Una aproximación global

A beautifully illustrated survey of the world’s most inspiring kitchen gardens, from potagers and historic estates to rooftop urban farms

This stunning volume celebrates the rich history of kitchen gardens through more than 50 of the world’s finest examples, each explored in depth through gorgeous imagery, vivid storytelling, and insightful texts highlighting garden and growing details.

Organized geographically, the book reveals how climate, culture, and history inform productive gardens around the world. Readers will discover European walled gardens flush with flowers and edibles; a forward-thinking, rooftop urban farm in Singapore; and an abundant coastal garden in Patagonia that proves green things can grow in the harshest of places. Iconic locations, such as Château de Villandry and Bunny Mellon’s Oak Spring Garden, appear alongside community spaces, such as Alice Waters’ Edible Schoolyard in California, as well as stunning contemporary gardens by Patrice Taravella (Babylonstoren, South Africa), Arne Maynard (Gordon Castle, Scotland), Charles Stick (Sleepy Cat Farm, USA), and other renowned designers.

Gardeners of all abilities will discover the story behind each garden and its creation. Large images and informative texts offer the reader both inspiration and useful advice for what to grow in spaces of all shapes and sizes. Authored by Dr. Toby Musgrave, a garden historian and a grower at the iconic De Runde Haver community gardens in Nærum, Denmark, The Kitchen Garden includes extensive captions about each of the featured gardens, as well as an illustrated introduction charting the history of kitchen gardens and six topic essays on key subjects, including protected cropping, organic techniques, and training fruit.

'Rare and riveting' LYSE DOUCET 'Blistering . . . a genuinely remarkable achievement' THE TIMES 'Compulsively readable . . . unputdownable' JON LEE ANDERSON 'Dramatic, personal and often heartbreaking' GUARDIAN 'Rarely has a book been so timely . . . Essential reading' LINDSEY HILSUM 'One of the most perceptive books on modern Iran in years' NEW YORK TIMES The moving, riveting and immersive story of six Iranians who, together, lived the entire arc of modern Iranian history: from the promise of the 1979 revolution to its betrayal by the Islamic mafia state and a people's undying spirit of resistance.Fuelled by Iranians' dreams of social justice and political freedom, the 1979 revolution swept aside the shah's ailing, repressive monarchy. But in its place the revolution's leader Ayatollah Khomeini and his acolytes built a system that served his narrow Islamic fundamentalist faction and worsened every failing and brutality that had existed under the shah. In this landmark new book, award-winning journalists Bozorgmehr Sharafedin and Yeganeh Torbati tell the entwined stories of six Iranians, providing a powerful new lens on Iran's recent history in all its bitter twists and stubborn hope:¿ Mehdi Karroubi: a devotee of Khomeini, he rose to the heights of power on the wave of the revolution, before being cast out of its inner circle.¿ Hila Sedighi: a young activist, who gave voice through her poetry to her peers' hopes during the reform years and ultimately immortalised their shattered dreams.¿ Amir Moghadam: an ambitious government bureaucrat, who witnessed corruption and graft on a scale that impelled him to take enormous risks to expose the truth.¿ Said Rahmani: a successful global tech entrepreneur who returned to Iran to spark a start-up boom in his native country, and encountered a ruthless security state that wanted his company for itself.¿ Rozhin Yousefzadeh and Kosar Eftekhari: both born in the 1990s, they escaped their gendered destinies by leaving their hometowns for Tehran, where they joined a mass movement that confronted a ferocious state apparatus: the Woman Life Freedom protests. Each paid an enormous price.Through vivid and original reporting, Stolen Revolution offers a compulsively readable new story of Iran, centring ordinary Iranians' lives, whilst providing a visceral understanding of how life is actually lived under a modern authoritarian state. This is a harrowing story of power, corruption and greed - and those brave individuals who fought back.'The definitive inside story of how the ideals behind Iran's revolution were subverted and crushed - and of the brave Iranians who still keep those dreams alive' CATHERINE BELTON, author of PUTIN'S PEOPLE'Profoundly affecting . . . Betrayal and Hope in Modern Iran

Stolen Revolution

For decades, the US assumed ideas would naturally flow from research into commercialization. That assumption no longer holds. As Anne Marie Knott shows, the US innovation system is no longer fit for purpose in an age of great-power rivalry. Since 1980, American R&D productivity has fallen dramatically, while China has become far better at turning R&D into growth. Why? Because the two countries operate from fundamentally different models of innovation. The United States follows a 'river' logic: produce frontier science and trust the market to carry discoveries downstream. China follows a 'lake' logic: absorb, develop, diffuse, and capture value. Drawing on new empirical research and a widely applicable measure of R&D productivity, Knott challenges seven myths shaping US innovation policy and offers a reform agenda built less on new spending than on using existing tools far more effectively. The result is a provocative account of innovation, growth, and national power.

