Featuring full-color artwork as well as archive and close-up photographs, this is the absorbing story of the rifles arming Imperial Japan's forces, from the trenches of Mudken in 1905 to the beaches of Okinawa 40 years later. Entering service in 1897, the Arisaka family of bolt-action rifles armed Japanese troops and others through two world wars and many other conflicts, including the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-05. Issued in long and short versions - the latter for cavalry and specialists - the Type 30 was the first main Arisaka model, arming Imperial Japan's forces during the Russo-Japanese War, though after the war it was refined into the Type 38, which would still be in use in 1945. The main Arisaka rifle of World War II though was the Type 99. Lighter and more rugged than the US M1903 Springfield rifle it would face in the initial battles in the Pacific, it was produced in four main variants, including a sniping model and a take-down parachutist's rifle.

The Arisaka Rifle

This is the absorbing story of the development, combat use and legacy of the influential sidearms used by the armed forces of the Soviet Union. Featuring archive and present-day photography and specially commissioned artwork, this is the story of the pistols that armed the forces of the Soviet Union and its allies during and after World War II. In 1930 the TT, a single-action semi-automatic pistol developed by Fedor Vasilyevich Tokarev and firing 7.62ï¿½mm ammunition, began to supplement the venerable Nagant M1895 revolver in Soviet military service. From 1933 the TT-33, a simplified version, was also issued; all three would equip Soviet and proxy forces throughout and after World War II, seeing action across the globe. In 1951 the 9ï¿½mm Makarov round, or PM, entered Soviet service, quickly joined by the Stechkin machine pistol. Other specialized versions of the Makarov were developed, including the PB suppressed version and the 5.45ï¿½mm PSM, a more compact version. Initially developed in 1990, the improved PMM version of the Makarov was intended primarily to increase the stopping power of the 9ï¿½mm round by chambering a higher-pressure load. In this study, noted weaponry expert Leroy Thompson tells the story of the Tokarev, Makarov, Stechkin and other handguns in service with Soviet and other forces around the world, exploring the development, combat use and legacy of these formidable firearms.

The Drilling is a triple barreled, shoulder held firearm. The gun's name is derived from the German word for three "drei". As a "combination gun," the Drilling is comprised of various combinations of shotgun and/or rifle barrels, giving the flexibility of shooting both types of cartridges with a very wide range of caliber from one firearm. Designed for the discerning hunter or survivalist, these guns were originally designed for the German and Austria forests where there was an advantage to carrying one gun with multiple loads when hunting the dense forests filled with various types of game, from deer, to wild boar and fowl. The option of quickly choosing a specific caliber enabled the hunter to be ready for whatever came out of the woods. Primarily made by small manufacturers, Drillings were offered in a broad range of barrel configurations, combinations, and calibers. Many of these firearms were custom made and are highly decorated through detailed engraving, stock carving and customized metal work. This book is an essential reference to this type of gun and looks at both older as well as contemporary Drillings and gives instructions on their use.
