mirbeau; pro-natalists and commentators on women's issues, Colette Yver and Marcel Prévost; and anti-Anglo-Saxonists, including Gustave Le Rouge, le Capitaine Danrit, and J.-H. Rosny. Lyle also investigates the legacy of the incorporation of social Darwinism by these authors in the work of post-World War II writers Vercors and Romain Gary and in contemporary fiction by Michel Houellebecq and Maurice Dantec. Grounded in the cultural history of biology, particularly in France, Lyle's study is an important contribution to literature and the history of science.

Patipolitics looks at what it means to enjoy the body under technocapitalism, arguing that we need a new paradigm to talk about sexual enjoyment and suffering. It is not just biological life (biopolitics), nor even political death (necropolitics) that has power, but also regimes of enjoyment. In simple terms the paradoxical, ambivalent and traumatic realm of the sexual: a deadly enjoyment that demands satisfaction yet cannot be sated. This is Patipolitics, from the Latin patior- to suffer, which for psychoanalysis is also to enjoy.

The body is governed by a dizzying array of institutions: the family, social media, religion and the culture industries. These sites provide contexts for enjoying the body such as: self-image, object choice, identification, erogenous zones, taboos, codes of sexual morality, inhibitions, violence, and bodily abjection. But it is the ways in which these modalities are harnessed by apparatuses of power which makes them patipolitical.

Patipolitics examines how the body is instrumentalised, weaponised and fantasized through science, technology and capitalism. After highlighting the destructive and oppressive elements of patipolitics, the book elucidates the positive and generative dimensions to the patipolitical. The female body and its place in the masculine imaginary obscures a genuine enigma about the sexual body and power. Ultimately if patipolitics is to be affirmative as opposed to destructive we must ask what alternative future it can help us to imagine?

Maura Ives's publishing history of "Goblin Market" maps its appearance in collected editions and in standalone volumes in Britain and the United States. Topics include the poem's composition, production, and marketing; contemporary reception; fine press, miniature, and mass market editions, including versions for children; and musical settings and adaptations. The volume concludes with an annotated list of archival sources and published versions of "Goblin Market," followed by an extensive bibliography.

As the lead poem in Christina Rossetti's first collection, Goblin Market and Other Poems, "Goblin Market" stands both historically and literally as the gateway to Rossetti's works. Despite its importance in the Rossetti canon, the publishing history of Rossetti's famous poem remains incomplete. Maura Ives offers the first extended treatment of this neglected topic, mapping "Goblin Market"'s publication history in collected editions and in standalone volumes in Britain and the United States. Topics covered include the poem's composition, production, and marketing; contemporary reception; fine press, miniature, and mass market editions, including versions for children; and musical settings and adaptations. The volume concludes with an annotated list of archival sources and published versions of "Goblin Market," followed by an extensive bibliography.  Memorable not only for its vivid imagery and its disconcerting combination of sensuality and Christian symbolism, the absorption of "Goblin Market" into popular culture is readily evident to this day, with Rossetti's poem serving as the title for a folk-rock duo, restaurants in Manhattan and Florida, and a number of books by other authors. Ives's publishing history of "Goblin Market" sheds light on the longstanding critical and commercial appeal of this fascinating Victorian poem and on book publishing from the Victorian period to the present.

In this volume, Taine Duncan offers a critique of Jürgen Habermas inspired by ethical and political feminist philosophy. She argues for a critical, theoretically grounded relational ethics and maintains that modern critical theory must be sensitive to social, political, and embodied difference. The utopian spirit of normative ethics, she suggests, can only be fairly achieved by fluidly working together for shared interests. By synthesizing feminist hopes for utopian ideals with the concept of solidarity that emerges from a relational ethics, this book puts forth a feminist project of cosmopolitanism as foundational for an ethical society.