Bringing a Knife to a Gunfight

The US Innovation War with China

This wide-ranging intellectual and media history traces China's emergence as a modern state in which boundaries blur between art and design, education and psychological conditioning. Tracking the parallel development of set design and social engineering from the 1920s to the 1960s, Background Matters examines the concept of huanjing (environment), a neologism introduced at the turn of the twentieth century that evoked heated intellectual debates and inspired frenzied aesthetic experimentation. Weihong Bao shows how efforts to reshape the mind consolidated the idea and art of environment by advancing a new theoretical notion of set design: both as aesthetic organization across film, theater, radio, and television and as social experimentation in worldmaking across geopolitical and transnational contexts. Inventive and breathtaking in scope, this book radically rethinks environment not as an external object but as the nexus of mind, medium, and society.

THEY CALLED US WITCH

How should the Arctic be viewed in the 21st century? In this book, a leading commentator assesses the competing players for the Arctic, looking at broad questions of governance and security. The author challenges the view that the Arctic is a passive space which is the focus of competitive advances from superpowers, arguing that it is more correctly understood as a dynamic pluriverse. Drawing on international law, international relations and diplomacy, this is an important re-assessment of the Arctic and its position in geo-politics.

Drawing on broader legal-political discourses within the party-state and institutionalised academia, this book shines a light on one of the most controversial legal principles in Chinese criminal justice: the presumption of innocence. It argues the reasons why there is no presumption of innocence in China, tracing the curve, or evolution, of academic discourse about presumption of innocence against the backdrop of changing politics, or varying emphases on national conditions, from Mao Zedong to Xi Jinping. The book deepens our understanding of the trajectory of criminal justice reforms in the party-state and shows how the more open and liberal phases of the reform era opened up some space for pluralist views and constructive criticism. In comparison, the second wave of autocratisation of the system influenced the conception of the criminal and paved the way for an illiberal turn.

Presumption of Innocence Under China's 'National Conditions'

Globalisation promised a world of open markets, shared prosperity and peace through trade. Instead, it has delivered a new battle for wealth and power. In All the Money in the World, The Times Economics Editor Mehreen Khan argues that mercantilism - the centuries-old belief that economic strength is the foundation of national power - is back. Trade is no longer just about efficiency or cheap goods. It is about dominance. It is about who makes the world's products, controls its resources, owns its technology, and sets the terms for everyone else. From China's record trade surpluses to Donald Trump's tariffs, from Europe's industrial anxiety to the race for chips, batteries and critical minerals, economics has become a frontline of great power conflict. Governments are no longer simply competing in the global market; they are trying to rig it in their favour. With deep insight, authority and historical sweep, Khan reveals how the world has moved from the triumph of free trade to the return of protectionism, economic coercion and geopolitical rivalry. She shows why trade imbalances matter, how dependency becomes a weapon and why the comforting certainties of the neoliberal age are breaking down.Urgent and eye-opening, All the Money in the World is an essential guide to the new era of economic warfare.

The New Battle for Global Wealth and Power

All the Money in the World

How the social organization of Europe and China shaped their divergent economic and political trajectories over the past millennium In the eleventh century, when Europe was still backward and poor, China was a rich and sophisticated civilization. Yet Europe became the birthplace of democracy and the Industrial Revolution, driving the Great Enrichment, while China stagnated until the end of the twentieth century and was always ruled by autocracies. Two Paths to Prosperity traces the emergence of two very different social organizations in premodern China and Europe--the clan and the corporation--showing how they were key factors in the economic and political divergence of these two great civilizations. In this landmark book, three leading economists offer a bold new account of why Europe and China evolved along such different trajectories. In the early Middle Ages, public goods like risk sharing, religious worship, education, and conflict resolution were provided by nonstate organizations in both societies. China increasingly relied on kin-based cooperation within clans, while weaker kinship ties in Europe gave rise to corporations such as guilds, universities, and self-governing towns. Despite performing similar functions, clans and corporations were built on very different principles--with lasting consequences until today. Providing a novel answer to a fundamental question in economic and political history, Two Paths to Prosperity shows how extended kinship in Chinese society facilitated the consolidation of autocracy and hindered innovation and economic development, and how corporations in Europe influenced emerging state institutions and set the stage for the Industrial Revolution.
