Since the 2003 UNESCO Convention, cultural heritage policies have promoted diversity and grassroots participation. Deborah Sielert explores how these global discourses do and do not unfold in three small towns in northern Germany, where Portuguese, Dutch, and East Frisian minorities have shaped the cultural sphere since the 1990s - despite the absence of official heritage frameworks. Through a comparative multi-sited study, the research traces how local actors engage with symbolic boundary-making in ethnicised festivals and associations, and how global heritage regimes inform these endeavours. This study offers a fresh sociological lens on the interplay between local sensemaking and the worldmaking power of heritage discourse.

 Elisa Panzera 
 is Assistant Professor of Regional and Urban Economics at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. Her main research interests are in the field of economics of culture, economics of innovation and regional studies. She currently collaborates in EU funded projects as well as teaching activities for Urban and Regional Economics courses.

However, tourism-led regeneration may also create tensions when upgrades or visitor priorities overshadow resident needs. A striking collection of 90 photographs depicting the rugged grandeur of the Northwest Coast’s Great Bear Rainforest. Spirit of the Great Bear&nbsp;is an immersive journey through the vast wilderness habitat of the spirit bear, the rare white-furred variant of Kermode bears that has long featured in First Nations oral traditions. While much of Great Bear Rainforest is protected—it is the largest intact coastal temperate rainforest on Earth—today there are as few as 100 of the bears remaining, making it one of the world's rarest animals. Wildlife photographer and conservationist Jack Plant has spent the last decade exploring the rainforest in search of spirit bears and documenting the natural beauty of this coastal habitat, relying heavily on the guidance and traditional knowledge generously shared by the First Nations communities who have protected the region for thousands of years. Plant was adopted by Hereditary Chief Charlie Mason of Kitasoo/Xai’xais First Nation in the community of Klemtu.
